capableweb··on Munich court tells Netflix to stop using H.265 video coding to stream UHD
Well, I guess apparently not? Otherwise how would the court end up deciding they have to stop using HEVC, if they're not using it?
capableweb··on SwiftyEdit 1.2 Released
Interesting that something basic like a CSRF vulnerability have existed for so long in the project. I wonder what other "low-hanging fruit" vulnerabilities they have nested in there if they don't something like that right.
capableweb··on GitHub Actions Are a Problem
Is that something that actually happened, or are you talking about a theoretical case? It wouldn't surprise me if a Microsoft salesperson would do something like that, but still
capableweb··on Ask HN: What are your most used Chat GPT prompts
System: You are a SQL query assistant. You should only respond with valid SQL queries. Only respond with code, no extra words or explanation needed.

Prompt: I have a table called Users, and I want to get all the IDs, sorted in descending order

Answer: SELECT ID FROM Users ORDER BY ID DESC;

Strangely, I've found "Only respond with code, no extra words or explanation needed" to work really well with what you're looking for.

capableweb··on Ask HN: What are your most used Chat GPT prompts
> i'm using free gpt3.5 or whichever the openai free tier is at the moment.

This is your problem. Different between 3.5 and 4 is huge. I think OpenAI might even doing themselves a disservice by having 3.5 online in ChatGPT, as many think free 3.5 represent GPT overall.

capableweb··on GitHub Actions Are a Problem
And reason 0: it was never completely implemented, wasn't documented anywhere and wasn't supposed to be used by anyone at all.

It's all the linked GitHub issue, begin from the top.

capableweb··on Ask HN: Which sources cover AI developments without falling for the hype?
I was looking for something similar as well since the initial SD launch. But I've ended up just using the HN frontpage as that, with good results. Most things end up here, even if not driven by hype, and the discussions that follow usually are "Good Enough" but with quite a bit of off-topic comments.
capableweb··on GitHub Actions Are a Problem
Yeah, it's a horrible experience all around. CircleCI solved this problem like a decade ago, enabling SSH builds so you can troubleshoot straight up in the build itself, and once you've figured it out, just copy-paste the steps to your Makefile/CI config.

I don't understand how one could build a CI service so long time after CircleCI launched, and still not have that very same feature (or something similar).

capableweb··on GitHub Actions Are a Problem
> And nobody, including the current maintainers, seem to know exactly how it all works (or how it doesn't).[1]

I read through this whole issue, and I cannot find exactly what you're referring to. What message gives you the impression they don't know how it all works? Seems it's mostly people asking for updates, and eventually something similar but different got implemented.

capableweb··on GitHub Actions Are a Problem
Sounds like most Microsoft projects to be honest. Not a lot of them can be highlighted as the pinnacle of software engineering, including their GitHub Actions implementation.
capableweb··on LockBit says it's leaked 50GB of stolen Boeing files after ransom fails to land
Yes, but the context was information that would be useful for curious minds (that wanna, lets say build their own jet engine). For that purpose, these documents don't seem all that useful.
capableweb··on LockBit says it's leaked 50GB of stolen Boeing files after ransom fails to land
Judging by what Boeing said (but could just be damage control I guess), it doesn't seem like you're that lucky:

> Elements of Boeing's parts and distribution business recently experienced a cybersecurity incident

Sounds like boring data for the curious mind, unless logistics is your vice.

capableweb··on Is this radical redesign of GIMP possible now?
It's still ironic to me that the program that GTK was made for and that popularized the toolkit, haven't managed to move to its latest version yet.
capableweb··on Is this radical redesign of GIMP possible now?
If Blender could radically update their UI and UX after 25 years of the initial conception, I feel like any (FOSS) project could do it too, no matter how many options and technical details the software has.
capableweb··on What if psychedelics' hallucinations are just a side effect?
Yeah, hallucinations without the other effects of the psychedelic sounds sort of useless, unless used as a weapon, torture or something on people who don't realize it.

Trips without heavy hallucinations are still useful, but hallucinations without the trip? Not sure what the point of that would be.

capableweb··on Scandinavian spy drama: An intelligence chief who came under state surveillance
You think the amount of corruption is the same in every country, the only thing that is different is how visible it is?
capableweb··on Servo announces grant from the NLnet Foundation
Oh wow, I wasn't aware of this! So proper embedded cross-platform engine into the final binary? That'd be awesome.
capableweb··on Scandinavian spy drama: An intelligence chief who came under state surveillance
It's relative, innit? Compared to Peru where they've gone through something like 10 different presidents in the last decade because of corruption dramas, Denmark doesn't sound too bad.
capableweb··on Servo announces grant from the NLnet Foundation
> 1) there's probably a niche to be filled by an OSS browser engine focussed on embedability

Absolutely. Electron or something Electron-like with Servo embedded could be a nice outcome. Tauri already fills that niche a bit, but uses whatever the OS provides, rather than embedding anything. Would be nice with something in-between that.

capableweb··on Steve Wozniak Hospitalized in Mexico City
I've found out that chewing coca leafs is an excellent way to combat side-effects from changing altitudes. Mostly socially acceptable in central/south america as well, so don't have to worry about that. Doesn't hurt that you could replace your coffee-intake with it as well :)
capableweb··on Another Major Outage Across ChatGPT and API
I think that's about a previous outage. They seemed to have implemented a fix and saw everything green for a while. Then another outage.
capableweb··on Is AI the next crypto? Insights from HN comments
I think the Addendum is the most interesting part of this blogpost. For the decade or so I've been on HN, I don't feel like it's been getting more negative overall. But maybe it's just more discussions about various dramas overall than before, which would drag down the score I'm sure.
capableweb··on Quake Brutalist Jam II
I'm just looking for some text that explains how to do it, not to join a community. But thanks! :)
capableweb··on Quake Brutalist Jam II
What's a good entry point if one wants to get started playing? Acquire Quake (1? 2?) on Steam and then server browsers just work as-is?
capableweb··on Major outages across ChatGPT and API
In short: no.

Longer: In theory, but it'll require a bunch of glue and using multiple models depending on the specific task you need help with. Some models are great at working with code but suck at literally anything else, so if you want it to be able to help you with "Do X with Y" you need to at least have two models, one that can reason up with an answer, and another to implement said answer.

There is no general-purpose ("FOSS") LLM that even come close to GPT4 at this point.

capableweb··on Major outages across ChatGPT and API
Is it still "private" as in you have to request access?
capableweb··on Spain lives in flats: why we have built our cities vertically
Maybe isolated is a better word then, for me they feel just about the same.
capableweb··on Spain lives in flats: why we have built our cities vertically
Very nice visualization, bit slow animations but overall it was informative and looked well!

It seems they're getting the data from the catastral (official goverment data), I wonder how accurate this is? Not sure how it is in other cities around in Spain, but in Barcelona there are a ton of illegal atticos and other addons to buildings, which would add more height to the building in real life compared to the visualization.

After a quick look, I could see at least two buildings I know are taller than what the visualization says (the building next door is the same height in the visualization, but has one more floor when you see the building in real-life).

capableweb··on Spain lives in flats: why we have built our cities vertically
Indeed :) Living too far away from any metropolitan area makes me feel claustrophobic as there is usually very little social groups active in my favorite hobbies/niches unless near a city.
capableweb··on Opusmodus: Common Lisp Music Composition System
> That Opusmodus has adopted MusicXML as the de facto standard for displaying notated scores should be no surprise. This is inextricably bound up with the development of the distinctive Opusmodus Notation script (OMN). It gives the composer the means to design into the very composition of a score a host of musical details that have until now been impossible to bring together in a single line of script.
