REJECTED! KILLS SELF

Naw it's coo-. I was kind of hoping I would get rejected since I've had second thoughts about someone owning 5% of my idea since I applied a few months back.

Hope the lucky winners blow apart the interwebz 2.5 with some crazy new productive ideas.

cbrinker··on 89 Ways to Kick Start Your Hacking
Is it just me or do a lot of these points contradict themselves right after being said?

-Being driven and lazy at the same time.

-Extreme optimism

-Extreme pessimism

-Being good at math

-Having good communications skills

cbrinker··on Dow Closes Up 10.9%, Nasdaq up 9.5%
Looks like my Wednesday prediction was spot-on. We'll see just how low we can go tomorrow.
cbrinker··on Dow Closes Up 10.9%, Nasdaq up 9.5%
This isn't a bottom and a reversal, this is a bear rally. Tomorrow the fed will be dropping interest rates 0.5% and we may see a slight rise or stagnation. Thursday the government will be releasing some quarterly reports, which will probably show just how bad things are getting and the market will eat crap again (-4/500).

Prepare to hit the 7000's in the coming weeks as no one buys squat for xmas. Sorry little Timmy, due to fiscal irresponsibility there's no Christmas this year.

cbrinker··on First look at Windows 7
Everyone copies everyone else, if no one copied anyone else we would have 1 operating system, 1 car to drive, and 1 type of dessert cake to eat.

Anyway, I'm interested to see where Microsoft takes this product. I hope Ozzie (SP?) is helping move Microsoft in a new, better direction. Science knows since after the 2003 suites they've been making worse crap than usual.

cbrinker··on Ask YC: Do I need to have breadth on accounting and laws?
I think you should ask the question, "Hey, should I know where my money is and will I get sued?"

If those two points are relatively important to you, I would imagine spending a little time understanding them.

1. You should at least know the basics, how accounts work and how to balance the books. Quarterly and fiscal reports are good to know so you can tell where your business is at. Wikipedia.

2. You will probably need to know about contract and IP law most in the tech business world these days. Wikipedia.

3. Yes, I use quickbooks. It's so easy to use that it has somewhat dumbed down my understanding of accounting that I formally studied last year. Learn accounting first.

Law is a huge deal. Maybe start off at Jurisprudence? :] I have formally and vocationally studied many topics of law (I hope I don't switch from IT/Coder to lawyer >.<) and it's a relatively abstract and complex subject. Basically, learn the basics about contract and IP law, then just work in good faith. The courts like people and businesses that work in good faith.

cbrinker··on Ask HN: How do you bill your clients? (for your app)
You can integrate your system with Quickbooks. They have an API. I don't know if you want to deal with their software, though.
cbrinker··on Web-app version of Markov-Chain domain generator (be gentle on the server)
I just registered 1300 domains beginning with "ass."
cbrinker··on Be careful of who you work for
Or just work for yourself? I guess that kind of requires the whole knowing what's best for you mentality as well, though.

cbrinker··on Dropping Adsense - Saying Goodbye to $100K Per Year in Easy Income
I'm not the one going around claiming to have done certain things that are rather ridiculous to believe without seeing a legit degree and a student record. Forgive my skepticism.

There are a lot of snake-oil salesmen out there that are going to sucker you in with their smooth words. Hey, if he writes about things and it helps you, that's great. Still doesn't convince me he graduated with 2 degrees in 3 semesters. It does convince me he knows how to make some money, though.

Even if you had nothing better to do in your life at that time, taking on 30-40 units is beyond a full time job. You'd litterally be looking at something like 60-80 hours of work a week. That's unreasonable by any standard. It's just like some other articles posted on here saying, working super long hours and little sleep isn't something that is productive or something worth bragging about.

Also, after reading through some of his articles he doesn't sound like a very logical person. I won't argue with results, but some things said on their don't exactly vibe with reason imo.

cbrinker··on Dropping Adsense - Saying Goodbye to $100K Per Year in Easy Income
Never heard of the guy before. I checked out his bio on Wikipedia and it says this:

"After being arrested for grand theft in Sacramento, CA and given 60 hours of community service, Steve claims that this was the impetus he needed to turn his life around. He claims to have earned two college degrees in three semesters from California State University, Northridge - he says that he partly achieved this by attending a college that was generous in awarding advanced placement credits for courses he had taken in high school, thus reducing his required course."

The citation links to his article where he claims he did 30-40 units per semester and no summer school. I don't know, that sounds pretty ridiculous to me. Very hard for me to believe he earned 2 degrees in 3 semester on technical subjets of mathematics and comp sci.

cbrinker··on Reduce Your Business Costs With Free Stuff
They did include google apps. Look at "He’s no longer the Richest Man in the World" again.

Some businesses like keeping their data internal. There's nothing wrong with running your own SMTP server. Personally, I'm not exactly thrilled with Google's choice to make email into "conversations." Plus, how much control do you have over your data if it's in Google's hands?

Ever heard of Hula?

cbrinker··on Reduce Your Business Costs With Free Stuff
Wow! That article was fantastic! My best bud worked for Asterisk for a while, so I knew how to get cheap VoIP. Just order that switching line from the telco.

I didn't even know there was an OSS alternative to VMware/MS Server! Again, great stuff!

I bookmarked this page and I'm forwarding it to my partners as I write this.

cbrinker··on Apple responds to "I'm a PC"
Apple won't catch on with business because why the hell would you pay for Apple when you could just get *nix? It's their own grave, but hey, if they're happy making consumer crap, be my guest.
cbrinker··on Apple responds to "I'm a PC"
Perhaps it's because Apple offers nothing worth switching for over a Microsoft solution that is generally cheaper and more supported by not only oem manufacturers and colleagues, but software and hardware manufacturers?
cbrinker··on Apple responds to "I'm a PC"
"Mac ads have had pc's reputation on the ropes in the collective unconscious."

Do you mean Microsoft? If so, it sure as hell hasn't scratched the business world. It's only knicked the consumer world a couple percentage points. I'd reconsider your position.

Further, this is kind of old and becoming a nonissue in today's world. With the migration towards non-platform-specific consumer usage of systems (ie. internet) I don't see as heavy of a need for some bloated consumer operating system.

I'm no huge Windows fan. I've used countless operating systems; C64, Cisco IOS, HP-UX, AS/400, Solaris, Mac OS, Windows 3.x-Vista, Server NT-Server 2k8, Linux derivatives galore, BSD. While developing/working on them and I can say I'm not really impressed with what Apple offers.

Apple is just a gimmick in the world of computing systems. You can claim that consumers aren't nerds that love command lines, but what do you think drives the media infrastructure that panders to all the fun-filled music and video that Apple users love to waste time on? It sure as hell isn't Mac OS.

Computers primarily run the world's business. Steve Jobs' goal is not to get Apple tangled up with "boring" business stuff. Hell, look at the stupid hipster getup the "Mac Guy" wears in the comercials. Jobs put the noose around Apple's neck when he set the goal of being consumer-orientated instead of business-orientated if his plan is digital world domination.

cbrinker··on The world *has* changed: Why we should be afraid
If you want to point fingers you only have to look at the federal reserve (1913).

Fractional reserve banking - Hey, let's give out invisible money ten fold (more today) than actually exists! Usury? Yeah, let's add more invisible money to it in the form of interest. We are geniuses!

cbrinker··on WiFi is no longer a viable secure connection
Since when were we under the impression it ever was?

I sure as hell know that I don't trust wireless; wired is bad enough. Tack on an open-ended medium to invite all of the fun guys onboard.

cbrinker··on MySQL vs PostgreSQL
Well, I pose to you this question:

Would you rather have 1 type of car that the government makes that works pretty reliably and is a middle-ground car, or would you rather have a selection of cars to chose from; sports, truck, sedan, minivan, etc. ?

Everyone has different needs. I use MySQL extensively for it's memory-based storage engine, MyISAM for quick & dirty non-escential data i/o, and InnoDB for when data needs to be managed securely for processes.

I would use PG for transaction-based data processing in a high-volume situation with multi-processing clusters. Otherwise MySQL works fantastic for all my needs.

cbrinker··on Yahoo Closes At $13.76. What A Train Wreck.
Wow? Seen Bear Stearns lately?
cbrinker··on Angel investor: Want my money? Here's my checklist
Not sure if that's exactly for the YC crowd. While everyone would love to have a multi-million dollar business, the reality is that there are a lot of smaller good ideas that don't need $1mil+ funding.

I think YC takes a better approach in the way of financing. However, I think YC forces a group to be extremely frugal and thoughtful in their fiscal decissions. I think receiving large funding may lead to improper investments to younger entrepreneurs; but that's just my $0.02.

cbrinker··on Bank Robber Recruits Accomplices With Fake Job Ad on Craigslist
Bank robbery done right.
cbrinker··on Bankruptcy, not bailout, is the right answer
Yes this is the root problem with the credit markets; bad mortgages.

However, this doesn't account for the root financial problem of our country that has plagued us since 1913; the federal reserve. These crooks sway the entire economy and have exponentially inflated our currency. The dollar is worthless today. It is worth $0.02 to the dollar of the beginning of the 20th century.

We went off the gold standard, we decided fractional reserve banking was a good thing, and we put in charge idiots and crooks to create a lesse faire market that only benefits them.

Don't believe me?

Usury, fraction reserve banking, and crooks.

cbrinker··on I test drove a Tesla
Oh, I highly enjoy driving, I just don't enjoy having another pedal to mash and fiddling around with a stick while in traffic. I live in Los Angeles. You ride the 405 freeway during rush hour in a manual.

Regardless, I still wouldn't buy a manual. I drive my brother's old turbo Z and my dad's manual pickup sometimes. I've driven a friend's manual Porsche Cayman S on the tracks too. Clutches just aren't fun.

An added bonus is the speed of SMG transmissions today. My 335i's "steptronic" transmission has a clutch-lock for that real direct connection to the engine feel, plus it shifts in 100ms; which I don't think any human could actually do. The perfect throttle blipping makes it extremely smooth. Further, the fun of using paddle shifters is a huge thrill as a FIA F1 fan! :D

cbrinker··on $700bn Bailout is shot down by House of Rep Vote (205-228), US stock market plummets
This bill cannot pass. We will only make the problem that much worse in the end. We will be proping up this failed system to continue on. The legislation is so vague and flimsy it's virtually worthless.

The patching of the credit liquidity crisis right now is like using corks to patch a leaky submarine. Not only that, but you don't have enough corks to patch all the holes.

We are going to see a large recession in all of our markets. Even if you pass this bill, no serious economist knows the extent of the financial crisis. All of them can gaurentee, though, that it will be far above $1tril.

Don't fall for this nonsense the politicians and the rich are spouting about. They only want to sustain this failed lesse faire market and continue to benefit from it. We need our economy to be entirely restructured and this is the time to do that.

cbrinker··on Google backs gay marriage
So you support "seperate but equal?" That was the winning attitude of our nation for about a century; and that turned out just dandy!

Why should polygamy or polyandry be outlawed? If multiple people feel they love each other enough that they wish to be bound by the legal act of marriage, who are you to say otherwise? Who does it hurt?

This concept of marriage and single sex partners is not only anti-evolutionary, but is only backed by religious nonsense. Granted some animals wish to be this way, but why should anyone say others cannot?
