catmanjan··on Banks scramble to fix old systems as IT 'cowboys' ride into sunset
From the article "Experienced COBOL programmers can earn more than $100 an hour"

In Australia that's a lot, but my understanding is that it's common for American developers to be on way more than this...

catmanjan··on Great Barrier Reef at 'terminal stage'
I agree, but replace hearts with wallets ;)
catmanjan··on Great Barrier Reef at 'terminal stage'
I don't think the average Australian cares, at least not enough for it to influence the way they act/vote.

Of course if you ask anyone on the street if they are in favor of protecting the reef they'd say yes, but when they see the price tag they would probably lose interest.

catmanjan··on Hackathon hustlers who make a living from corporate coding contests
Nah, but a developer who can sell is usually a better proposition than who cannot.
catmanjan··on How we exploited a code execution vulnerability in math.js
Probably related to the second exploit which used apply.
catmanjan··on LastPass release fix for DOM manipulation vulnerability
That's how those bug finders fees work, I'm not sure if introducing money into something ever makes it more ethical though
catmanjan··on Australia hasn't had a recession for over 25 years
Yep, international money in the housing market is forgivable, but there is no way they should have allowed such massive investments in the new coal mines.
catmanjan··on Australia hasn't had a recession for over 25 years
It is a bubble as it only continues for as long as the government allows - eventually the house owning majority will die, the next generation will be jaded and demand stricter controls. I guess that's what the locals have over the rich internationals, a vote.
catmanjan··on Dishwasher has directory traversal bug
I can see how load/fault data would be valuable to the manufacturer, but to a consumer...?
catmanjan··on Ask HN: A question for those who went to MIT/Stanford/CMU
Not sure about those particular schools, but my experience of CS is that it is completely separate from the going ons of the commercial market.

I believe most schools stick with traditional tools for educating, using Haskell and C for projects, although some are moving towards python.

I'd be surprised if any of them teach any javascript whatsoever unless you took a course specifically on that topic.

catmanjan··on Fear of litigation may be key to security on the Internet of Things
Too many bucks to pass, the court cases would never end.
catmanjan··on An Explainer on Unix’s Most Notorious Code Comment
I guess that would count as virtual antiquing?
catmanjan··on Stealing passwords from McDonald's users
If you're displaying user input you could just encode to their matching HTML entities...

{ or the human friendlier one &rcurb (?)

catmanjan··on Chrome 56 Beta: “Not Secure” Warning, Web Bluetooth, and CSS Position: Sticky
It's not a trivial problem, I'd be more worried about users uploading illegal content maliciously. Would definitely require a moderation team depending on the site size...
catmanjan··on Chrome 56 Beta: “Not Secure” Warning, Web Bluetooth, and CSS Position: Sticky
>Chrome will mark HTTP pages that collect passwords or credit cards as non-secure

Will probably get hated on, but you should shell out for your own domain if you're collecting this info - there are quite a few BYO domain, free hosts.

catmanjan··on $15 Production Kubernetes Cluster on DigitalOcean
I don't think many are using it now, but with the out-of-the-box Docker web app projects coming in VS2017 I bet that number will go up. It's a much better proposition than WebDeploy.
catmanjan··on Windows 10 Store Refunds ‘Call of Duty’ Player Because Nobody's Playing It
Probably, a big factor could be the anticheat stuff - without the steam client inspecting game state, Microsoft store players could get away with aim bots or other exploits
catmanjan··on How 2K Killed Irrational Games
You have direct access to a much smaller market, there are only just over 20 million people here.
catmanjan··on Ask HN: Why are SIM cards still a thing?
It was probably just a CDMA phone - they don't have SIM cards are were actually quite common a while ago.
catmanjan··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test
> Hash tables are not O(1) lookup

In terms of algorithmic time complexity, it is O(1)

catmanjan··on Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Express
Useful for developers targeting organisations on Microsoft stacks
catmanjan··on Mark Zuckerberg accused of abusing power after row over 'napalm girl' photo
At first I agreed, but then, can you think of a better (more important?) medium?
catmanjan··on Hewlett-Packard Enterprise sells its software business
Yeah wow I was an order of magnitude off... I can't wrap my head around how this is good business but I'm sure someone knows what they're doing.
catmanjan··on Hewlett-Packard Enterprise sells its software business
We're trying to integrate with some of the Autonomy stuff at the moment, talking to HP you realize they know about as much as we do about the products - I assume they got the products, but forgot to hire the developers who created them?

Wasn't it over $1 billion for Autonomy?

catmanjan··on The Metaprogrammer
A good craftsman never has to, because he has the right tools ;)
catmanjan··on The Metaprogrammer
Exactly, all these things are tools of the trade - tradesmen spend money on the right tools for the job because that (and experience) is what separates them from the DIY-ers
catmanjan··on Duet Display – Ex-Apple Engineers Turn Your iPad into an Extra Display
I used to do this using http://symless.com/synergy/

Cool that it's now built in to windows!

catmanjan··on ShiftJS – Swift to JavaScript transpiler
Yep saying transpiler is just being more specific, like saying car instead of automobile - although it is probably superfluous when including the names of both input and output languages.
catmanjan··on The limited value of a computer science education
You said "Getting a job is simply not what a CS degree is for" and then said "Just know that it's not only for a job"
catmanjan··on Docker 1.12: Now with Built-In Orchestration
I think Vagrant would be a good replacement for you, it's basically docker but built exactly for reproducible dev environments
