cblconfederate··on Ask HN: Catastrophe happens, What would happen to all of the world's knowledge?
surprisingly little of value exists only in digital form. I can t think of a theorem that is not printer somewhere
cblconfederate··on Tell HN: We have a responsibility to speak out against blockchain technologies
Like how they spoke up about surveillance, misinformation, manipulation, tracking, walled gardens, monopolies, dark patterns, demonetization, censorship, encryption? Technologists don't rely on voice and speaking up, code is louder
cblconfederate··on Why Quantum Mechanics?
He should consider the neuroscientific answer: The brain is a limited capacity model maker in a world that is only partially sensed. It was evolved to predict food and survival along the time dimension, not much more. Its model making is limited to extrapolating linearly (infinities) or nonlinearly (quanta) from initial conditions, and there is no guarantee it can make a full consistent theoretic universe. Even its notion of information is limited. It ponders many questions, mostly out of inertia, but not all questions are going to lead to useful answers, even the question 'why quanta'
cblconfederate··on Why Quantum Mechanics?
you mean 4, or 11, or 26
cblconfederate··on Not Another Framework
> The worst part is feeling like all the deep knowledge I have with my current tools is now obsolete, and I'm a beginner all over again

The worst part is that there are millions of github projects that are abandoned, obsolete, uncompilable, unworkable, broken etc. Meanwhile you can still find every kind of widget in jqueryscript.net and it works! Seriously, screw more frameworks, javascript programming is fundamentally broken and no amount of frameworking or godawful constructs will fix that basic fact. After dabbling a bit with 'modern' javascript i m convinced there's a mass epidemic of masochism in the community.

And in the meanwhile browser development is progressing at snail-pace. It's 2022 and we still have to deal with unfinished implementations of ubercomplex things like webrtc.

cblconfederate··on Nature Neuroscience offers open access publishing for $11k per article
Is that without social contribution?

Minimum wage in greece is 730 usd. Many if not most phds earn less than $1000, if they are lucky to have stable funding. Hence brain drain

cblconfederate··on The old internet shows signs of quietly coming back
That's a very charitable assessment. The problem is the oversaturation of everything with politics (politics is the lowest-common-denominator subject that everyone can argue about). The loud politics minorities are so numerous now that they can easily sway the attention of even niche communities. You can see that most glaringly on reddit where pretty much all important conversations are destroyed by becoming the same old politics debates, like how /r/technology is politics or r/coronavirus is politics . Lots of people stay in HN exactly because it moderates against politics but HN exists because YC doesn't mind running an unprofitable site.

Most forums shut down because they are unsustainable, and the reason they are unsustainable is that the current mobile/social media vortex is hoovering all the attention. This leads to a negative spiral where people don't make good self-hosted forum software / community software anymore and so on.

cblconfederate··on Ask HN: Do you consider Hacker News to be a positive/useful use of your time?
It is facebook for tech bros, with occasional nuggets that are really good. There 's a certain level of self-worship by the people who occasion here , but i don't think its that special. It's basically what reddit would be if its audience was 10-20 years older.

I 'waste' a lot of time here because i have a lot of empty time these days. I would like to have more diverse communities on the internet, i 'd take 10 forums instead of the duopoly reddit/hn taking all my attention. There is value in participating in separate the bubbles vs participating in watered down groupthinks.

cblconfederate··on Elsevier embeds a hash in the PDF metadata that is unique for each download
But sci-hub does not embed anything. Checkmate elsevier

I m considering that elbakyan has enough credibility to start her own series of open source journals

cblconfederate··on Nature Neuroscience offers open access publishing for $11k per article
To be clear: they pay their own editors, the ones who do the coordination, not the authors (who actually edit the paper) or the reviewers.

11000 is the annual pay of a Phd student in southern europe, it's incredibly high amount. the $5000 that elsevier asks is already enough. prestigious EU grants run for > $1m. National grants may be $100000.

As an EU citizen i hate the fact that even more EU money is siphoned to enrich the NPG. We ve had enough and this must stop. I hope both them and elsevier get outright banned, because clearly open access is another revenue stream for them

cblconfederate··on The old internet shows signs of quietly coming back
it would be nice if it were true but it s probably wishful thinking

The only "nice" trend that is happening is that PC and laptop sales are slightly up. That and higher reliable network speeds might facilitate bringing back 'the old internet'. But as long as the web is still made for smartphones it will remain bland and boring.

cblconfederate··on 25% of U.S. adults are not active enough to protect their health
It's really not about liking or not , most things are just habits. It's isn't necessarily a healthy state to like inactivity either. Humans aren't built to live in small square rooms , it's an acquired taste that most people have because they grew up in cities.
cblconfederate··on Ask HN: Why does everyone wants to be an entrepreneur?
For some people having a manager is hard and gets harder every year, and it s a major motivator for pursuing becoming their own boss. It s not a bad reason
cblconfederate··on Saving on egress switching from AWS to Hetzner
nice, but the article is the opposite of "too long"
cblconfederate··on Ask HN: Does anybody allow websites to “Send Notifications”?
I assume people always say no, that's why i implement my own "notification" system in the webpage. If the user wants to hear the audible beeps, they just leave the tab open. if not it's fine with me

There are so many dodgy sites with notification popup tricks (and that company that makes that fake dialog that asks you if you want notifications every time, so that they can keep bugging you unlike the real notification dialog which bugs you only once). At this point i think people associate notification prompts with malware sites so it s not a good look

cblconfederate··on Meta Unveils New AI Supercomputer
biology is hard, perhaps too complex for human brains to make a decent model of it. AI can solve it and try to explain it to us (if it pleases her)
cblconfederate··on On Covid
It really doesn't seem we have other 'pressing matters' , unless those matters are manufactured somehow. Can the world return to its habits of consuming recklessly, traveling like there's no tomorrow, office routine every day, low tech schooling and ignore the fact that it's largely unprepared for a new pandemic? Maybe, but it would seem more like reckless yoloers than future-thinking people.
cblconfederate··on U.S. weighs sending 5k troops to Eastern Europe to counter Russia
I think it's important to remember Biden's support for the Iraq war

> “I do not believe this is a rush to war,” Biden said a few days before the vote. “I believe it is a march to peace and security. I believe that failure to overwhelmingly support this resolution is likely to enhance the prospects that war will occur …”

I wonder if this is a reckless decision. Maybe he takes the easy way out too easily. It certainly seems like too many drums have been drumming a little too loud for proportion.

cblconfederate··on Ask HN: Staying fit whilst working from home?
you can cycle to your old yoga studio i guess? What's stopping you from going outside, they asked you to work from home, not stay at home all the time
cblconfederate··on Ask HN: What technology is “cutting edge” in 2022?
Cell reprogramming
cblconfederate··on Show HN: Bulk convert images online without sending to server
This is the real decentralized web. Current web sucks because your data touches servers you re supposed to "trust". Trust nothing
cblconfederate··on WordPress themes, plugins backdoored in supply chain attack

cblconfederate··on Binance kept weak money-laundering checks even as it promised tougher compliance

cblconfederate··on Binance kept weak money-laundering checks even as it promised tougher compliance
Looking at the list of "transgressions", none of them crosses the line of being illegal. They are concerns about lax standards and a request from the police (which as i understand they fulfilled). Banks in europe do worse stuff than this
cblconfederate··on Hetzner announcement: Price changes for servers ordered via the Server Auction
Expected i guess

I don't know how it is in the US, electricity prices have skyrocketed in europe
