cannonedhamster··on We’re Getting Ripped Off
The current system is because of wage fixing by the government during WW2. It was a way for employers to differentiate at a time when wages weren't available as an option. I agree that the free market is the place to do this.
cannonedhamster··on Dropbox CTO Resigns
Nextcloud? A NAS device? Google Drive? Practically all of these are cheaper and have the same or better usefulness. There's actually a ton of storage options out there.
cannonedhamster··on Dropbox CTO Resigns
Doesn't work on Linux which is what the quote you're referencing is talking about. Office365 comes with it's own challenges. Plus your documents are all scanned and there is no privacy protection, especially not from the US government.
cannonedhamster··on If You Want to Go Broke, Listen to a Billionaire
We did. It was the lowest cost loan we could get and the original value kept growing. It was basically just like getting a loan from the company in our case at zero percent interest. Not sure everyone gets those same benefits.
cannonedhamster··on Pizza robot makes 300 pizzas per hour
Uh, yes you can. Robots are already being used for battlefield simulations coming up with moves humans couldn't think of. They beat humans in Go by finding better moves that's entirely creative. They write news articles, paint, create music, and help in diagnosis of disease. Humans are all going to be replaced soon enough. We'll be serving AI masters or wiped out within 50 years tops.
cannonedhamster··on Train speed record set between London and Bristol
Yes I've often wondered why trains are so expensive compared to airplanes as well. We have a him but it's literally cheaper and faster to fly and that makes no sense.
cannonedhamster··on Train speed record set between London and Bristol
Where are you getting these amazing 50MPH trains? Do they run on some new type of magic energy source? We're lucky when they break 30MPH here. It takes longer to take the train than to sit in bumper to bumper traffic.
cannonedhamster··on Ships fitted with ‘cheat devices’ to divert poisonous pollution into sea
Because people will take jokes as reality. See Storm Area 51.
cannonedhamster··on Stallman Still Heading the GNU Project
You should really look it up. He posted multiple prior blog posts on his website about it. There's a link someone provided further down in the chain. It surprised me as well when I learned of it, but he injected himself into that debate willingly and deliberately.
cannonedhamster··on Stallman Still Heading the GNU Project
No one is saying tear down everything he had ever done. All that's been said is that someone with a history of being aggressive, supporting of paedophilia, unable to determine appropriate times to debate, and lacking social graces wasn't the best person to lead an organization. RMS has had a long history of getting a pass for his actions because of his skill and passion, he was excused for behaviors that would get most people fired. Humans tend to act like this, a long buildup of frustration followed by quick action once a boiling point is reached. Look at most civil wars for instance. I think RMS made the right decision by stepping back and not letting the outrage fall onto the organizations he's part of. As is abundantly clear from the comments here, RMS will never lack for support regardless of what he does, so I don't think anyone needs to be concerned about him landing on his feet, he's going to be absolutely fine.
cannonedhamster··on ‘Fleeceware’ apps overcharge users for basic app functionality
The correct way to opt out of the trial can sometimes require leaving the Google ecosystem, i.e. you must submit an email, which clearly isn't how Google wants these to run. It's also sometimes done as white on white text, text too small to read on a mobile device, or text that's buried in a a TOS intentionally. These aren't people legitimately attempting to offer a service, they are trying to dupe people.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: How did you prepare for being a first-time parent?
90% of parenting is just being there. You have to show up and most everything else falls into place. Get lots of diapers. Don't give them alcohol or drugs. Baby powder. Wipe front to back and always put the baby onto something in case they blew the diaper out. Be kind to your sibling when you get tired and frustrated. Be kind to yourself. A trick that worked to get my child to sleep was gently tapping between the eyebrows. It made them blink which if they are already tired can help speed the process along.
cannonedhamster··on French high court rules that Steam can’t ban users from reselling digital games
It's not that they're not getting it, it's that your point is a poor one. A physical copy also came with the costs of storage, storefronts, retail space, manufacture, shipping, etc. None of that is true now. A digital copy costs almost nothing to store and retrieving that copy is again a nearly costless process. The only person who loses by locking up digital goods is the consumer. You're making the same arguments film studios made about VHS, except VHS caused movie studios to make more money than ever because it forced then to make better stories and movies. What do we get now that there's the digital push? Rehashed super hero stories and 90s nostalgia.
cannonedhamster··on French high court rules that Steam can’t ban users from reselling digital games
VAC bans are account based and can impact multiple games at once. A new user installing the software couldn't be tied to that account. The original user is still banned. That said you might be prevented from reselling as a form of punishment. I'm guessing that it wouldn't be difficult to set up a new account, however it couldn't be associated with the same MAC addresses.
cannonedhamster··on French high court rules that Steam can’t ban users from reselling digital games
No they are saying that if you buy a meal, you should be able to package it up and sell it to someone else, which you can do. If I go buy a hamburger, I can walk right out onto the street and if someone else offers me money for it I can sell it. What I can't sell is access, which is what a buffet is, you're not paying for the individual item you're paying for access to the buffet.
cannonedhamster··on French high court rules that Steam can’t ban users from reselling digital games
Prime movies is all you can watch rental service. Buying movies from Amazon digital is buying a perpetual license. The distinction is in selling access versus selling goods.
cannonedhamster··on French high court rules that Steam can’t ban users from reselling digital games
So if a license is what's on the disc. You can sell a license. The only difference is that it's on the hard disk of your computer. Steam can still ask for a portion of the proceeds as a digital marketplace.
cannonedhamster··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
I was genuinely surprised myself. I've heard many of the same stories, but he was completely patient with me as I gushed my appreciation to him as he got off of a train and treated me with the utmost respect. I am not able to pick up on social cues easily myself but have worked very hard to become good at it. This is why I know it's possible to learn this skill of one puts in the effort.
cannonedhamster··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
You're correct. I read deposition and made the incorrect connection.
cannonedhamster··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
Legality has nothing to do with morality. What morality is there in saying that you cannot pass a vehicle in a tight lane? None. It's a safety concern. Morals only concern religion. Ethics concern right or wrong. Law concerns a group of defined social agreements between people within a defined region. While the basis of some of our laws has a history of Christian influence, our laws in and of themselves do not require morality. An atheist is no more likely to go on a murderous rampage than a Christian, ethically it would be wrong. That kind of timing is built into humanity as a whole because it's required for civilization and predates religion. You see it in animal species as well. Heck a dog sees the benefit in not murdering their master.
cannonedhamster··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
Apparently people just got fired over at Kickstarter for wanting to going a union. Also I think you forget that the national guard have been called in and killed Union members in the Pennsylvania coal fields for unionizing. Also Reagan with his union busting. I had a boss who literally sent an email out to the entire company saying he was increasing our healthcare costs by cutting our benefits if Obama won and he did. The stuff you're taking about happens all the time.
cannonedhamster··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
Brendan Eich gave money to a cause that would have limited the rights of his employees. He actively chose to do that. If you're willing to publicly support a position you should not be surprised if it had ramifications. It doesn't matter if no one knew about whether or not he discriminated against employees, it's an appearance of impropriety and his actions outside of work led to a destabilisation of the company inside work. Same thing has happened numerous times to numerous people across any number of issues. It used to be that association with PoC could get you blacklisted. Then there was the Red scare. This has always been happening and most likely always will.
cannonedhamster··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
There's a time and a place for philosophical arguments. RMS chose poorly in this case both in the time and place. The outcry is the social cost.
cannonedhamster··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
When he was charged it was determined that despite this possible defense there was enough evidence to convict him off knowingly committing sexual assault. It's possible he'll be found not guilty in the court of law, but it's unlikely a convicted sex offender with a harem of women is above coercion and the law likely find the defendant would more likely have known than not known.
cannonedhamster··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
They were up on his website last I checked which was a week or two ago. I think that's considered recent.
cannonedhamster··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
It's always hard when people who built things you love have flaws. I remember my own reaction to hearing just how bad his behavior was. It's beyond the bounds of acceptable for anyone. Using his position to proposition women, handing it business cards to women he was interested in even in professional settings, defending pedophilia on his website as two consenting people when children can't functionally consent. Do I think he's a bad person? No. I disagree with a lot of what he's said and done and he's definitely pushed boundaries but I've never heard of him breaking boundaries, though it's highly possible. He was completely delightful when I met him in person. He's not the right person to be leading the free software movement anymore. He hasn't taken the steps required to develop the social skills needed for the role. He hasn't learned that there's a time for PR people to do the talking. He hasn't learned that there's appropriate times to not have a debate. These are all logical qualities of a leader that he doesn't have. Logically he should step back, reevaluate, and let what he's built continue to grow. It seems like he's doing that. He'll always have people willing to support him and work that he does.
cannonedhamster··on Kickstarter’s Year of Turmoil
Yeah because Comcast, EA, Verizon, and there are numerous private today constructions crews that aren't unionized and they are all known for great service. Unions have zero impact on quality or speed of work. All unions do is create a group of individuals to balance the power that corporations have. If unions had any real power in the United States, then wages wouldn't have failed to rise with the rate of efficiency for the last 50 years. Since Reagan went union busting wages have barely increased for the average worker against inflation. You know who has been getting more money? The corporate owners who have devalued all the public stocks while keeping the private stock for themselves. We don't live in a republic in the US anymore, we live in an oligarchy.

You know the single most efficient medical insurance? Medicare. Government doesn't need to be a bureaucratic mess, but when half of government is literally platformed on making government fail to prove government is broken, it's not really difficult to see why we're in the mess we're in. All I want is us to pay down our deficit instead of kicking the can down the road.

cannonedhamster··on It's time to talk about post-RMS Free Software
In every case you suggested, yes you would be charged as described, except the theft unless there was evidence you were not involved. In the first two you would go to court to prove your lack of guilt. We're talking about grown adults going to the house of a convicted sex offender finding young women who are held against their will in a harem and then having sex with them because they were told to make you happy. If you cannot understand why your defense wouldn't hold up in this case then you'll never be convinced. Stallman, a man I've met and had a very nice conversation with, holds views that literal children have the intellectual and emotional capacity to engage in sexual relationships with adults on equal footing. This is just plainly untrue. A child cannot fully understand the consequences, they aren't even fully developed yet. This is not the middle ages, this isn't the neolithic. We know the proper development is required for children to become proper adults. Stallman has repeatedly made statements and actions that are inappropriate, blatantly sexist, and has himself abused his position within the community for personal gain and satisfaction. As much as he has given to the FOSS community, it's time for him to step back as being the face, if he's not willing to do so then it's up to the community to police itself lest we all be considered supporting his positions.

You found an anti abortion doctor to agree with you. Moving the goalposts because of your beliefs. Stop trying to make definitions up when facts disagree with your political opinion.

Gab is a far right platform that moderates away anything left of Rush Limbaugh. They were upset that Reddit banned some really terrible and often times illegal acts from their platform. So they moved to their own platform. Their community is very open to fringe talk, hate speech as a form of free speech, and doxxing. A link for reference but far from the only instance.
