cannonedhamster··on Useless Windows 10 Features
Windows defender goes from consistently being one of the best options to no good and then back to one of the best regularly. Generally browsing Gavin are the thing that saves you not than antivirus these days.
cannonedhamster··on Useless Windows 10 Features
I say this in all seriousness, Linux is probably a better experience if that's all she does. Give something like Ubuntu or elementary os test run with a live version and see if she's missing anything you'll either find out she needs Office specifically or it will probably work for her. Linux right now is in a great spot for people who need little customization and people who really love to tinker. If you're in the middle of that group is where friction lives. If linux won't work for you then the suggestions above are great.
cannonedhamster··on Michael Crichton: Why Speculate? (2005)
Guy who literally made his career on fear mongering in fiction and speculation gets mad if other fields do it. No self reflected irony at all there. I have a hard time reading this as anything other than a continuation. He has a habit of not seeing the forest through the trees. Instead of focusing on the fact that human caused extinctions have created a literal new age of extinction, he focuses on a specific point because his goal is to discredit science. It's why so many of his books focus on scientists being arrogant egotists. In fairness he wrote this before it became a political taking point, but his type of rhetoric directly lead to the political environment we have now. He's an example of everything he claims is wrong. He demonizes sources with proven track records and he doesn't understand. Why should we take his opinion seriously?
cannonedhamster··on Major book publishers sue Amazon’s Audible over new speech-to-text feature
Replying to a reply of this. What copyright exhaustion? They just keep changing the rules to make it longer without the consent of anyone act we have no say in it. The average person in the US thinks the copyright length is insanely long. Legally if someone keeps changing the contract without the consent of all parties shouldn't that contract be null and void?
cannonedhamster··on U.S. tech companies are building a Chinese-style social credit system
We welcome all people and religions in my church. Some people are vehemently pro choice. We're big on coffee time after service. Just look for your local Unitarian universalist church. Every one of them is slightly different and mostly crazy, but we're serious about our after service coffee time.
cannonedhamster··on The phpCE 2019 conference in Dresden has been cancelled and won't be continued
A group with a self interest to have a certain outcome exist find that outcome to exist. It's a bit hard to say that this is a well made study with that conflict of interest involved. Don't get me wrong there are definitely problems abound and studies to support that position, I just don't think Bustle or Sky are the rigorous organizations to lead that charge. I was never encouraged to go into technology, my family wanted be to go into law. I went into tech well before there was any real indication in schools to do so because it made me feel less lonely. There's also the risk of trying to over correct and pushing people into careers that they aren't suited for, and that affects both genders as well. A more troubling correlation has been that women enter a traditionally make dominated field pay for everyone in that field goes down. Why we would suddenly value a field less because of gender is an interesting problem to understand. Another issue is that traditional gender roles for parenting may contribute to the problem. There's no way currently to address that problem without massive societal changes or law specific to address that. The issue is more complex than just a simple men are told to go one place women the other.
cannonedhamster··on How to become a great impostor
He committed identity theft, desertion, petty theft, and probably a few more. Those are real crimes with real victims. Not to mention the people that received substandard medical care that could have killed them. Don't gloss over crime just because the guy has a good story.
cannonedhamster··on Consume less, create more
All art is a conversation between the artist and the viewer. I'm fairly certain that's a phrase I've heard before. If your goal is to just spew your ideas out a megaphone without any thought as to how it would be received then quality doesn't matter as your need for expression is fulfilled in the act. When you're trying to convey an idea that you think matters, that you feel is important, then you spend a lot more time in getting it as close to right as you can. This is because you're looking for a response, whether that's in words, action, or reaction. I think your comment is spot on.
cannonedhamster··on In Amazon’s Bookstore, Orwell Gets a Rewrite
This is a different thing than copyright and is ironically far shorter in time limited for anyone to use.
cannonedhamster··on In Amazon’s Bookstore, Orwell Gets a Rewrite
Amazon is both a bookseller and a book publishing platform. Those should be split. Just because it's inconvenient for Amazon doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. That's kind of the whole point of antitrust law. The market is not necessarily better when it's efficient because it's controlled by a single entity. Do you all imagine yourselves as future robber barons with mustaches to twirl?
cannonedhamster··on In Amazon’s Bookstore, Orwell Gets a Rewrite
Amazon claims that the opaque sellers on their platforms are liable for what's sold on their platform, yet does no real verification on sellers, doesn't eliminate outright fraud, and allows known counterfeiters on their platform. Amazon provides no legal redress for harms caused by their platform and doesn't give you an address to go after since they comingled all the items that claim to be a single SKU. Amazon claims that they are completely unable to be held accountable for anything sold on their platform and has maintained this in court cases.
cannonedhamster··on Empty trains on the modern Silk Road: when Belt and Road interests don’t align
Uh... Did you read the article you cited? It literally said the area is still empty they just stopped including it as part of the city and only included the inhabited part, though that part was already full of people before those buildings went up. It's more of a quirk in how cities are defined as administrative regions instead of distinct urban areas. The buildings are still empty though. Like most things in China it's lots of talk and flash, little real magic behind the show.
cannonedhamster··on WiringPi – deprecated
The author owes nobody anything. He's already done enough. If you've given away something for free, don't expect support or anything free in the future. It's literally like taking a gift from someone and then complaining that it doesn't have enough for you to act indignant to people who give things away for free. Don't like it? Don't use it or improve it and contribute back. Want more? Pay them to build it and add it to what's available for everyone as a way to say thanks.
cannonedhamster··on Amazon has proven unable or unwilling to effectively police third-party sellers
In my case the company changed an actually very good scale with a back massager from the same company. The scale was moved to a new ad. I was actually planning on buying another item from then until I saw this.
cannonedhamster··on Streaming Video Will Soon Look Like the Bad Old Days of TV
How about we just enforce the law that already exists. You completely missed where I said outlawing aggregated storefronts, and just went to a straw man argument I didn't make. Netflix making their own content and being a distributor is against vertical integration laws, it's just not being enforced. Microsoft selling their own product isn't an issue. Amazon/AWS/Kindle publishing should be forcibly broken up. Amazon controls the entire vertical it's a monopoly that positions it's own products at an advantage. The Microsoft store controlling the only access to Windows would be a problem.

Your AWS example falls flat on it's face the product you're still buying is hosting, not an Elastic license. That's like suggesting because a television comes with a free soundbar it's illegal. No one is suggesting that. Stop using the slippery slope against common sense policies that would prevent the market concentrating on the hands of a few gatekeepers.

cannonedhamster··on Amazon has proven unable or unwilling to effectively police third-party sellers
I've had a review I wrote for one product entirely switched to another product. I've seen some products for USB cables with reviews for books made for infants. Amazon is so untrustworthy now I'll either go to Alibaba or buy direct. It's dangerous to buy from Amazon. I wish you the best in this, I've reported ads like this for fraud before.
cannonedhamster··on Streaming Video Will Soon Look Like the Bad Old Days of TV
Yeah, but content producers still haven't realized that our time is more valuable than their usually garbage product, their product is overvalued, and no one feels bad about pirating because copyright is so fundamentally broken by the same content providers that the contract between the public and producers has been totally violated.
cannonedhamster··on Streaming Video Will Soon Look Like the Bad Old Days of TV
You mean software companies owning their own aggregator storefronts? Yes. I'd for banning Steam or Epic from both making games and owning the storefront if it meant Apple and Google had to give them up too. No one says music companies or even movie companies can't sell their own stuff on their own site. What they are saying is that just like the antitrust laws made it illegal for movie companies to also own the theaters, no one in thIe digital age should be able to vertically or horizontally monopolize either. I.E. The law that already exists should apply today too.
cannonedhamster··on Streaming Video Will Soon Look Like the Bad Old Days of TV
It's well past time for there to be a mechanical license for streaming copyrighted video content. This lock down garbage is just that. Copyright is a joke that provides zero benefit to the public, little benefit to the starving artist, and almost all the benefit to the mega corporations. Sonny Bono is a plague on creativity and his law was even worse.
cannonedhamster··on Milton Friedman's "Shareholder" Theory Was Wrong
That would assume the law wasn't subject to regulatory capture. In theory high fines exist, in practice they really don't. See the debacle with Equifax and not having any real money in the fines to make people whole for their wholesale credit history being breached.
cannonedhamster··on Why All of Our Games Look Like Crap
I grew up playing the Exile series on shareware, then I migrated to Avernum. I have yet to find any series of games that I can get more value out of. The sheer depth in the games Spiderweb software puts out is why I'll buy pretty much everything they make. If I had to pick a gaming hill to die on this developer would be it. The graphics do their job. Could they be flashier? Sure, whatever. Aside from the Elder Scrolls series I can't think of a game that even comes close in time to finish and the sheer amount of replayability. Nothing in the game is a grind. There's always something do do while you're collecting gear, etc.
cannonedhamster··on Anti-sex toilets to spray users with water jets
Depends on upkeep and environment. Some wood structures in very dry locales can and do last ages without any real upkeep. There's some very, very old wood houses at the Romanian house museum, which is a great place to visit.
cannonedhamster··on Doc Martens’s vegan boot business is thriving
Yeah there's a lot of garbage vegan clothing out there. Good shoes typically set you back a few hundred unless you can get them on sale. Novacas is a great brand but you can only find them at resellers really Mooshoes has a pretty good selection but they are definitely going to be higher end shoes. Totally I find myself looking for the all man made materials on the label
cannonedhamster··on Texas Power Prices Briefly Surpass $9k Amid Scorching Heat
I lost 10lbs just switching to diet soda. It's definitely not a small change if you're drinking soda often like I was. I eventually moved off of soda entirely.
cannonedhamster··on Texas Power Prices Briefly Surpass $9k Amid Scorching Heat
Switching to eating a cheese pizza a week in place of a meat meal would do far more for the environment overall and be almost negligible for most people yet no one really does it because it's hard to virtue signal that.
cannonedhamster··on Texas Power Prices Briefly Surpass $9k Amid Scorching Heat
We've literally had storage systems based on lakes for ages. They use them for coal plants. Find a naturally occurring underground vault of which there are many in Texas find two Chambers of differing height, pump higher when you have excess, reverse when you need more. Initial costs are high but it's cheaper than new plants.
cannonedhamster··on Texas Power Prices Briefly Surpass $9k Amid Scorching Heat
Sounds like Texas needs better insulation standards for their housing.
cannonedhamster··on Texas Power Prices Briefly Surpass $9k Amid Scorching Heat
Yeah Texas just has rolling blackouts every other month. Totally reliable and not considered an outage how?
cannonedhamster··on Netflix’s biggest bingers get hit with higher internet costs
Yes. Everyone still needs to go to work at the same time so the resources are still going to be used at the same time. It's charging extra for standard expected usage that the ISPs have known exists for years. If this were really an issue there wouldn't be so much dark fiber in the US hooked into copper cable local loops.
cannonedhamster··on Netflix’s biggest bingers get hit with higher internet costs
Doesn't to me when they use our tax dollars to expand their infrastructure to the most profitable places then leave last mile loops to the customers to pay and constantly reneg on they're contractual agreements with zero repercussions.
