caycep··on Banks and Credit Unions to Team Up Against Apple Pay Fees
granted i am a bit of schadenfreude at the thought of poor poor megabanks having to pay....fees...
caycep··on My weird new hobby: Wandering around Tokyo on Google Maps
I wonder how we can get cities to build on a human scale. that is my dream for LA; that would involve massive zoning changes here and breaking up quite a bit of concrete...
caycep··on My Humble Opinion on 'Omarchy' OS
It is relevant as the whole point of Omarchy is political - it's DHH's way of trying to un-democratize the open source dev community
caycep··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Granted, I feel like munging gigabytes of text data (i.e. G, A, T and Cs) would be something LLMs would be good at
caycep··on How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?
With consumer/desktop Ryzen the one thing that gave me pause was the number of motherboard/CPU failures, esp w/ Asrock. Has that gotten sorted out yet?

still on 5800x (non-x3d)

caycep··on The Price of Intelligence Is Falling Rapidly
I mean, this is more or less true of Marginal Revolution for over a decade now...

caycep··on US 10-Year Breaches 5% as Inflation, Supply Worries Mount
that was supposed to be a joke...
caycep··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
I'm just saying...between my sandy bridge to the current box, when I looked either having to search for older components vs. just building something new, it was always just easier to build something new. Of course this was when prices were "normal" vs. today....
caycep··on Vibe Coding is the new Internet Dating?
I half wonder if we wouldn't have this giant compute supply crunch/environmental damage/energy crisis and tech oligopoly situation if someone would've just written better English to Code translation for LLVM instead...
caycep··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
Granted, I feel this is true re my non-Mac computers. You think you can max it out at first, but then there's new interfaces, RAM standards, etc
caycep··on US 10-Year Breaches 5% as Inflation, Supply Worries Mount
ah true, bipartisan stimulus then!

Debt per GDP/size of US economy is more useful. Debt/GDP has the 2008 jump as the Obama Admin tried to (but not nearly enough) stimulate out of the housing crisis. Debt/GDP looks flat until 2020.

2008 and 2020 jumps make sense in the setting the 2008 crisis and COVID which was effectively a recession assuming you believe in Keynesian economics.

Paying for US debt if you are the US is cheap when interest rates low. Trump/Bessent/Elon have been doing everything they can to drive up inflation, so now interest rates are necessarily going higher...

what, they're not going to name it Delamain?
caycep··on Kenyans Did College Students' Homework for Years. Then A.I. Arrived
I kinda wonder if there was some secondary educational benefit for the workers doing this
caycep··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
I think this is true, and also a lot of tech, which often isn't as PR as the web/internet tech, gets funded by DOD/DARPA

That being said, I feel like a lot of the web-based tech, device tech etc came out of the liberal/leftist university environments, i.e. BSD unix, CERN, linux ish type projects. Berkeley/Stanford/MIT etc. So the culture of a lot of people who were rank and file and enthusiastic about this stuff from had this mindset.

caycep··on Apple is no longer thinking different
More importantly, they made better versions with us consumers in mind, vs. their peers that made versions with the CIO of big Fortune 500 companies in mind...
caycep··on Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI

caycep··on Alzheimer's trial to test drug on people without symptoms to test prevention

caycep··on AMD Based FreeBSD Desktop Reloaded
I have the one a level up, the phantom gaming one. Those have been solid, maybe better components? Although they do have the inherited issues from using the Intel I225v NIC...
caycep··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
if there's repeated statements and gestures to that effect on national TV and other mass publications, it's beyond "echo chamber" status...
caycep··on Alzheimer's trial to test drug on people without symptoms to test prevention
My irritation is that it's not till 7th paragraph until they tell us what the drug is.

It's almost like that's not the important thing.

Kinda like how political hit jobs just mentions "emails were hacked"; whether the emails had nuclear codes or the target's dry cleaning receipts is not important...

caycep··on Sanders introduces bill to ban artificial superintelligence and pause AI
granted, my ghost will be darkly amused at ChatHK47. Death to meatbag scum!
caycep··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
Another reason to question the judgement of Meredith Kopit Levien / the younger Sulzberger...
caycep··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
They definitely were sponsoring ML conferences before 2017, but symbolically, having Jensen/the CEO actually show up at a dedicated session and demonstrate detailed technical knowledge of the conference proceedings in my mind was a turning point. Albeit I remember his words to the crowd of grad students and post docs at the time: "Only Nvidia would announce their flagship card...to an audience who is completely broke!!"
caycep··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
to their credit, there was a lot of work behind "luck". Jensen showed up in person in 2017 in NEURIPS and he and likely a lot of his top brass basically sat down and read the entire conference proceedings/abstracts; there was likely a lot of work behind the scenes to behind the ML research pivot.

How sure are we that OpenAI wasn't deliberately scraping Hugging Face and this isn't just an elaborate way to avoid criminal fines etc?
caycep··on Taylor Farms: How One Company's Reach Became a National Risk
it depends, there are certain farmers markets here in LA that have strict minimum criteria in terms of food handling, organic label compliance and food safety before they give a vendor a spot. Also, you can definitely tell just by looking at the quality of the produce of these places vs. the average Vons/Pavilions supermarket
