cassieramen··on Annoyed at crypto, Brazilian judge orders mobile carriers to block WhatsApp
Can you explain why that is true? If a superior judges keep striking the order down, doesn't a precedent get set that prevents a lower court judge from issuing a similar ruling again?
cassieramen··on [dead]
Buzzfeed seems to have more information. Some social media of what's going on. Careful, some graphic images.

cassieramen··on Santa Monica convicts its first Airbnb host under tough home-sharing laws
I stand corrected, thanks for the info! That's an interesting supply/price analysis. Airbnb really is moving the needle.
cassieramen··on Santa Monica convicts its first Airbnb host under tough home-sharing laws
Is 1,700 units at all meaningful for Santa Monica housing prices? Is it worth the city expending all these resources to stop what seems like a blip on the radar?
cassieramen··on Apple Fires Back at Spotify for Asking for 'Preferential Treatment'
Oh wow, that's harsh. I can't believe you aren't allowed to direct people to the web experience. That must seriously erode margins for hardware folks.
cassieramen··on Apple Fires Back at Spotify for Asking for 'Preferential Treatment'
How exactly does Apple's payment system work for companies that are cross platform? If I have a Dropcam subscription and am using the ios app, is Dropcam paying Apple 15% of my subscription cost? That seems nuts.
cassieramen··on The Fining of Black America
They give some data to back up that statement.

> Although African Americans and Whites report smoking marijuana at the same rates, African Americans are 3.7 times more likely get arrested for marijuana possession.

> An analysis of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that 6.6% of White people between the ages of 12 and 25 have sold drugs compared to 5.0% of Blacks. Yet Black people are 3.6 times more likely get arrested for selling drugs.

cassieramen··on The Fining of Black America
Great analysis! I'd be interested to see an analysis of the demographics of the police departments in cities with a high percentage of revenue coming from fines. It might also be interesting to look at the historical demographics of that city. I wonder if a city "in transition" (either becoming more or less diverse) is more fine happy as the dominant population loses or gains power.
cassieramen··on Snapchat raised $1.8B in a Series F round
This is part of what I'm asking. The valuation is growing, as is the amount of money their taking. That means the company now has to exit for that much more in order for employees to see any return. If I'm an early employee I now have to hope they exit for $X billion for my shares to be worth anything. If they exit for less there's a chance I see nothing after investing years of my life and watching them pass on a $3 billion offer.

I hope that's not the case.

cassieramen··on Snapchat raised $1.8B in a Series F round
How are snapchat employees making out here? It seems like share dilution and even more investors getting exit preference has got to be eroding value like crazy.

Perhaps someone with some experience can shed some light here, if you joined snapchat 2 or 3 years ago are you seeing all of your supposed value evaporating away?

cassieramen··on Snowden calls for whistleblower shield after claims by new Pentagon source
Are there any people not in favor of pardoning Snowden here? It seems like most of the people I encounter who aren't on his side either don't fully understand the situation or think the story is so ridiculous some conspiracy is going on.

Everyone is so gung-ho on getting rid of political insiders, exposing the wrong doings of the government, and yet we blacklist someone who could be a bannerman for that cause.

cassieramen··on Magic mushrooms found to lift severe depression in clinical trial
This seems to be the important quote on the findings: “We can give psilocybin to depressed patients, they can tolerate it, and it is safe. This gives us an initial impression of the effectiveness of the treatment.”

All the legal hurdles they had to pass to make this happen are quite impressive. Hopefully they've eeked open that door a bit for further study.

cassieramen··on How Much Is a Good Teacher Worth? (2011)
Thanks! Updated :)
cassieramen··on How Much Is a Good Teacher Worth? (2011)
tl;dr The way to close the achievement gap between the US and stellar foreign nations (here compared to Finland) is by increasing the number of average and above teachers. Classroom size, homework, or any other measure is only weakly related to performance. Nothing beats a stellar teacher.

Proposed fixes are a probationary period for new teachers and removing the fixed pay scale that dominates the teaching profession.

cassieramen··on 'Hamilton' Scalpers Pocket $240k Every Week
I disagree with that. There are many reasons artists want to keep prices low. In this case maybe you don't want to reserve your ticket a full year in advance. An artist might also want their work to be accessible to more people than those that can afford a $1000 ticket. Raising the price is too simplistic an option.
cassieramen··on 'Hamilton' Scalpers Pocket $240k Every Week
What are effective methods for stopping ticket scalpers? Heavily penalizing resale is kind of a crappy route but for a show like Hamilton I wonder what the legitimate person resale case is. Has any artist fended off the scalpers successfully?
cassieramen··on Equal Pay Is Not Just a Women’s Issue, It’s a Family and Economic Issue Too
Another article by the wsj saying the opposite. http://www.wsj.com/articles/gender-pay-gap-widens-1445389259
cassieramen··on Equal Pay Is Not Just a Women’s Issue, It’s a Family and Economic Issue Too
I know there have been a couple of companies that are making the move to openly discuss employee pay. It's something that surely needs to happen. Twice in my short career I've run into very obvious pay discrimination revealed after an employee on the way out told me their salary. Once to me, once to a fellow female developer. Excited to see both voluntary moves toward this as well as legislation.
cassieramen··on Code happy: Find out what a company is really like
Is there a way to see how many people have replied? It'd be nice to know if "are you happy going to work most days" was general consensus.
cassieramen··on In foam-arrow patent fracas, Newegg swoops in to aid LARPer defendant
Why don't other distributors contribute? His gofundme says this could set a precedent for them to be sued. Seems worth their time and money to be sure this goes away now.

cassieramen··on What housing “filtering” can and can’t do
As long as the absolute number of units in that 75% is large enough, it can still successfully kick start this filtering process.

Fascinating to see actual studies supporting what the free market is already pushing for, more luxury housing.

cassieramen··on Japan's population declines for first time since 1920s
This feels like the beginning of global population flat lining in the coming years. We eventually want the population of the world to level out and decline for environmental reasons. Are there ways to combat the adverse economic effects of a declining population besides trying to raise the birth rate?
cassieramen··on English and Its Undeserved Good Luck
While the loss of languages is certainly hard to stomach, the biggest detriment to society is that is often signifies the loss of information. One common language used globally dramatically decreases the chances of information getting lost. It also has the benefit of increasing access to information over time. A great breakthrough can be shared globally, not insulated in one region.

I question the need to preserve a language if it inhibits the positive spread of information. Why should a country hold on to their traditional language if it holds back the potential of its citizens?

cassieramen··on How to Decimate a City
This reminds me of another Atlantic article, In Defense of Gentrification. Essentially, Syracuse has segregated itself by income level. Areas with a high density of poverty continue to suffer. The gentrification of neighborhoods generally elevates the quality of life of for its lower income residents. Those that are displaced are more likely to move to a neighborhood with a higher median income than their own.

cassieramen··on Show HN: Six Degrees of Venmo – Visualizing your payment network
I am very confused as to what the value proposition for venmo's social feature is. It's super creepy that by default someone can know all this information about me.

This just leads to creepy podcast fodder: https://gimletmedia.com/episode/4-follow-the-money/

cassieramen··on Are “Better” Ideas More Likely to Succeed? An Analysis of Startup Evaluation [pdf]
How can that and "we find that ideas that elicit more positive evaluations are significantly more likely to ultimately reach commercialization" coexist?

They are also working off 652 ventures coming out of MIT. Seems like a small and biased data set.

cassieramen··on Berlin becomes first German city to make rent cap a reality
Rent control has been tried in so many different American cities and by and large is considered a failure in any city it is implemented. I would love to see a city try a radically different tactic. Minneapolis requires a certain amount of low and middle income housing in any suburb. NYC is giving large tax credits for middle class housing and is considering a pied-à-terre tax. Simply expanding rent control seems to just be pushing the problem off farther into the future.
