cblconfederate··on The complicated futility of WordPress
that s the size of the smallest mobile app
cblconfederate··on The complicated futility of WordPress
They don't. not only are the users not having ownership of their content and distribution, there is also censorship
cblconfederate··on The complicated futility of WordPress
When you build something a lot of people use, it will require a lot of ducttape. Software represents the diversity of its users.
cblconfederate··on The complicated futility of WordPress
They should never do that. People who want walled gardens should go with a rented solution from one of those website builder companies
cblconfederate··on The complicated futility of WordPress
It's just great to see work on self-hosted cms, and PHP nevertheless, the easiest one to host. Open source has forgotten the art of making the web open to everyone, not just to BigTech employees.

I don't have a mental model for "64 pounds". Apparently, it s the weight of a 9 year old, which would ve been a better unit of measure.
cblconfederate··on Ask HN: What does the GDPR penalty for loading fonts mean for website owners?
> X-but-GDPR-compliant

That market does not exist, it will never make money (maybe from leeching the public sector but everyone makes some scraps there). In fact the idea that laws will create a market was a bad idea.

cblconfederate··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
It would be nice if we had the option to ask for $1 to our visitors, but we don't because the credit card and payments racket works its magic. Just what are websites supposed to do to survive? Shutting down is not a valid answer

Of course the #1 culprits are the advertisers themselves, because they don't care about their craft, they are lazy and just push all their money to google. But the web should be like an arcade machine where people can pay to get content, and current regulation makes that impossible

cblconfederate··on Ask HN: Where do you hang out virtually online?
It's hard to participate. It's good for finding interesting ideas and people, but participating is a job on its own , since everything seems to attract the wrong people. Too public, too much anxiety
cblconfederate··on Ask HN: Where do you hang out virtually online?
I don't think the small ones are much better. It's all about signaling and politics everywhere.

cblconfederate··on When the algorithm is your boss
The solution is to move the burden of accountability from low-level management (which is replaced by machines) to the people in charge. CEOs should not be immune from jail
cblconfederate··on When the algorithm is your boss
They may be bad in Amazon, but algorithms are the future of governance everywhere. It will be the end of political divisions.
cblconfederate··on State of the Web: Static Site Generators
> Not everyone who writes knows how to program too.

Aren't static generators much harder to grok for nonprogrammers than wordpress?

This is a non-problem. The problem is not wordpress. The problem is that modern browser programming, and modern javascript in particular are way more complicated than they need to be for lay people to build their own websites as they did in the good old days. That's why everyone moves their communities in discord instead of building a self-hosted forum. We need to be talking about how to make the browser an accessible platform for everyone again (including moms and pops, remember Frontpage?). NOT to keep over-complicating even the smallest tasks and build frameworks that only benefit the BigCorps

cblconfederate··on U.S. companies are hiring Latin America’s tech talent
close? it s the internet dude
cblconfederate··on U.S. companies are hiring Latin America’s tech talent
Unless these people start building companies in said countries this does not benefit the countries. They re essentially tourists
cblconfederate··on U.S. companies are hiring Latin America’s tech talent
In the long term though this is not good for the home countries, they are left behind and at best become tourist destinations. There is no country that pulled itself forward this way, not even with remote work. Eastern europe is an example with very low growth rates since the fall of communism.
cblconfederate··on U.S. companies are hiring Latin America’s tech talent
But why do all these companies have to be in america? One often hears about companies hiring remotely, but hardly ever establishing remotely.
cblconfederate··on In defence of the boring web
The problem is not the website that uses wordpress instead of some 'artisanal' static site generator. The former is something that mom and pop can self-host, the latter is something the aspiring programmer enjoys doing. The problem is that modern browser programming, and modern javascript in particular are way more complicated than they need to be for people to build their own websites. That's why everyone moves their communities in discord instead of building a self-hosted chat. The browsers are powerful today, but the APIs can be really complex. I have webrtc in mind in particular, dealing with that is something that easily can demoralize someone who is not a professional programmer. Even in the old days of Flash, you could host a Red5 server on a VPS and have a video conferencing app going, nowadays most people go with SaaS solutions because it's too damn hard. We need to be talking about how to make the browser an accessible platform wher everyone can build (including moms and pops, remember Frontpage?). NOT to keep over-complicating even the smallest tasks in order to please the BigCorps (looking at you, CSS complexity). Instead of another framework let's bring in more <tags> (Hello, <marquee>)

Just use system fonts. Except on android, it's only roboto

And do use verdana, it's the most readable font. Admit it, you like it here

cblconfederate··on Turning back time with epigenetic clocks
The reason for pursuing clocks is to use them to assess the efficacy of longevity interventions. Currently, with an error bar ~3 years they are not bad at all, and can be used to assess aging relative to a starting point, as you suggest.
