carlnewton··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
> all data should be kept within the community, not public.

I would recommend it for everything you said except for this part. Everything posted is publicly visible by design. I'm afraid I have no intention of changing that. You're free to fork it if you want though.

I'm still working on Habitat. It's a free and open source, self-hosted social platform for local communities. The plan is for it to be federated, but that's a while off yet.

I finally cracked ansible/docker-compose provisioning on Ubuntu and plan to expand that out to support Debian also. The groundwork is there. I can finally see an official release in the distant horizon, I just need to put those quality of life features in now, like the ability to delete your own account, change your email address, notifications on comments and all that stuff.

carlnewton··on Ask HN: Anyone building a non AI product/startup?
Yes! No interest in AI whatsoever. I'm building a free and open source, self-hosted social platform for local communities.

I recently spoke with a Lemmy developer who gave me some advice on making it easy for anyone to host. I was struggling with the mess of supporting both docker and VM hosting. He told me that Lemmy uses ansible provisioning to install docker compose on the target VM so that the effort can be focused on docker support, so that's what I've been homing in on for the last few weeks.

carlnewton··on Ask HN: Organize local communities without Facebook?
Mate! I'm building exactly this! https://carlnewton.github.io/posts/building-habitat/

Let me know if this is what you're after and you want some help setting up an instance.

carlnewton··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2024)
Hey, sorry, I didn't initially see this comment. It looks like Jodel could be similar if you were to set up a Habitat instance that exclusively didn't allow for locations to be attached to any post, but that's not what I have in mind, and it's not how my instance will be set-up, because the location attached to the post is what I'm seeing as one of the main purposes of Habitat. In most cases, I envision a post representing an exact location. Perhaps a building, a country park, or a monument or something. Jodel looks like generic discussions that are filtered by proximity, which Habitat would have also by nature of federation, but the posts will be about places, and focused around a map-location of those places.
carlnewton··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2024)
Thanks, I'll give the trust system some thought. These are both systems that could be turned on or off per instance so I'm theory they could both exist. I was thinking that the instance administrator would have to be the one to prove the images for the captcha.
carlnewton··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Thanks so much! I work on it almost every weekend so hopefully you'll continue to see good progress.
carlnewton··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Yeah this is something I've been thinking about recently, not so much in terms of the difficulty of managing spam on a per post basis, as I'm thinking that the instances will be very small and moderation on that front should be easy, so long as you can keep the problematic user from signing up in the first place. One thing I've been thinking is that perhaps there could be a captcha-like solution that will benefit from the limited location. For instance: Select only images that are of this location. Local users will know, bots will struggle. It doesn't stop anyone else from using Google street view or something but it does make the bar the bit higher. I don't know how to deal with the obvious accessibility issue with this though so I'm going to keep it in mind until I get around to that sort of thing. Long term of course we're going to have the issue with federated spam also, so I don't want to implement a solution that will only be in my way in the long run.
carlnewton··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Awesome! For me, the desire is very much about the place and not personalities or any kind of ego attached to their posts, so I've avoided any kind of functionality that will allow to follow a person, or see what else a particular person has posted, but we'll see how it evolves. If you have any programming experience, I do recommend just diving in rather than waiting for someone else to do it, as I have discovered that a lot of people seem to think that they share my vision but when it comes down to the details they have their own thing in mind. So if you want this Instagram with locations to exist, you might find that someone else's vision doesn't quite meet your desires for it.

I'm still working on Habitat. It's a self-hosted social platform for local communities. The plan is for it to be federated, but that's a while off yet. I want it to be easily installable for those who want to host using docker, and for those who want to host on an EC2 instance or something, because online services for docker hosting are quite expensive, so I've been working recently on ansible setup, and it's proving quite difficult, so if anyone with the experience fancies helping out, I'd be more than happy to receive contributions.

carlnewton··on Ask HN: Who's building an AI-free product?
Hey, I'm sorry, I missed this comment. It's still in early development but if you have experience setting up docker environments, it should be possible to set it up locally. I've put a lot of work into investigating production setup in recent weeks but I haven't yet published any of that, but if you want any help with local setup I'd be happy to problem solve.
carlnewton··on Ask HN: Who's building an AI-free product?
Oh yes, no interest in AI whatsoever. I've been working on Habitat for the last 4 months. It's a self-hosted social platform for local communities. The plan is for it to be federated, but that's a while off yet.

carlnewton··on Ask HN: I found an obscure bug with Firefox. Is it worth reporting?
I think the behaviour you're describing is that a non-numeric value in a number field doesn't trigger the change event in JavaScript. I don't know if it would necessarily be a bug, but a difference in behaviour between Firefox and Chrome. In trying it with the JavaScript querySelector instead, it looks like Chrome restricts the input on keypress, whereas Firefox restricts it ahead of the change event. You could always use the keypress event, but looking at your snippet, it looks like you could just use the min and max attributes of the number field instead?

I've never heard of it, but I'm on the lookout for a new sci-fi read, so I think I'll get it! Thanks!
carlnewton··on Equinox.space
I just opened it again to make sure I wasn't imaginging it. Oddly enough, A works to strafe left for me, but D doesn't work to strafe right. I'm using Firefox 121.0.

Edit: ignore me! It's one of my plugins!

This is amazing! The visual style is stunning. This actually comes very close to a style of game I've wanted to exist for a long time. The premise being this: You're on a ship going between destinations, but there's no light-speed shortcut, or jump-cut to the destination. Instead, you have to maintain the ship for the entire duration of the journey. Making sacrifices in power and computing ability to resolve problems that occur throughout the ship.

Over the past year or so I’ve been playing with the idea of a decentralised social platform based on your location. By putting physical location at the centre of the experience, such a platform could be used to bring communities together and provide a source of local information when travelling. Please let me know what you guys think.
