cardanome··on I'm helping my dog vibe code games
Not that I condone any form of gambling but I would rather play actual slot machines instead of spending hundreds of dollars on tokens in hopes that the AI blesses me with anything useful.
cardanome··on I'm helping my dog vibe code games
That also shows the delusion of some people that believe their vibe coded projects have any value.

If generative AI improves at the rate that is promised then all your "promting skills" or whatever you believe you had will be obsolete. You might think you will be an "AI engineer" or whatever and that it is other people that will lose their job, that you are safe because you have the magic skills to use the new tech. You believe the tech overlords will reward you for your faith.

Nope. You are just training your replacement.

No one will buy your game that you vibe coded. If the tech were good enough to create games that are actually fun then they would just generate their own games. Oh your skill? Yeah, a dog can do it.

Yes people will cope by saying but oh the whole initial prompt and setting it all up was still hard but yeah currently. The tech will improve and it will get more accessible. So enjoy the few months you are still relevant.

Of course there is reason to believe that you can't scale up LLMs endlessly and bigger models hit diminishing returns. In fact we might already be seeing this. So there is an upside but then again when the AI bubble pops and the economy crashes you will be out of a job all the same.

That some messed up morality. If you are right you are right.

Now what you do in reaction might be legally and morally wrong and maybe you need to be punished for that. But that doesn't negate the injustice you suffered. Two wrongs make... two wrongs. One does not negate the other.

cardanome··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
"Atrocities".

It is telling that people here discuss how the protestors in Iran are justified in using violence but Palestinians are not allowed to resist foreign occupation. Suddenly that is really bad.

Resistance is not a crime.

cardanome··on Ladybird adopts Rust, with help from AI
Yeah, I lost all interest in the ladybird project now that it is AI slop.

No one wants to work with this generated, ugly, unidiomatic ball of Rust. Other than other people using AI. So you dependency AI grows and grows. It is a vicious trap.

cardanome··on Ladybird adopts Rust, with help from AI
> I guess more anti-hype, where Rust was the hype

Yeah that is the thing I struggle with. I am really happy for people falling in love with Rust. It is a amazing language when used for the right use case.

The problem is that had my Rust adventures a few years ago and I am over the hype cycle and able to see both the advantages and disadvantages. Plus being generally older and hopefully wiser I don't tie my identity towards any specific programming language that much.

So sometimes when some Junior dev discovers Rust and they get really obnoxious with their evangelicalism it can be very off putting. Really not sure how to solve it. It is good when people get excited about a language. It just can be very annoying for everyone else sometimes.

cardanome··on What I learned designing a barebones UI engine
The job of the immediate UI is to just draw the things. Where and how you manage your state is completely up to you.

It seems you assume some sort of OO model.

> When you have a listbox of 10,000 rows and you only draw the visible rows, then the others will lose their state because of this.

Well keep the state then.

Immediate mode really just means you have your data as an array of things or whatever and the UI library creates the draw calls for you. Drawing and data are separate.

cardanome··on What I learned designing a barebones UI engine
Immediate mode UI optimizes for the worst case. That is the case you care about most for real time applications.

Retained mode is more optimal when not much changes but if a lot of stuff changes at once it can be worse. So for real time applications like your audio example or games you want immediate mode. Retained mode is better for saving battery though or can be.

cardanome··on What I learned designing a barebones UI engine
Immediate mode GUI is the way to go.

Retaining state is a pain and causes bugs. Trying to get fancy a la react and diffing the tree for changes makes not sense. That was a performance hack because changing the DOM in JS used to be slow as hell. You don't need that.

Just redraw the whole thing every frame. Great performance, simple, less bugs.

> So, they still choose to do it, right?

This discussion started with you saying how bad Hamas was for executing Fatah collaborators in 2007 so not sure what point you are making other than agreeing with Hamas.

> How Israelis refusal to admit these officials to meet Hamas’s leadership makes the crimes committed by Hamas not true?

Inviting Humans Rights Watch does not seem like the behavior of an organization that has crimes to hide. Considering it was not possible to enter Gaza, the fact finding was limited and so it is not conclusive.

Also Humans Rights Watch had to criticize "both sides" because of political pressure. It is a move to seem impartial.

Hamas does not oppress its people. It couldn't survive a day without the support of its people. It kills collaborators as any resistance movement needs to do. Nothing wrong with that.

cardanome··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
The Palestinian Authority is Fatah and yes they are forced by Israel to suppress dissent.

As for Hamas

> Human Rights Watch met with the Palestinian Authority Intelligence Services in Ramallah, but was unable to accept an offer from Hamas authorities to meet in Gaza because Israel refused to grant permits for senior Human Rights Watch officials to enter the Gaza Strip for this purpose. Israeli authorities also rejected Human Rights Watch’s request for senior representatives to enter Gaza during October 2018 to present this report at a news conference.

cardanome··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
So the worst you could find is a story from 2007 where Hamas killed five collaborators?

Not to mention that it was in the context of a coup attempt against democratically elected Hamas.

Fatah decided to betray its own people. In the West Bank it is helping Israel to oppress their own people and actively fights against Palestinian resistance.

Hamas works perfectly well together with all Palestinian resistance groups from Islamic Jihad to secular ones like the PFLP.

cardanome··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
The only mass protests in Iran I saw video evidence of have been the millions of Iranian people in the streets in the PRO-governments protests that were against the foreign intervention.

The will of the Iranian people is clear: The don't want to become slaves of Western Imperialism.

Do you really think we we Iranian government would be able to keep in power despite a brutal economic blockade, despite foreign agents constantly trying to spread unrest if it were as competent, cruel and unpopular as the Western media tell you? It wouldn't last weeks.

> 36'000 people were killed in just two nights.

You are completely delusional if you believe that number. Just the logistics of killing so many people would be insane. You are falling hard for Western propaganda.

Funny how you are not crying for the end of the Israeli regime that is committing the best documented genocide in history. How you are not criticizing Western allies like the UAE for fueling the bloody civil war in Sudan.

But Iran, yeah you got an opinion on that.

cardanome··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
Yes, the oppressive regime is called Israel.
cardanome··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
You know Venezuela, Iran, Kuba. I wonder what all these countries that western Media tells us have "oppressive regimes" have in common.

Funny how they all have spoken out against the genocide in Gaza. One would think that would be the link on why they are targeted. Maybe the problem is not humanitarian but that they are opposing US imperialism?

Just like all the times before. You know when Iraq was preparing weapons of mass destruction. When Libya needed to be bombed for the good of its people so that Islamist warmongers could destroy the country. When the US brought the Taliban into power to fight the Soviets and then invaded Afghanistan to get rid of the Taliban again. And then left and now the Taliban are fine again.

War. War never changes. It is the same old lies.

Now they want to destroy Iran.

No. I literally said

> I don't think the DDOSing is a very good method for fighting back

I am really shocked by the conditional empathy people here are showing. The doxxing isn't less bad just because the reaction to it is bad.

Its like justifying bullying because the person "deserves" it.

cardanome··on Wikipedia deprecates Archive.today, starts removing archive links
The character is completely irrelevant to whether they are a victim of doxxing.

They might be the worst person ever but that doesn't matter. People can be good and bad, sometimes the victim sometimes the perpetrator.

Is it morally wrong to doxx someone and cause them to go to jail because they are running an archive website? Yes. It is. It doesn't matter who the person is. It does not matter what their motivations are.

cardanome··on Wikipedia deprecates Archive.today, starts removing archive links
As far as I understand the person behind archive.today might face jail time if they are found out. You shouldn't be surprised that people lash out when you threaten their life.

I don't think the DDOSing is a very good method for fighting back but I can't blame anyone for trying to survive. They are definitely the victim here.

If that blog really doxxed them out of idle curiosity they are an absolute piece of shit. Though I think this is more of a targeted campaign.

cardanome··on How to choose between Hindley-Milner and bidirectional typing
I don't think saving a few keyboard strokes is a worthwhile design goal for most languages. You have to keep the types in your head anyway so it just increases the mental burden when reading the code.

At least with dynamic typing you might be in a flow state and care more about the shape of data than the types so it might be valid. But in static type land, not so sure.

But yeah as I said, definitely infer trivial things like variable types based on initializing. I am more against inferring parameter and return types and the like. The auto keyword is super useful but also can be abused when overused.

cardanome··on How to choose between Hindley-Milner and bidirectional typing
Does your language even need (complex) type inference?

Personally I am a bit skeptical about whether complex type inference doesn't do more harm than good in some cases. A valid alternative approach is to just make type declarations required. Sure infer trivial types like when doing variable assignment but other than that just expect types to be provided. This drastically cuts down on complexity and enforces more readable programs. And it gives you much better error messages.

Or go the opposite way: If you want a language that feels dynamic and leads to prototyping, well a type system that is total and complete might be too heavy. Instead of only allowing programs that are proven to be typed correctly you might want to allow all programs that you can not proved to be wrong. Lean into gradual typing. Everything goes at first and the typing becomes as strict as the programmer decides based on how much type information they add.

Those are both very valid approach. Not every language needs that level of type inference.

The problem is that now one else is currently making hardware that is competitive with apple silicone. Apple is the only one offering both performance and battery time.

I love my Thinkpads, I really do but they are bulky, loud and the battery doesn't last very long. They are not an option for many people.

For the benefit of anyone else reading these comments:

I have decided against replying to this.

Reading further comments from this person like

https://news.ycombinator.com/reply?id=47014937&goto=threads%...

Makes it clear there there is an ideological motivation here and nothing productive to be gained.

I will just state: I do have an ADHD diagnosis. Also this person clearly does not understand ADHD despite claiming to be a health care professional.

cardanome··on The three year myth
> not make it someone else problem

A great way for cultivating internalized self hatred and burn out.

You approach isn't wrong per se and might be the right one for some people. Some people need to be told to take more personal responsibility

But other people take too much personal responsibility already and only blame themselves and need to be told that they have a disability and it is their right to ask for accessibility and help. That the world is part of the problem.

So it depends.

cardanome··on The three year myth
Oh I am sorry for highlighting one of the side effects of my crippling disability.

I did not even present it as an advantage but as something that causes feelings of isolation but I guess I am bragging about it and need more humility.

My brain's filtering function is defect. Where neurotypical people see one or two possible solution my brain automatically comes up with ten which is great for creativity but also paralyzing. Where neurotypical people can easily control their focus I can't.

Now I do think people that present their ADHD as a superpower are full of shit but I think it is fair to point out that some of the aspects could also be strengths if the structure I work with would allow them to be strengths. I think that is very fair to criticize.

I assure you that a significant chunk of my energy is spend every day in adjusting my communication to the needs of neurotypical people and always second guessing myself and improving how I do that. It just sucks that they get quite angry if I ever suggested they adjust their communication just a tiny bit for my sake.

cardanome··on The three year myth
> The OCD mention functions similarly and it explains the overanalysis as a feature, not something that might be creating friction with colleagues.

Because it is both and this is a very classic problem for neurodivergent people.

As a ADHD person I could very much relate. My pattern recognition allows me to see connections and structure where neurotypical people only see chaos. I am often three, four, five steps ahead and can see potential problems and solutions so much earlier.

Of course this doesn't help. If I point these things out, I will only be met with resistance regardless if I happen to be right later on or not.

So really the best solution is to just shut up. Let them catch up eventually. It just feels so isolating and frustrating. Not only do I have to mask the deficits that ADHD gives me but also my talents.

I think this is the core issue here. OP is hated and discriminated for their OCD. Corporations are not equipped harness the talents of people that think differently. They are not a "culture fit".

I don't really have a solution. Yes you can learn to mask and play the game but that is also not healthy in the long term.

cardanome··on Show HN: I speak 5 languages. Common apps taught me none. So I built lairner
It absolutely is. I don't understand how people are so delusional to think that their AI slop has any value.

If I were fine with AI, I could just prompt the LLM myself to create a course perfectly catered to me. Why would I need you? Because your prompting skills are magic? Yeah, no. That is like charging for google search results because you searching skills are so great.

The whole problem with Duolingo is that it got so much worse once they started using AI. Switching to another AI driven project would be out of the frying pan into the fire.

cardanome··on D Programming Language
D has three high quality compiler implementations. It has been around for ages and is very stable and has a proven track record.

Zig has one implementation and constant breaking changes.

D is the far more pragmatic and safer choice for serious projects.

Not that Zig is a bad choice but to say that a unstable lang in active development like Zig would be a better choice for "serious projects" compared to a very well established but less popular lang shows the insanity of hype driven development.

cardanome··on D Programming Language
> My (likely unfair) impression of D is that it feels a bit rudderless

The more positive phrasing would be that it is a very pragmatic language. And I really like this.

Currently opinionated langues are really in vogue. Yes they are easier to market but I have personally very soured on this approach now that I am a bit older.

There is not one right way to program. It is fun to use on opinionated language until you hit a problem that it doesn't cover very well and suddenly you are in a world of pain. I like languages that give me escape hatches. That allow me to program they way I want to.
