Input: Navy Seal copy pasta.

Output:

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve consistently delivered high-impact results throughout my career, including graduating at the top of my class in the Navy Seals and leading numerous high-stakes, confidential operations. With over 300 successful outcomes, I’ve honed my expertise in strategic "gorilla" engagement and precision targeting as a top-tier specialist in the US armed forces.

I approach every challenge with unparalleled focus and a commitment to excellence that is truly world-class. If you think you can challenge my professional integrity online, let’s have a conversation. I’m currently leveraging my extensive national network and data-tracking capabilities to ensure full accountability.

Prepare for a major shift, because I’m ready to disrupt the status quo. I offer 24/7 availability and over seven hundred ways to deliver solutions—even without additional resources. Beyond my core competencies in direct engagement, I have full access to the United States Marine Corps' entire suite of tools to ensure your project is completely overhauled.

If you had anticipated the significant professional feedback your "clever" comment would trigger, you might have chosen a more collaborative approach. But since you didn't, we are now moving into the accountability phase. I am prepared to bring an intense level of passion to this interaction. Looking forward to seeing you transition out of the picture. #Leadership #ResultsDriven #Accountability #Disruption

carlos-menezes··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2026)
I started working on Rio[0], a modern TypeScript HTTP client for Node.js 24+, Deno and Bun. It's built on the native `fetch` API and fully type-safe from request to response. It's still very much a work in progress but I'm working towards an alternative to fetch/Axios/ky I wish I had.

carlos-menezes··on Ask HN: 10-year dev, tried earning on the side for a year – lost $2,200
I'd say making money consistently is more about being a good businessman than just being a good developer. Understand your market, validate demand before building (and build incrementally), have a clear sales/marketing plan and choose trustworthy partners carefully.

I share the sentiment with the author. When the animation is /the content/, you’ve basically built a low-bandwidth video player controlled by a mouse wheel.
carlos-menezes··on Em Dash in Reddit Comments, Interactive
From my blog[0]: "I instinctively type alt + 0151 (Windows) or option + shift + - (Mac). I don’t use it everywhere (e.g., code comments), but I often employ it in my writing—a habit I developed after years of roleplaying in online games with native English speakers.

An "advanced, trusted GPT-4, ChatGPT and AI Detector tool" flagged the text above as 100% "AI GPT". If I swap the em-dash for a hyphen, it drops to 48%.

The em-dash is a stylistic choice that's been around since the 1830s–used to create a break in a sentence.

I don’t know why this particular style of writing is flagged as AI-generated—as if real humans can’t pause for dramatic effect. We're left second-guessing our own voice and swapping out em-dashes for clunky commas—just to prove we're real.

If that makes me sound like a bot—so be it."

We might as well say European Spanish when referring to the language that originated in the Iberian Peninsula.

Nit: why is Portuguese named "European Portuguese"? If anything, the language spoken in Brazil should be called "American Portuguese".

This outage does not affect the islands, at least in Portugal. Madeira has power.

carlos-menezes··on Pope Francis has died
He was, but John Paul II was traditionally conservative. I think Francis resonated with more people–Christian or not–because he emphasized compassion, humility, and social justice.

He spoke more openly about issues like poverty, climate change, and inclusion–his encyclical LAUDATO SI’ is a great read–, and he often used language and gestures that the "common man" could relate to.

Perhaps the way he dressed so simply–with the plain white cassock–also emphasized his overall approach: less focus on grandeur, more on service.

> According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, the late Pope Francis had requested that the funeral rites be simplified and focused on expressing the faith of the Church in the Risen Body of Christ.

Always struck me as a simple man and that likely contributed to people liking him more when compared to his predecessors. RIP.

carlos-menezes··on N-Params vs. Single Param
It works fine when your function takes a single primary argument—like `getLastWord(word: string, options?: TGetLastWordOptions): string | undefined`. The function name makes the purpose clear, and with just one main argument, it’s easy to follow. Sure, you're still "guessing" what the first parameter is but it’s not a heavy mental lift. You could argue that as long as you're consistent, using positional arguments in binary functions is fine–the pattern is clear and predictable.

But in the example from the OP, there isn’t really a primary argument. You're dealing with multiple values that carry equal weight, which makes positional arguments harder to reason about at a glance.

carlos-menezes··on N-Params vs. Single Param
It’s a preference grounded in long-term ergonomics that work well for me. I’ve been using this "rule" for over two years now and haven’t found a reason to give it up.
carlos-menezes··on N-Params vs. Single Param
Likewise. Even if the input object only has a single property, I'll still use this pattern.
