carlosbaraza··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
Not sure if the website is broken, but attempting to book 2 people and clicking a time does nothing on iOS Safari. It might be worth looking at the analytics for device distribution but I presume iOS is the bulk of your traffic, si probably worth optimising it.
carlosbaraza··on Ask HN: I will become a father tomorrow, what advice could you share with me?
I'm a first time father to a 6 month old now. My biggest lesson is humility. Don't ever criticise some other parent's practices. This is hardcore survival mode, so do whatever works to keep the baby alive and your mental sanity.

Sleep deprivation was a big issue for us, and we solved it cosleeping with him in the same bed (criticised by other parents and older generations ), but it works for us cause we don't have to standup and fully wake up to soothe him and feed him. First few months we used a cosleeping bed and now just sleep together (he is in the middle between us).

Another tio is to try different stuff multiple times and different ages. Some useful things were white noise, pacifier, singing, dancing.

Good luck, and welcome to the brotherhood. I'll smile at you with a deep understanding face whenever I cross you in the daily walks with your newborn.

carlosbaraza··on EU electricity production by country and source
This is great. Incredible to see how many countries still greatly depend on coal as a key source of energy, including the US. Macro trends that take hundreds of years to fade out.
carlosbaraza··on More than 60k rent-stabilized apartments are now vacant
Interesting point taking population growth into account. If everyone owned a good house and had no reason to change house –probably would never happen, although there are forces like remote working and VR pushing to remove the need to concentrate around city centres–, genuine demand for housing would halt, leaving only speculation. If new technologies enabled us to built more and cheaper houses –and governments didn't oppose it–, offer might increase. And maybe housing would come back to being what should have always been, a commodity.

Apparently M2 Pro will launch in November, not October https://www.tomsguide.com/news/new-macbook-pros-with-m2-pro-...
carlosbaraza··on Ardour 7.0
That makes sense, cause it's true that the audio world -compared to design- is really plugin heavy. However, VSTs are mostly used by real pro users and the distribution the browser offers is not to be dismissed easily. Amateurs could get away with a few good plugins. When they are ready to make the transition, a native app or extension could be installed. But it would open an interesting door to quick editing something online, and even collaboration if integrated.
carlosbaraza··on Ardour 7.0
Thank you Paul, the story of Ardour is really inspiring. Have you looked into potentially porting it to WASM and running in the browser? Is there a Figma for audio already?
carlosbaraza··on Crazy self-spreading vaccine idea
Is that completely certain?

In the case of COVID-19, you can infect people before developing COVID-19 symptoms. Anecdotally, I believe that I contracted COVID-19 and infected some friends before I was even aware of the infection building up inside my body. You would only get symptoms when the body starts responding to the infection.

Now the question is: Can a virus exist that allows infection by close contact (e.g. talking to someone) but doesn't have severe symptoms? That is certainly the way I experienced COVID-19, but it is not a universal truth for the disease.

carlosbaraza··on Crazy self-spreading vaccine idea
Interesting points and resource. I guess we are far from getting there, but I'm not sure the current vaccination programs are the solution to pandemics.
carlosbaraza··on Crazy self-spreading vaccine idea
Sounds like you are talking about SARS-CoV-2? Just kidding, I know the virus probably wasn't engineered.
carlosbaraza··on Crazy self-spreading vaccine idea
Interesting points. I guess the fact that it couldn't be stopped is really the deal breaker, unless there was a kill switch in the design of the virus (maybe some kind of antidote you could take?).

Regarding mutability, I am not an expert at all. However, some viruses mutate more than others, so I imagine there could be some way to control the mutability and maybe even prevent it from happening with self repair mechanisms?

Do you know what is this idea usually named? I tried searching for it, but I couldn't find much.

In any case, it feels like it is a field humans should research (and probably already are), because the risk for biological weapons is quite high; and currently our western society is not even prepared to unite and get a vaccine, so I'm not sure how we would react to a riskier pandemic.

carlosbaraza··on Tiny CSS variables library (alternative to TailwindCSS)
For the past few months, I have been using a simple library I created. I am now confident it could be valuable to other devs.

Key ideas:

- Don't relearn CSS

- Strong defaults to choose from. Colours, margins, font sizes, etc.

- Carefully chosen design system (some borrowed from TailwindCSS to maximise compatibility)

carlosbaraza··on Should I Buy the Dip?
Good point. I guess that a key assumption of most strategies is that the world's economy will continue to grow. The condition is to wait long enough to see it through without panic selling.
carlosbaraza··on Ask HN: Should I quit my job?
I'm Spanish, 28 years old and an Electronic Engineer. I happen to be in a very similar situation, wondering if I should just go for the side project.

I understand you very well because in Spain, most people value a lot the stability of a permanent position. And permanent roles are quite rare these days in Spain.

Whenever I face these kind of decisions, I found that fear to the unknown is what hurts me the most. Therefore I try to make a risk assessment, that usually clears my mind.

Firstly, I think that if your side project is already making some money, it is likely that if you put the hours, it will work out and make more money, probably enough for you to live out of it with your current condition.

Regardless, you have savings and there are lots of opportunities if you want to come back to the standard job market, specially for an experienced leader with a competent level of English. So the risk of failing to come back is quite small.

Now, about your discipline and motivation, those are very tricky and I think they are my greatest fears, but anyhow it'd probably be a good opportunity to learn and master those skills.

By the way, I decided that from August, I'll work full time on my project for a few months and see how that goes. Feel free to contact me www.carlosbaraza.com!

carlosbaraza··on Unicorn Contributor: Complete the GitHub contribution graph in few seconds
I totally agree. PRs should get more relevance. It seems like Open Source for GitHub is creating new repositories, writing a lot of commits and getting stars to your own repositories.

I think GitHub should work on the profile page. And the green bar should be removed, in my opinion.

Most of the metrics provided by GitHub are misleading, and this is the reason why I started this project. The actual value an Engineer could provide is not reflected at all by these metrics. I do not think they benefit in any way Open Source.

Do you think the GitHub profile contributions bar is useful? Feel free to comment on this. I would like to know what people think about my reasoning.
