capableweb··on Workers AI: Serverless GPU-powered inference
I missed that blog post somehow, thanks for sharing that. Bit disappointing that it's just the 7B model, it's a good starting point for fine tuning another small model, but it really isn't useful on its own.

> This is just a press release, and not a great source of in-depth info

Not sure I'd call outright lying/getting the most basic points wrong "not a great source of in-depth info", like the "local-first" part.

capableweb··on Workers AI: Serverless GPU-powered inference
Considering this is a collaboration, don't you think the agreement between them has something about feeding data back to Meta?
capableweb··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
Well, most airlines. I think both China and Russia already switched to SI units (so km/h), and supposedly ICAO recommends using km/h but there is exception for using knots and there is also no end date to stop using knots, so everyone just continues to use knots.
capableweb··on Show HN: Abuse inflight WiFi APIs to track your flight
Generally, does it add much to question a message in the footer with smaller text than usual, that seems to have been a offhand comment from the author?

It probably took you longer to formulate and write your comment than what it took for the author to add that in the bottom of the README.

capableweb··on Workers AI: Serverless GPU-powered inference
Unless I missed something, it seems they didn't share which models by parameter count they're gonna be offering, nor anything at all about cost.

Also, this strikes me as really weird phrasing:

> Llama 2 now available for global usage on Cloudflare’s serverless platform, providing privacy-first, local inference to all

"privacy-first & local inference" would be to run it locally, on your own hardware, isn't that exactly what should be referred by when using "local"? Or has the definitions of words completely gone out the window as of late?

Or: Hey, why did my AWS production server for my startup suddenly go down and I cannot access my account anymore?
capableweb··on Epic Games is laying off 16% of its staff
I love Unreal/Epic but I agree, feels like a distraction. Go back to 100% focus on making the best game engine possible by developing great games in house by using said engine.
capableweb··on Lisp Badge LE
Yeah, surprised me as well when I was trying different ways of editing text and sometimes code via touch keyboard, vim bindings was the easiest way by far.
capableweb··on SpaceX wins first Pentagon contract for Starshield
Yes, it does. The government, indirectly or directly can indefinitely owe any entity money, or even print money on demand if really necessary and ultimately, Musk is just a person.
capableweb··on There's a mechanical watch feature called a “hack”
So you are our personal threadreader? How can we reach you when we want a thread "Chartodon"ed? :)
capableweb··on There's a mechanical watch feature called a “hack”
As someone who just got infected by a friend to start looking into watches, and now this thread, why wouldn't you get into it? I'm already looking for the cheapest tools and cheapest mechanical watch I could purchase to take apart and put together again. Why not give it a try?
capableweb··on There's a mechanical watch feature called a “hack”
Side-note, this page is also the second menu item in the topbar, called "Threads" :)

> Why did you feel the need to quote almost all of a parent comment before submitting your own?

In addition to what parent said, sometimes people sneakily edit their comments after your reply, and the part you answered to goes missing/changes substantially.

capableweb··on Raspberry Pi 5
So with this PCIe 2.0 x1 port, would I be able to connect a GPU to this Raspberry? Would be very useful, even if the bandwidth would be horrible.
capableweb··on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
> That's true. But it's not excluding display stuff.

How many product landing pages talk about what you cannot do with the product or what it doesn't include? That'd be a very strange landing page for a product...

capableweb··on Show HN: Carton – Run any ML model from any programming language
Maybe you and I have different understandings about what "Proof of Concept" means, but if you're supposed to deliver cross-language interoperability and have successfully delivered it to three different languages with wildly different runtimes, I think I'd consider that a successful proof of concept and since you're demonstrated that the bindings works for at least two other languages, it's more or less trivial to get it to work for N other languages, so this is clearly beyond the proof of concept stage at this point, and trying to reach a maturity stage instead.
capableweb··on Show HN: Carton – Run any ML model from any programming language
It's a fairly common way of bundling multiple files into one that has large support and usually "good enough" compression.

It's hardly revolutionary to do this, here are some common examples of things that are zip files but don't label themselves as such:

- .jar

- .odt, .ods, .odp, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx

- .epub

- .apk

- .crx, .xpi

capableweb··on Show HN: Carton – Run any ML model from any programming language
I think this Carton project is on a lower level than Triton. With Triton you'd start the Triton server then make requests against it, while Carton is more like a library that you include in your application/library and code it with the same language you'd write your application/library.
capableweb··on Valve releases Counter-Strike 2
The storage requirement is inflated. On disk, CS2 takes 33,6 GB (36 090 429 440 bytes), which is less than 50% of the mentioned 85GB.
capableweb··on Valve releases Counter-Strike 2
High quality models, textures, animations and more takes a lot of space, like a lot a lot.

But, I just installed CS2 and I think it only downloaded about 20GB or so, that maybe decompresses to about 40GB in the end. Maybe someone else can verify what it ended up taking on disk?

And also teams within the product pushing for different things, like the recent Google Marketing Team vs Google Chrome Team wanting different approaches.

Third time this month, so yeah almost.

The full quote is:

> Stay connected with hands-free calls and messages and listen to your favourite tracks through built-in speakers.

Which makes it seem pretty clear they're talking about stuff you can do because of the speakers.

Then later:

> No more stopping to answer your phone. Also, make calls and send messages on WhatsApp, Messenger and SMS, completely hands-free – simply by using your voice.

capableweb··on Hackers are spoofing themselves as GitHub's Dependabot to steal user passwords
Well, it works to every repository the user who is doing the spoofing has access to, private or public. If the user has access to your private repository via the GitHub ACL, they'll be able to create a PR to it with their spoofed profile.

But yes, if you have a private repository only you and dependabot has access to, no user would be able to perform this spoof against your repository.

capableweb··on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
> Wow dang, they really should make this more obvious.

How? It's not mentioned anywhere that this is about displaying content, but it's very clear it's about capturing video and listening to audio only.

Or you want them to put "Notice: No display is included in the device" on the landing page?

capableweb··on Meta Quest 3
True, but nowhere near the level that a game would. As an example, it'll be hard to find a productivity/office application that is bottlenecked by the GPU, while for games, it's relatively easy to find.
capableweb··on Meta Quest 3
Sure, but those only get rendered when stuff is actually changing on the screen, otherwise it stands still, compared to games which would (usually at least) continue to render N FPS no matter if the screen is identical or not compared to previous frame.
capableweb··on Meta Quest 3
Personally I discovered them a week ago myself, so I'm happy to spread this new experience to others :)
capableweb··on Your nines are not my nines (2019)
In addition, some requests are more important that others.

`/assets/app_bundle.js` failing will most likely be visible immediately and make everything else useless, unless you've been clever and only used JS for upgrading website/app experience, rather than replacing

`/metrics/user-activity` failing won't (shouldn't) have any impact on the user experience

`/stripe/payment-succeeded-callback` failing could have disastrous impacts on the user, but not immediately be visible when it's failing.

A lot! Go here https://huggingface.co/spaces/HuggingFaceH4/open_llm_leaderb..., check "Hub license" on the left then sort by that column in the table.

Estimating, there is more than 100 models with a apache-2.0 license.
