"get a pen and paper out, design the structure, calculate the angles"

In that vein, this can be quite fun -

"Not every good idea can make a profit." - - - - -

One might argue, that by definition a 'good idea' is one that is profitable for its pursuer.

Don't confuse the exchange of federal reserve notes for profit.

By your saying "When you demand that all ideas do, you'll be missing out..." I take it you are not confused in this regard.

Have any links? Has he written much on such topics?
canoebuilder··on Ask HN: How effective are "share this" buttons?
Like so many things, the answer to do they "really work?" will be quite variable.

In the interest of optimizing screen space you might look into implementing something like this.

canoebuilder··on Ask HN: What is your favorite TED talk?
If you have an interest in Buddhism, I recommend this book- http://www.amazon.com/Quantum-Lotus-Journey-Frontiers-Buddhi... , The Quantum and the Lotus, by Ricard and Trinh Xuan Thuan, an astrophysicist. In it they discuss the parallels of modern science and Buddhism. The books format makes a compelling subject even more so, as it is presented as a dialogue. i.e.

Ricard: Lorem Ipsum

Thuan: Lorem Lorem Ipsum

Ricard: Lorem Ipsum?

Thuan: Lorem Ipsum =)

canoebuilder··on Cymbolism - quantifying association between colors and words
This looks like an interesting site, something I've long been interested in, colors and their emotive inductions.

This site looks to have set up a nice data gathering method, they are not pioneers in the field though, as lots of work on the subject exists already, but more won't hurt.

Some things I recall -

red & yellow - can induce hunger (McDonalds)

blue - calming, trust

green - peace, calming (nature)

Another thing I recall reading is that people are more trusting of websites with white backgrounds. Though this could simply stem from the fact that the majority of 'major' websites people are familiar with have white backgrounds.

I'm not entirely keen on the hubbub refered to(the articles on Lisi from about this time last year?)

Here is another article I read the other day, probably pretty similar, but it wasn't bad

It's mostly a metaphor for early peoples who used the empty space they created in cut down trees for more efficient means of progress.

The literal sense does interest me as well, though. Where do you pilot your canoes?
