caublestone··on What did British officers think of the American civil war as it was happening?
Russia and the US became very friendly during WW2 as well. Stalin and Roosevelt had a solid relationship while Stalin and Churchill did not. Churchill did not like Stalin for various reasons. But Roosevelt was the glue. Unfortunately, US elections at the time stipulated that the Vice President was chosen by the Democrat electorate and there was a coup to replace Roosevelts first pick (a guy friendly to the ussr) with a nobody from Missouri named Truman. Stalin never respected Truman and US relationships with the USSR deteriorated quickly after FDRS passing. Churchill and England became the dominant western voice in post ww2 trade and the iron curtain was eventually dropped.

Truman had so many financial struggles that the pension for presidents was created for him to live a dignified life after leaving office.

Don’t forget Russia sending ships to America in support of the union. The letters between tsar Alex and Lincoln are some of the loveliest pieces of writing and highest praises for America.

caublestone··on RFC: Let's Disrupt Dating Apps
I kind of think that agreeableness is a major factor in seeking intimacy that isn’t captured well enough in online dating. People are afraid to meet people that disagree with them and actively ridicule people with differing values/opinions/lifestyle. Religions, sports teams and other mass clubs obfuscated a lot of the concern away. But without those people need other groups and tools to trust a stranger to agree with them over time.
caublestone··on Pentagon Requests $15B for Space Force
For the first time in my life, I’m excited for a new government initiative. I’ve realized that the there is a link between home security and military budgets. I’m optimistic about the space force because we the people are bought in to spending on insurance premiums which is a defined margin above calculable risks. And so if we want government funded space exploration we can sell it as insurance and actually make it happen.

caublestone··on Medieval Price List
How much is community college where you are? How much is state?
caublestone··on Medieval Price List
Beer .5 ducat a pint. College starting at 640 ducats a year up to 2560 ducats a year. So formal education started at 1280 times and went up to 6400 times the price of a pint. Which at $6/pint today would be ~$7500 to $36k a year.

caublestone··on Apple TV, Apple TV, Apple TV, and Apple TV+
What’s pretty brilliant is that you could remove the word Apple and it would look exactly like what Tv is. Essentially Apple has replaced TV with AppleTV. And with that Apple is trying to become a monopoly on what was formally a relatively distributed system.

caublestone··on $1.2T in risky corporate debt showing similar warning signs to subprime crisis
When markets crash they tend to crash fast after seeming to be in a slow motion. I wonder what the kickoff will be?

If it’s this week it will go something like this:

1. People realize that they aren’t getting their tax returns because of the shutdown and it has an outsized effect because consumer savings rates are low. Market wobbles.

2. Treasury issues short term debt at high yields and long term debt at low yield yields Thursday, market crumbles Friday.

3. Fed meets next week to discuss the debt window and if they need to slow down QT or go back to QE. They don’t know. Market goes volatile.

4. Government shutdown ends at first sending stocks up. Then key economic data releases showing consumer spending is going to be weak because real wages were down.

Anyways, it’s more likely we’d have to see a couple of blue chips go bankrupt first like a big state utility company or a classic old American tech company.

caublestone··on Voltaire's Luck (2016)
It was so dramatic that France refused to use the word Banque to describe financial institutions until Napoleon re-established a central bank almost 100 years later.
caublestone··on 'Climate grief': The growing emotional toll of climate change
In decline and fall of the Roman Empire, Gibbons focuses a lot on the people’s climate fears. The people believed that there was nothing that could be done and that they deserved nature’s wrath.

In the 1600s, Lisbon was leveled by an earthquake. Some thought that God was punishing them others saw it as an opportunity to rebuild and grow stronger. Today, Lisbon is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

I pray for people to end the fear and believe in a bigger future. Happy new year.

caublestone··on Changes to U.S. federal authorities relating to production and marketing of hemp
“Additionally, it’s unlawful under the FD&C Act to introduce food containing added CBD or THC into interstate commerce, or to market CBD or THC products as, or in, dietary supplements, regardless of whether the substances are hemp-derived. This is because both CBD and THC are active ingredients in FDA-approved drugs and were the subject of substantial clinical investigations before they were marketed as foods or dietary supplements. Under the FD&C Act, it’s illegal to introduce drug ingredients like these into the food supply, or to market them as dietary supplements. This is a requirement that we apply across the board to food products that contain substances that are active ingredients in any drug.”
caublestone··on Farm bankruptcies on the rise according to new Fed report
The value of brand is rising which increases the prices paid by consumers for commodities. This makes people buy less of the underlying commodity and more of the overarching brand.

Think about coffee. It’s a commodity. But more people are spending $4-5 on a single cup instead of $4-$5 on a pound of grounds. Spending power does not match price change.

A good historical case study is Standard Oil. In an effort to stabilize prices and reduce peaks, Standard oil established last mile delivery for refined oil. People bought Standard Oil at the grocery store. Standard didn’t start buying oil wells until 20 years into the company after they had pressured prices down to the bottom.

caublestone··on Make your own sourdough
A couple left academia to pursue their passion for cultures and turned their treasures into a market:

Apparently they run into some sticky situations carrying dried yellowish brown powder around in aluminum foil. In Saudi Arabia they were detained at the airport for hours while authorities verified that the sketchy powder was in fact mostly harmless yeast.

caublestone··on How the Elderly Lose Their Rights
The definition of rights evolves with access to information and standard of education. What was once the right to own land became the right to vote became the right to fair wages. For most of history the exclusion of rights was inherited at birth by race, gender and class. But as we live longer and understand sickness better we recognize temporal states of being that challenge our standards of freedom. A person who becomes sick does not have equal access to care nor do they have free choice in treatments having to relinquish control to doctors, insurers and regulators. Perhaps it is time to define the rights of the sick and move society towards equality.
caublestone··on Gut Germs Appear to Play Role in Multiple Sclerosis
Bacteriophages lost out to antibiotics in the 1950s. Designing bacteriophages for specific microbes is fairly straight forward so you could design a probiotic loaded with good bacteria to be delivered with a bacteriophage against bad bacteria to quickly adjust the microbiome ecology towards a desired state. The nice thing is that bacteriophages are dietary supplements so you don't need drug approval (unless cure claims are made).
