carey··on An Ode To W3Schools
Mozilla have their own called Thimble at https://thimble.webmaker.org/. Some more interaction between MDN and Thimble would be nice.
carey··on My IQ
A properly _standardised_ test should at least have been administered to enough people that you were in the minority of the kind of people it was standardised against. Actually, a properly standardised test should have discarded questions like that if their answers weren’t reliable.

In any case, it is quite unlikely that the test you took could reliably distinguish between scores above 145.

carey··on Sugar, acid and teeth (2009)
Fructose is metabolised by the liver, which may only be able to handle so much at a time without negative effects. Raw fruit is digested more slowly than juice due its fibre content, so drinking juice slowly could be worse for your teeth but better for your liver.

Even modern raw fruit are significantly larger and sweeter than a few hundred years ago, so maybe we should just stick to berries.

carey··on Yes, I was hacked. Hard.
I've used a system at work that truncates passwords when setting them, but not when checking them. It doesn't fill me with confidence.
carey··on Don't wait for "DOM ready" for your app to start
YUI can poll for elements to become available, with a few workarounds for browser bugs; see http://yuilibrary.com/yui/docs/event/domready.html. I think you have to roll your own in jQuery.
carey··on Microsoft Certificate used to sign "Flame"
It doesn't really seem like something the W3C would be involved with. The IEEE isn't perfect, but should be able to look after something like this.
carey··on Who Killed Men's Hats? Think Of A Three Letter Word Beginning With 'I'
Those books also seem to be good at repeating popular wisdom unquestioned, like the story of the Romans' vomitoria.
carey··on Google Drive
https://support.google.com/drive/bin/answer.py?hl=en&ans... notes that old versions are saved for 30 days or 100 revisions, which does provide some protection.

carey··on Educator suspended when she refused to show her Facebook page
Except even they're not necessarily really private, as JWZ's story about Really Bad Attitude demonstrates: http://www.jwz.org/gruntle/rbarip.html
carey··on At hacking contest, Google Chrome falls to third zero-day attack
Not quite. http://moongazeponies.deviantart.com/art/Pinkie-Pie-the-Hack... appears to be the original.
carey··on Facebook hit git performance issue on large repository
NTFS has this optionally in the "USN Change Journal"; see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa363798.aspx. It's used by a few Microsoft features like indexing and file replication, but it's available to third party programs too.
carey··on Boing Boing will go dark on Jan 18 to fight SOPA
I wouldn't really want to count on that; Google tends to guess what common response codes mean. The safest response would probably be to use "503 Service Unavailable" with an error page.
carey··on Dropping a Magnet Through a Copper Pipe
Searching for "magnetic field paper" leads me to http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Magnetic_Field_Paper... .
carey··on New kind of metal in the deep Earth
The general theory of relativity does a really, really good job of describing gravity as a result of mass changing the shape of spacetime, and predicting its effects as a result of that. The strength of gravity only depends on the total mass, not its density, so I'd say that gravity is not an emergent phenomenon from the density of matter and energy.

(Mass is almost certainly caused by the interaction between some quantum particles and the Higgs field. I'm not clear on how that deforms spacetime, though.)

Edit: I should refresh the page before posting.

carey··on Java 7 Update 2 now with JavaFX
What they cut here was JavaFX Script, in favour of a Java API that can be used from any of the JVM languages. As http://java.dzone.com/articles/oracle-discontinue-javafx points out, this makes it more like Apache Pivot.
carey··on The Trouble with Bright Kids
It can get rather political, but the general definition of giftedness is to be in the top 5% on a good, standardised test of cognitive ability, such as the WISC or WJ-III. If you were at the top of any representative group of just 20 children of the same age, you were clearly gifted. In some schemes, a smaller number qualify as highly, exceptionally then profoundly gifted.

It's worth nothing that there's no rule that someone can't be both gifted and dyslexic, for example.

carey··on Git is exploding
In a few cases; gettext recommends autopoint, which depends on git, so it will be installed automatically if someone installs gettext.

A few packages depend on gettext that I wouldn't have expected, like blender. This might be a mistake, but anyone who installs Blender will also install git, without ever using it.

carey··on Biographer: Jobs refused early and potentially life-saving surgery
That sounds nice, but is there good evidence that this actually happens, or that if it happens that it improves outcomes or quality of life? A bit of time on Google finds http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/cam/green-tea-review, which at least found that it probably wouldn’t make things any worse.
carey··on Cringely predicts the second coming of Java
While that’s one way to do it, I believe that current JVMs use an index directly to the target object in the Java heap. Since the garbage collector is following all the references anyway, it can eventually update all the old references to point directly to an object after moving it.

In 64-bit VMs without a very large maximum heap size, the JVM usually uses "compressed" pointers, too, so 32-bit values can, in practice, address 32GB of data. Intel CPUs have addressing modes that work quite well with this. See: http://wikis.sun.com/display/HotSpotInternals/CompressedOops

Garbage collection isn’t free, but it’s getting pretty good.

carey··on Scala One Liners
By the way, it is possible to have methods and values on the package itself, like math.sin(math.Pi), but that hasn't been done with scala.io.

You can also import singleton methods, so if you write

  import io.Source._
then all the fromX methods are available directly.
carey··on Boot a linux kernel right inside your browser.
How complicated is virtio (http://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Virtio)? It's designed for guests that know they're virtualised.
carey··on IE9 has been released
As far as I can tell (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2010/08/17/ie9-opacity-an... for example), IE9 in IE9 standards mode supports neither filters nor VML. I hope I’m not too optimistic in thinking that its SVG support should be good enough to use that as a workaround.
carey··on The "vaccination causes autism" fraud
Fair enough. According to the article, the mother of two children in the original study, who referred a third, was referred to by other media as a “JABS activist”. I shouldn’t have used that term myself.
carey··on The "vaccination causes autism" fraud
tokenadult is probably referring to the BMJ article at http://www.bmj.com/content/342/bmj.c5347.full , which finds that at least four of the children in Wakefield’s study were referred to him by JABS activists.
carey··on Retracted autism/vaccine study an 'elaborate fraud,' British journal finds
This isn't particularly new; here’s an article with more details from August 2008, from Ben Goldacre’s book Bad Science: http://www.badscience.net/2008/08/the-medias-mmr-hoax/

Also worth reading is Roald Dahl’s account of his eldest daughter’s measles infection at http://www.blacktriangle.org/blog/?p=715 .

carey··on Firesheep: Easy HTTP session hijacking from within Firefox
Wildcard certificates are available for USD $49.90 from StartSSL (http://www.startssl.com/?app=40), which is rather more expensive than free, but shouldn’t be a hardship.
carey··on Simple guide to writing Elvish
In New Zealand English, you should be comparing the pronunciation of R in “red” and “car audio”, to ensure that the R is actually pronounced at all. Some accents don’t even pronounce it in the latter. (There’s a good one for the spelling reformers.)

And be careful with “ah”. I have a strong suspicion that we pronounce it very differently in New Zealand compared to North America.

carey··on Simple guide to writing Elvish
Just guessing, but in non-rhotic accents like RP and New Zealand English, the R in car is not pronounced unless the following word begins with a vowel. Any other ideas, maybe from an American English speaker?
