carsonm··on Making of Aprilzero
Yes, package this up for me in a SaaS, teach me the lifestyle, and then please take my money.
carsonm··on Screwed by Square
Shopify might be worth considering, they have a pretty good POS system (http://shopify.com/pos), and probably more experience dealing with these sorts of shenanigans, plus you can get them on the phone.

And you don't have to sign up for the whole POS system to get the card-reader for your phone/iPad. Their mobile app (available to any Shopify shop owner) ships out a free reader. http://www.shopify.com/blog/11013977-introducing-shopify-mob...

carsonm··on Path Closes $25 Million Funding, Led by Indonesia’s Bakrie Global Group
I guess I'm part of the small minority who love Path. It's my favorite app, I use it almost every day. I use it strictly with my immediate family - my brothers, sister, their spouses and my parents. I barely have time for Twitter, I don't use Facebook, but I use Path. Their pitch about deeper connections and about being real and authentic rings true to how we use it. I'm quite disappointed to watch them flounder.
carsonm··on Introducing Shopify Mobile
Looks like the primary new thing here is the ability to create orders on the phone, including the option to accept a credit card swipe. (Which is awesome.) Most everything else was part of previous versions of the mobile app.
carsonm··on Doing Better: Making Improvements to HealthCare.gov
I wonder if any of the members of this "surge" have read the Mythical Man Month.
carsonm··on Shopify Acquires Jet Cooper
I wonder if this means Shopify will start doing per-customer custom theme development themselves.
carsonm··on My Dad The Engineer
As a Dad myself, probably about the age of your Dad, with a son about your age, I can tell you that as impressive as what he has accomplished in his career is -- I bet he'd say that having a son like you, and what you wrote, the way you feel, and your determination to follow his lead is his greatest accomplishment.
carsonm··on Starting and Sustaining
Garrett has earned a solid reputation with me in how he has run Sifter. I've been a customer on-and-off, and he's always treated me fairly and promptly, even when I was "churn." I agree the price feels a little stiff, but I see his argument about the value. If confidence in the money-back guarantee is all you need to pull the trigger, I wouldn't hesitate.

Note: I don't know Garrett, we're not friends, just wanted to add another voice.

carsonm··on Seamless Transitioning from Google Reader to feedly
Pardon the skepticism, but:

a) No clear revenue model

b) Built on the (thus far, still supported) Google App engine

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...

carsonm··on A List of Sublime Text 2 Hotkeys
That's an even better one, nice work.
carsonm··on An Advanced Guide to HTML and CSS
I've heavily used CSS and HTML for many years and I still learned a thing or two in here. Great work Shay.
carsonm··on Show HN: JavaScript-less iOS Folder Animation
Very nice demonstration of something I wouldn't have assumed possible with just CSS.
carsonm··on How I made $10k in one day with Facebook Ads
It may not be the author's intention to imply this, and I'm glad he had a good experience, but it's worth mentioning that this is a single experience, and not necessarily evidence that some Facebook ad campaigns aren't being hit with false clicks.
carsonm··on Gmvault: gmail backup. Liberate your emails
On Vista64: made it through all install screens. No desktop shortcut (even though I asked for one), had to nav to install dir to find it. Ran uninstall and it only did a partial uninstall (I've still got a gunky folder in program files).
carsonm··on Steve Blank hands a new owner's manual to startup founders
I'll third that, with a request for an audio book version too.
carsonm··on Why Daylight Saving Time Should Be Abolished
I definitely prefer the light later in the evenings (DST), I'd just like it to stay that way year-round. (i.e. let's stop the madness, but it would be a pity if we stuck with Standard Time year-round, we should stick with DST year-round).
carsonm··on Stripe: instant payment processing for developers
Wow. Excited. After watching PintPay toy with my emotions, I'm glad someone did it up right. I hope they've got a viable model. The market is positively starving for something like this.
carsonm··on Senate passes Patent Reform Bill
IANAL, but to me it sounds like patent trolls can now patent stuff other people invent, then sue the inventor.

"The measure would switch the United States from the "first-to-invent" system to the "first-inventor-to-file" system for patent applications."

carsonm··on Jonathan's Card revealed as viral marketing campaign
Yes, he stated that far before this story "broke."
carsonm··on Jonathan's Card revealed as viral marketing campaign
Nah. I don't know Jonathan, but I've followed him on Twitter for quite a while after reading his O'Reilly published book on iPhone web app dev. (I think he's also the guy who took over maintenance of jQTouch.) Anyway, watching the whole thing evolve on his Twitter stream, it sure seems sincere. "Suspected to be a viral marketing campaign" might be a more appropriate headline here.

Conspiracy theories are fun to think about, but too many things don't add up for this one. Thin evidence of it, a potentially anti-Starbucks agenda by coffeestrategies, the fact that Jonathan is a real live person with tons of professional credibility, and the fact that in order for it to be true, Jonathan would have had to pro-actively lie to all those of us who follow and trust him.

That's strikes me as exceedingly unlikely.

carsonm··on Chargify New Pricing
One of the problems you have is that your reason for pricing doesn't jive with how you're doing it. If it's really a question of support costs, just charge for support at the lower tier(s).

Plus let's be honest, once someone is up and humming, support costs for them (provided your service is as solid as you sell it to be) shrink very drastically.

I'm all for you making money, we want you to survive as much as you do. But given the locked-in nature of what you're selling (i.e. you've got us by the short hairs), and the extremely high cost to integrate with you, waking up one morning to a massive change like this is deeply, deeply unsettling.
