catmanjan··on If Not SPAs, What?
Last time I looked it couldn't run in the browser, and there was no ETA, has that changed?
catmanjan··on When will web browsers be complete?
The fact that we're comparing a type of software to a school of science speaks volumes
catmanjan··on The Fall of Silicon Valley
No, he's saying that Silicon Valley was originally about extreme innovation and cool tech, not multi-trillion dollar companies
catmanjan··on Apache Helix – Near-Realtime Rsync Replicated File System
So basically there is no good solution at the moment, and a good solution would probably involve enhancing the underlying filesystem - this was the same conclusion I came to
catmanjan··on Apache Helix – Near-Realtime Rsync Replicated File System
How else could they do it? All systems I've seen that have relied on files on a file system use the file name as the "primary key"

I believe you can use journalling to detect file name change events but I don't think it scales well

catmanjan··on Recycling was a lie to sell more plastic, recycling industry veteran says
The problem is the plastic that doesn't make it landfill and is instead in the ocean/rest of the environment
catmanjan··on Tables: Tracking work for teams
Wait until people have to upgrade "low-code" apps in 10 years time... will be the same problem.
catmanjan··on Google Services Experiencing Disruptions
Isn't search more or less static? Docs and mail change instantly and users expect instant feedback
catmanjan··on Tables: Tracking work for teams
>COTS you do not want to modify/adapt to your busines

This is redefining a term after the fact to suit marketing needs of the new term - with the except of bespoke solutions, it has always been possible to adapt COTS products - have you not seen SAP? Dynamics? Even Excel is COTS

catmanjan··on Tables: Tracking work for teams
You're thinking of things in terms of how they function rather than the value they provide - from a business value perspective COTS and low-code are identical, its just that low-code used to be GUI desktop apps, now they're GUI web apps.
catmanjan··on Tables: Tracking work for teams
>I think we are crawling towards a future of low/no-code

Friendly reminder that low/no-code is just newspeak for "COTS"

catmanjan··on Former NSA chief Keith Alexander has joined Amazon’s board of directors
>Your data will stay in Germany unless you specifically decide to move it elsewhere.

Prove it

catmanjan··on Libvirt – The Unsung Hero of Cloud Computing (2013)
Yep, if people think XML has aged poorly, wait until these schema-less formats age...
catmanjan··on India authorises sale of electric vehicles without batteries
Aftermarket/second hand batteries maybe
catmanjan··on An Update About Changes to Facebook’s Services in Australia
No, but I feel it could, I don't think any corporation ever could
catmanjan··on An Update About Changes to Facebook’s Services in Australia
Using your analogy, I would say Australia currently has Facebook, Google and News Corp cancer

Better to treat one now than none...

catmanjan··on An Update About Changes to Facebook’s Services in Australia
Were it not for the parens, your first paragraph could have been talking about any of the players

Why is it a false assumption? The users are the product, and the user want news

catmanjan··on An Update About Changes to Facebook’s Services in Australia
Fair enough, I simply don't trust any corporation to act in my interest - if there was a trusted third party lobbying for FB/Google's position I may have another look

Of course I would like to see the government go further and upset News Corp as well, but upsetting these two seems like a good first step

catmanjan··on An Update About Changes to Facebook’s Services in Australia
As an Australian I have no doubt the policy is misguided, but the fact that these American companies are being so loud about it makes me wonder if the government is actually on the right track.

In general I would say whatever corporations want is not in my best interest, so whatever they don't want, might be.

catmanjan··on Banks create money, but it's less impressive than it sounds
Which is more likely, asteroid mining or governments printing money
catmanjan··on Ask HN: What non-obvious tech/market may take off in the next few years?
No code = someone else's code, it's been around forever, used to be called cots
catmanjan··on Netflix Conductor: Open-source workflow orchestration engine
There is, it's called Apache nifi

It's ripe for someone to make it saas

catmanjan··on Google: Open Letter to Australians
That is utterly false

The Australian government isn't forcing Google to index content, and I suspect what op suggested is what will happen and News corp will beg for reindexing

catmanjan··on The frustration of trying to invest in my hometown
What if the banks have properly recognised the value?
catmanjan··on What is a Product Roadmap?
Agreed, this seems to be one of those cases where a word was invented that can be confusing when read literally.

I'd say a product roadmap is more like a product recipe - you already have (or can get) the ingredients, so the roadmap is like the cooking method with charts

catmanjan··on ACCC alleges Google misled consumers about expanded use of personal data
This isn't true in Australia, you are meant to pay tax on barter, even individuals - I could even see the tax office pursuing it for big ticket items like heavy machinery
catmanjan··on U.S. eyes building nuclear power plants on the moon, Mars
Replace mars with America, and fusion reactors with frigates and you'll realise how silly this sounds
catmanjan··on On how Flash games shaped the video game industry
I'd argue that none of those can do both the art and programming side of things as well (for beginners) as flash did

I haven't used RPG Maker in a decade, but when I did you had to import sprites, same with GameMaker. JS doesn't help you with art. Unreal Engine has a basic modeller but you have to use Blender which is quite complex for beginners

Flash was like an animated paint, super accessible

catmanjan··on Flash Game History
I don't think any of the new development platforms have gotten even close to how accessible it was to make games in flash - pre as3 was the perfect combination of ease of art creation and programming
catmanjan··on Cool URIs Don't Change (1998)
I've encountered this disconnect between web documents and file systems a few times - in Windows at least, moving or renaming a file also changes the URI (unless you check the journal, how can you know that C:\test.txt that was just moved to D:\test.txt was the same document?), so its hard to argue why doing it over HTTP should be any different...
