capex··on AI is not a coworker, it's an exoskeleton
The exoskeleton analogy seems to be fitting where my work-mode is configurable: moving from tentative to trusting. But the AI needs to be explicitly set up to learn my every action. Currently this is a chore at best, just impossible in other cases.
capex··on How Apple designs a virtual knob (2012)
Hmm, may be you're right about UX designers not wanting to explain. For instance, I certainly won't want that vertical bar for aesthetic reasons. It's just hard to defend objectively.
capex··on Why does Britain feel so poor?
False. Read Oxfam's report on the topic: https://www.oxfam.org/en/research/takers-not-makers-unjust-p...
capex··on Busy Status Bar
Agree, except the product price could be right on the buy button. Now the analytics won't tell you whether I clicked on the buy button with an intent to buy, or did I just want to know how much it is.
capex··on "She's bouncing the ball" – the uncanny way octopuses play
There's a video about an octopus solving a maze: https://youtu.be/7__r4FVj-EI?si=FH2QsL7BxlJ4h7KF. You could call that reactionary too, but at some point we have to admit octopuses do have a higher level of intelligence than we'd assume from an animal their size.
capex··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
https://adnankhan.space/ Just a couple of posts there atm, I write about usability, interaction design, service design and other things that sit on the UX spectrum of work!
capex··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
They're just advertising the tech and the platform. Probably so people could come up with some real use cases and apps for it... otherwise what's the point of introducing it a year earlier.
capex··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
Elon now reminds me of the many characters talked about in 'Ego is the enemy' https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27036528-ego-is-the-enem...
capex··on FreeTube – A Private YouTube Client
My biggest gripe with Youtube right now is how they've left channel subscription just as a long list. I have hundreds of subscriptions, and they are clearly around a few of my interests...
capex··on The Westinghouse Total Electric Home (1960) [video]
Great. This is from 50 years ago, and many of the ideas shown have come true. What about the next 50 years? Any video suggesting what we'd be able to see around the house in 2070?
capex··on This word does not exist
I'd like to read a newsletter named MetaMuffin.
capex··on Dislike button would improve Spotify's recommendations
Won't Spotify be able to tell dislikes by how quickly someone skips to the next song?
capex··on Create and share images of your source code
It does more than export an image, see here: https://github.com/carbon-app/carbon#exporting--sharing
capex··on Gibraltar, world’s only airport runway intersecting a road
In Pakistan, the Peshawar airport has a railway line crossing through the airport runway.

capex··on Ask HN: How to learn how to sell?
How do you give multiple chances to say no? Is it like persisting with further offerings or different pricing etc?
capex··on Safari 15 on Mac OS, a user interface mess
I have no affiliation with the author, but he's provided reasoning as to why he thinks the design doesn't work for him. You can window-dress the wording, but that's essentially what the article is about.

What are your reasons for 'trashing' the importance of the address bar and the need for 35 tabs?

capex··on Truck Art in Pakistan (2018)
This is the correct url: https://youtu.be/gjaH2iuoYWE
capex··on Building Your Color Palette
Practically speaking, you end up using colours many more than 3. Even designing a button needs a base colour, a hover state colour, a clicked state colour and sometimes border colours too. You can ‘wing’ it by using sass ‘darken’ etc as someone stated above, but I’ve found that to be interpreted differently by different browsers, and it’s just better to anticipate these needs and come up with the required colour stops upfront.
capex··on Show HN: Automate your feedback generation process
Love the idea. Would be interesting on the mobile.
capex··on Ask HN: Intellectually simulating Podcasts/conversations/Talk
https://historyofphilosophy.net/ has a great series on the history of philosophy.
capex··on Principles of Icon Design
In icon sets, variations in stroke thickness is a bad idea, without changing the context. People who can't evaluate design issues would simply categorise the product as "something's off here", or "I don't trust this". Your iconography has an impact at a deeper level.
capex··on Signs you’re working in a feature factory (2016)
Designing user research around watching people do something, and figuring out their needs is something I've covered in a recent post: https://adnankhan.space/user-research/2020/01/28/ask-users-f.... The idea is that your research objectives could be very different from what you're actually testing.
capex··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
Ahem... this three-eyed raven is causing serious trypophobia for me. Wonder how it passed Apple's usual aesthetic design standards.
capex··on Show HN: 2.5B people can’t afford internet – need your opinion on our solution
Not sure about how it actually works. I couldn't find the information around how you actually 'give' internet to people? Do they use their own device, or do you provide a device as well? What happens when the funding for someone runs out?
capex··on I work in an Amazon warehouse in West Sacramento
I come to HN for comments like this.
capex··on UI redesigns are mostly a waste of time
Redesigns are not just about a fresh look and feel. Features get added, some get removed. New user cohorts join in. Improvements in devices enable new capabilities. Changes in system software enable new ways of interaction. Of course, over time, a redesign becomes necessary.
capex··on What it’s like to pursue a dream for 30 years and fail
This highlights a fundamental truth about human psychology. People want to have fun without having to do much. If the boots were simply powered, as in, the person wearing them didn't have to walk in order to move from A to B, it might've attracted a large following. In fact, check out the [0] Segway Drift W1

capex··on Operation Ajax: How the CIA’s first attempt at regime change nearly failed
> Is this a joke? The world since WW2 is the most peaceful it has ever been in human history.

Not a joke, if you care to look outside the West.

capex··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Chrome Bookmarks Manager. Since its removal I haven't been able to find a good alternative for saving bookmarks on Chrome.
capex··on Uber Agrees on Southeast Asian Sale to Grab
As a tourist in Kuala lumpur last year, I had better experiences with Grab trips. They accepted cash, drivers seemed to be happier and fare was slightly cheaper.
