castratikron··on Tesla Gets Crushed in Germany by EVs from Volkswagen, Renault, and Hyundai Group
Yup, as soon as the "real" auto companies start selling EVs Tesla will be doomed. Any day now, surely...
castratikron··on I want to have an AWS region where everything breaks with high frequency
Sometimes during development instead of checking the return code I'll check rand() % 3 or something similar. I'll run through the code several times in a loop and run through a lot of the failure modes very quickly this way.
castratikron··on Time-reversal of an unknown quantum state
Quantum debugger?
castratikron··on Programming with RISC-V Vector Instructions
Very cool, thanks.
castratikron··on Programming with RISC-V Vector Instructions
Is there a big penalty for context switching to another process that uses a different vector length?
castratikron··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
Already happening in USA

castratikron··on Mail delays hit Philadelphia residents, short staffed USPS struggles to keep up
If it's any consolation the spam you're talking about is considered "third class" mail and is delivered in lower priority than most other mail.

castratikron··on Is your chip card secure? Much depends on where you bank
Guessing Visa can "fix" this problem in the same way they fix the fallback to magstripe: make the vendor pay a fee for noncompliance.

castratikron··on Apple does not keep the 30% commission on a refund
Yup. This will make it to n-gate alright.
castratikron··on Donald Trump suggests delay to 2020 US presidential election
Not sure why you're being downvoted, it's an interesting thought experiment.

Here's a video talking about what might happen. Basically, if there were no election, all that would be left is 2/3 of the Senate:

castratikron··on U.S. Economy Contracted at Record Rate Last Quarter
Let's say they reported 9.5% . Would it still not be the biggest drop in history? Isn't that the important bit here?
castratikron··on Donald Trump suggests delay to 2020 US presidential election
Even if the election were delayed or cancelled, he was still elected to a 4 year term. The term doesn't extend indefinitely just because there wasn't an election. Directly from the Constitution, "The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January". It's actually very specific about when the term ends.
castratikron··on AI in physics: are we facing a scientific revolution?
Cool example, thanks!
castratikron··on Tech sector job interviews assess anxiety, not software skills: study
Haha. I worked at a place that did not start out as a software company but now had a software team (they built industrial machinery). The director of the electrical and software department was completely clueless of course. He insisted that since we are an engineering company, an engineering degree was required to work here. And that meant any candidate for a software engineering position was automatically rejected if they only had a computer science degree since it didn't have the word "engineering" in the title.
castratikron··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
"This is a test of the emergency broadcast system..."
castratikron··on YouTube deleted an electronics repair channel [video]
Sometimes I miss the days when the internet wasn't one great big monolith and you had to discover things organically through word of mouth. But those days are gone.
castratikron··on YouTube deleted an electronics repair channel [video]
Maybe I am being naive but could this not be accomplished with simply a self hosted website with links to torrent files of the videos? Nobody can take down your personal website (relative to what youtube can do now), and distribution by torrent solves the bandwidth and storage problem.

Of course, not as convenient as streaming, and you lose the comment section (is that truly a bad thing, though?), but it is a viable solution that can be implemented right now. People are talking about "alternative" websites as if they will find some magic bullet on that path. But who will create that website? Who will maintain it? And if the answer to those two questions isn't "me", how can you guarantee that the same problem won't eventually happen?

castratikron··on Palantir Announces Confidential Submission of Draft S-1
It's what they call crystal balls in Lord of the Rings
castratikron··on The neoliberal era is ending. What comes next?
As long as nothing bad happened to you, right?

The mortality is around 1%. So in the US alone that would leave over 3 million dead. Due to this 50 state lukewarm solution I think we'll ultimately see 1 million dead. The economy is made up of people, by the way.

castratikron··on The neoliberal era is ending. What comes next?
Would it have been scarier to have let this virus rip through the population?
castratikron··on San Francisco apartment rent prices are dropping fast
Interesting point about the AirBnBs. Do you know if anyone has looked into this effect closely?

Seems like for all of the horrible damage being done by this disease, both physically and mentally, there are some silver linings, too.

castratikron··on How the 2021 Ford F-150's onboard generator works
Would imagine the hybrid inverter is going to be more fuel efficient since it only needs to run to charge the battery.

And to your second point, they'll just have to buy two Ford trucks!

castratikron··on How the 2021 Ford F-150's onboard generator works
Not quite what you're talking about but it's US federal law to keep electronic log books for long haul trucking. Can't be on paper anymore. Not that you'd need a law to do what you're asking. Could be as simple as a text file on a USB mass storage device built into the car. Type whatever notes you want into it.
castratikron··on Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS pre-installed
I would recommend strongly to buy Dell laptops. The quality of the laptops is very good. I bought a XPS 13 four years ago for around $1000 and everything still works great. The laptop has come along during international travel.
castratikron··on Update on IT Security Incident at UCSF
What would it mean if it was?
castratikron··on What I learned from writing for The Onion for a month (2015)
IMO a great example of this freedom is the Stephen Colbert character roasting Bush in person at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Dinner. This was when 9/11, Iraq war, Guantanamo Bay, Katrina, etc. were on peoples' minds at the time.

castratikron··on Teaching physics to neural networks removes 'chaos blindness'
So can you teach a NN an equation of motion, and if so would it execute faster than numerically integrating said equation? Could have impacts in physics simulations although the accuracy might not be as good
castratikron··on Amazon Announces $2B Fund to Invest in Climate Tech Companies
As long as the market dominator decides that climate change is a problem it needs to solve
castratikron··on Reverse Engineering the Comtech AHA363 PCIe Gzip Accelerator Board

castratikron··on Quantum Matter Orbits Earth
So is a permanent magnet also quantum matter? Classical physics says the net magnetization of a solid is zero.
