cbrinker··on Google backs gay marriage
Why should anyone, or a collective entity, sit idly by while things are being said and done that they do not believe in?

Everyone is so indifferent to everyone else in this day in age. Why shouldn't Google (at least their executive board) be able to say that they feel strongly that gay marriage is a right that should be had?

Your style of thinking is a dangerous subconcious attitude that has crept across our nation since the latter half of the 20th century. Stand up for what you believe, because if you don't you may lose out on more than just your rights.

cbrinker··on I test drove a Tesla
I love my 335i coupe, but I think I would trade it for a Tesla in a heartbeat. I am so excited that a company is embracing alternative fuels (electricity especially) in aims of making a supercar.

Gear shifting slows down a vehicle, regardless of how fast it is, since you're disconnecting the engine from the powertrain. It also is another thing you have to bother with while driving.

cbrinker··on Help us spread our site to your school
It just doesn't seem like something that will catch on. It offers a single particular service that is probably only useful to some people a minimal number of times before it gets old and/or their question(s) is answered.

Maybe it's just me personally, but I don't see a use for it really.

cbrinker··on .NET vs PHP in the Enterprise (comics strip)
Both sides are guilty of frivilous misconceptions about the other's language of choice. I avidly use PHP, but I have had to work on projects in .NET before as well.

Personally I prefer PHP. I could probably state reasons why and a .NET fanboy would come through and say .NET does all of those too.

And the world keeps spinnin'.

cbrinker··on YC is a cult
The cylinder only fits in the circular hole.

You can't assume that you always have a cylinder or a cube to fit into the mold. Heck, you may end up with an icosidigon and have only a triangle to try to shove it into.

As amazing as the Y Combinator idea may sound to some, you also have to have a healthy sense of skepticism and apply it appropriately to every situation and oppourtunity that comes your way. Make it work for you, not you for it.

cbrinker··on HTML/CSS as a Prelude to Programming
This is a fantastic little write-up. So many kids these days miss out on the benefits of understanding what is actually going on under the hood of that flash DX/OGL GUI. There are bits and bytes, logic and complxity. I don't know what I would do without the technology of computing systems; maybe try to invent them?
cbrinker··on Great quotes from Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Linus Torvalds
Linus Torvalds is my god now.
cbrinker··on Basic MySQL Performance Tuning Practices that Everyone Should Know About
Both MySQL and PostgreSQL are absolutely fantastic pieces of software. Both have their pros and cons, but in general, they are neck in neck.

There was a nice quote that I forget where I read it, but it goes as such:

"Choose MySQL if you want an open source product, PostgreSQL if you want an open source project."

cbrinker··on Basic MySQL Performance Tuning Practices that Everyone Should Know About
Oh how many businesses spend countless thousands on incompitent contractors when all they needed was someone to simply run EXPLAIN.
cbrinker··on Startup Ideas We'd Like to Fund
At the root of many issues I think is interface design. I'm not just talking about software, I'm talking about hardware. Computers really haven't changed how we interact with them for a good, what, 30 years? Is the mouse and keyboard really the best ways to interact with a computing system? Why don't we have integrated HUDs in our glasses, all of our new cars (granted some like BMW have them optionally on expensive models), or even on clothes and/or accessories we wear?

It would seem to me first that maybe we should rethink human-computer interaction in the first place.
