cbarnes99··on We Replaced MMAP with Io_uring in Our Rust Query Engine. It Got Slower
Rust is just the language they happened to be working in. If you read through the LLM generated garbage it becomes clear that io_uring isnt the problem, their code was just slop / bad.
cbarnes99··on Sam Altman's statement on the Navier-Stokes dispute
He also decided that it was appropriate to say "The team threatened us with unfounded accusations of plagarism." Which has to be the absolute height of irony on both the counts of plagiarism and threats given that OpenAI has effectively admitted to likely plagiarism with their deliberate non-answers, and explicitly admitted to threatening them.
cbarnes99··on Stop Making TUIs
Curses, the TUI library, has been around since 1978. It was superseded by ncurses in 1993, which saw it's latest update in December of 2025. Both of them still work and can be used today, with the caveat that the official original curses has been deprecated since 95, but NetBSD maintains an updated version iirc.
cbarnes99··on Who owns the code?
You clearly didn't actually look at the link and are just responding to the title. There's Supreme Court precedent. It doesn't get any clearer than that.
cbarnes99··on Buy Your Friends Batteries
I think the point is that breaking it up makes the cost more palatable. It's also easier to convince people to spend a bit of money for people they care about than a bunch for themselves that they don't strictly need. People also often struggle to think of gift ideas for birthdays.
cbarnes99··on Rust-lang/rust is adopting an LLM policy
You clearly didn't read the actual policy if you think they're banning llms.
cbarnes99··on Rust-lang/rust is adopting an LLM policy
They explicitly say that "create" is not the hard or valuable part. I suggest you actually read their policy instead of just the headline and then reacting to comments.
cbarnes99··on Darktable
Darktable should already basically do all of this with their existing copy and import function. The only thing it won't do is erase the SD card for you, and generally I would recommend you just format it on the camera.
cbarnes99··on Hyprland 0.55 announced the switch to Lua for its config files
This is kinda really old news at this point. 0.56 just came out.
cbarnes99··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
Why the fuck does extreme heat require turning off the AC?
cbarnes99··on 30-year sentence for transporting zines is a five-alarm fire for free speech
It's worth noting that the average sentence for murder in the US is 15 years. And it is not actually a "designated terrorist organization". The government is claiming they are a "domestic terrorist organization" which isnt a thing under US law, additionally, there is no organization to speak of.
cbarnes99··on The End of Code Review: Coding Agents Supersede Human Inspection
This feels like some combination of monumentally stupid and incredibly naive.
cbarnes99··on We Need VAT and UBI
They pay the most taxes, but they also pay the lowest percentage of taxes compared to the money and assets that they have.
cbarnes99··on We Need VAT and UBI
It certainly shouldn't be. But society has a responsibility to take care of everyone to a basic minimum standard. Everyone deserves somewhere safe to sleep at night, to be able to bathe and clean themselves, to be healthy, and to have enough to eat and drink. If you can guarantee these things for anyone who can't afford it themselves, then you don't need to do literally anything else.
cbarnes99··on We Need VAT and UBI
VAT is intrinsically regressive because poor people spend all of their money, and wealthy people spend almost none of theirs. Sales tax is no different. UBI is also an incredible waste. Don't give money to people who don't need it. The person with the 10 million dollar home doesn't need to receive UBI, and they're spending practically none of their money to contribute back into the system with VAT.
cbarnes99··on Bricks and Minifigs Parts Ways with Franchise Owners
They keep saying unauthorized consignment agreement. Except that they've yet to make public so much as a single document showing that the franchisees were not allowed to do consignment. And the previous owners shared their franchisee agreement which explicitly authorized them to do consignment.
cbarnes99··on Rsync 3.4.3 has hundreds of Claude commits
If you're willing to build from source it's not particularly difficult with git bisect
cbarnes99··on The AI water issue is fake
This assumes that they do actually build in colder wetter climates. Most of the time they dont.
cbarnes99··on What's Wrong with AI?
A large portion of data centers use open loop cooling. That is to say evaporative cooling. So they take fresh drinking water, make it hot, and dump it in the air. It's a lot cheaper than closed loop cooling.
cbarnes99··on Maybe you shouldn't install new software for a bit
It really pisses me off that responsible disclosure timelines are being ignored.
cbarnes99··on For Linux kernel vulnerabilities, there is no heads-up to distributions
You clearly have no idea how often windows has unpatched privesc exploits.
cbarnes99··on "People who don't use AI will be left behind"
You clearly missed that the statement in quotes. And didn't actually read the linked post.
cbarnes99··on Your Terminal Is Burning Battery Like It's Mining Bitcoin
Some people frequently or exclusively work on remote systems over ssh. Multiple windows is not an alternative to a multiplexer. They have some overlap in use cases. But it's not 1-1.
cbarnes99··on Quirks of Human Anatomy
The urethra is routed through the prostate specifically because it needs to occlude it during sex. The prostate swells during an erection to obstruct the urethra and significantly reduce the likelihood of a bacterial infection in the bladder. It's a very important function.
cbarnes99··on Got kicked out of uni and had the cops called for a social media website I made
No investor with any brains who reads this post would ever give you money. And no job that reads it would ever hire you.
cbarnes99··on Steam Hardware: Launch timing and other FAQs
You're thinking about foviated rendering. They're just doing foviated streaming. So it renders at full resolution, and only streams the parts that you're looking at with full resolution on the stream.
cbarnes99··on AI misses nearly one-third of breast cancers, study finds
They did all have cancer
