capnorange··on Ask HN: Is Web 3.0 just crypto or something more?
buying a stock on web2 vs web3 gives interesting properties because of ownership.

for ex: take an instant USD loan on your stock, since you are the owner only your authority(signature) is needed. In web2 world you go through middlemen.

some of the cc0 licensed NFTs encourage replicas :)

capnorange··on NFT Replicas: An app to mint a replica of virtually any NFT
will minting a replica give me gated access to discord?

or showcase my collection on gallery.so?

also some of the popular NFTs these days are cc0 licensed, so they do in fact encourage copies! I hope the trend continues.

capnorange··on Crypto wallet security as seen by security engineers
1. Social recovery methods. 2. Even if you use a hardware wallet you still need to backup your seed phrase offline.

there is practically no attack vector in using infura.

Infura can't fake your can't fake your cryptographic signature. Worst case, they censor txs from your address at which point you can run your own node.

capnorange··on Ask HN: What Is the “HN” of “Web3”, Crypto, DeFi, NFT, etc
If you are an optimist, HN is not the right place to have a "pro" discussion imo. I will outline products that i'm most excited about or use regularly .

1. Decentralized exchanges: Uniswap.org, projectserum.com.

2. Stablecoins, especially USDC. I get paid for my consulting in USD from US to India with a tx fee of $0.00025 on Solana. I'm saving a lot compared to using PP/Payoneer.

3. Supporting artists I love with NFT on foundation/ opensea/magic eden(for some reason I never did this before although there are web2 sites for it).

4. Generate yield on your stable coins. I wont mention apps here since they are new and have some smart contract risks to it, DYOR.

5. Creator monetisation using unlock-protocol.com and mirror.xyz.

6. Play to earn models in games(Axie infinity and Aurory).

7. Internet native experiments on inclusive sybil resistant identities(proofofhumanity.id)

8. Crypto powered infrastructure networks (helium.com)

9. Inflation resistant currency/Digital gold(Bitcoin & lightning network).

10. Censorship resistant social media.

capnorange··on Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
I mostly optimize for dev time over performance.

Next.js, Vercel + API functions, DigitalOcean postgres with Prisma.

The biggest dev bottleneck for me was styling & css(mostly because I put away learning it!), tailwind ui components have been a big saver.

capnorange··on Visa Buys CryptoPunk #7610
I believe all NFTs should be in public domain, in the same spirit as open-source.

recent NFT projects like Nouns[1] and many others have taken this approach!

"Legitimacy is a pattern of higher-order acceptance. An outcome in some social context is legitimate if the people in that social context broadly accept and play their part in enacting that outcome, and each individual person does so because they expect everyone else to do the same."

capnorange··on Technical Analysis of the Poly Network Hack
It is more like a regular bank than anything else. A bank that uses a different transport network.

That's why decentralized stable coins like DAI and others exist :)

capnorange··on Technical Analysis of the Poly Network Hack
the smart contract has a blacklist flag that can be activated by the Tether, this prevents on-chain transfers. https://etherscan.io/token/0xdac17f958d2ee523a2206206994597c...

The USDT will be burned and the USD released to the rightful owner after law/legal approval -- https://twitter.com/paoloardoino/status/1425188386034311168

capnorange··on Central Bank Digital Currency – US Senate Testimony of Dr. Neha Narula [pdf]
> Blockchains are for trustless systems

Not necessarily. Permissionless access, composability and public data are still useful which is not possible in regulated environments.

capnorange··on Must-read psychology books
Psychology is probabilistic science, that's the best we can do given the complexities of the mind. If you want to get a taste of rigor in psychology I suggest you read some of the works by Carl Jung.

Agreed, most people looking to understand the psyche would be better off reading literature / art.

capnorange··on Move fast, but understand the problem first
most problems in startup like environments(particularly from my experience in social networks), "understanding the problem" is not as easy. That's why trial and error, moving fast works.
capnorange··on Solana Labs completes a $314M private token sale led by Andreessen Horowitz
1) Decentralization is a spectrum, BTC -> ETH -> SOL, AWS will be really difficult to get some blockchain properties: permissionless & composability. For smart contract platforms, imo some level of decentralization can be sacrificed for higher throughput, read more here: https://haseebq.com/why-decentralization-isnt-as-important-a....

2) ETH will be more secure than Solana! Solana requires both higher bandwidth and a beefy machine[1] to run a validator node. https://solanabeach.io/validators

3) Polygon is both less scalable & controlled by a multi-sig(less decentralized) which is also similar to BSC. Polygon is based on EVM, Solana is BPF/Rust based with some unique set of optimizations like Sealevel[2] which enables parallel processing.

As long as selling ASIC's are profitable -> more R&D and eventually everyone has access to the most capable ASIC's.

Off the top of my head, data from 2 years back(things might have changed now). Bitmain, one of the top 3 mining pools, 90% of their revenue was from ASIC sales rather than mining.

As long as Bitmain has competitors, they should always be able to put out the best ASIC's to the public.

capnorange··on Children Playing Blockchain
sorry, I read it wrong trying to compare it to bitcoin.

I think the author is only demonstrating PoW/PoS and not Bitcoin itself.

> Other students are paying in bricks?

This is the transaction fees.

> Is there a limit to the number of names on bricks?

Not necessary.

> And is there any indication that a name on a brick means anything (or can be exchanged for anything)?

Pride, having taken part in building the biggest building.

> Can those names be verified at any instant, anywhere in the world with near 100% confidence?

This is only about PoW/PoS, not decentralisation. Ofcourse, PoW/PoS is meaningless if participants are not able to validate.

So, in the end it's all about the pride in being able be a part of the tallest set of bricks, hah!

capnorange··on Children Playing Blockchain
the bricks are the blocks not the currency, here the value is in able to write their own names on the bricks with a sharpie.

> but without 2 years of constantly solving sudoku under their belt, they couldn't compete with the more experienced sudoku-solvers

Inaccurate analogy. Miners are more limited by cheap electricity/cooling than CPU which is more generally available.

capnorange··on BadEconomics: Putting $400M of Bitcoin on your company balance sheet
I get this argument but you can long BTC if you are long internet.

BTC has some superior properties:

1. Censorship resistance / Self custody

2. Reasonably cheap to transact large value across space.

3. Network effects

Also, gold like bitcoin have a huge monetary premium so the same argument applies.
