This is the unfinished road I was referencing.

That's actually a somewhat ingenious solution to housing tbh. You could also utilize the interior space for hydroponic farming, etc, which would create attractive greenery.

So light is an easily solvable problem as are windows. We can simulate views out windows with television screens that project the outside and the light with actual light from the outside using light tubes and bulbs. These aren't insurmountable problems. You also wouldn't have to worry about cleaning windows or breaking them, you'd have storage for vehicles already built into your top layers and you already have to move lots of dirt in building skyscrapers, but you usually can't build parks on top of skyscrapers.

The One-Minute Manager is a general book on how to appropriately manage people.

How to Win Friends and Influence People is a fantastic book on people in general.

Influence is a great book for managing up, or understanding why your people react the way that they do.

The basics for any manager are the following:

1. Know what you're solving for, know what your people are solving for. Make sure that they are in alignment.

2. Invest in your people. Time, money, etc. Not just technical skills, but soft skills. A smile and remembering someone's name go a long way.

3. Keep everything that isn't their job, out of their job. If someone is a bottleneck then there needs to be a defined point in time every week where they do documentation and/or training until they are no longer the bottleneck. Assume it will take other people longer to do the same task at first and accept it, make sure that they understand this is normal.

Edit: I'd also include this blog post in your reading: http://firstround.com/review/this-90-day-plan-turns-engineer...

Generally, any company that has high turnover or is replacing senior level jobs on a regular basis should be reviewed with suspicion. High turnover is an indicator of the work not being commensurate with the pay or a toxic environment. Lots of senior-level openings in a company that isn't brand new signifies a company with leadership problems or funding problems.

The way to respond to that is to say that time and resources are limited, he can choose which one he would like to prioritize. If he doesn't say you will pick one to work on and begin on the other afterward. If he doesn't like the one you worked on first, he should have chosen differently. You can physically only work on one thing at a time. They choose or you choose. You have the power.

If you stop feeding your milk cows and expecting higher output, eventually they stop producing at all.

Actually no, just because you kill someone doesn't mean you're going to jail. If someone is attacking you and you lash out in self-defense, you're very likely to not go to jail as everyone is expected to be able to defend themselves. It sounds very much like this was a defense mechanism to overwork. The fact that they didn't give him time off before approaching him was kind of crappy in the first place. It should never have come to what it came to.

I was a Rick once, though not by choice. The company underpaid, management received bonuses based on cutting staff, and the company wasn't a tech company. They refused to give raises or title only promotions. I tried to set up knowledge transfers, tried to spread workloads, instituted training, but it was never enough and all the work ended back with me. I eventually left and now make significantly more for less work. I've never let myself become a Rick again.
cannonedhamster··on IGN acquires Humble Bundle
Not to say anything of the customers of the acquired company. Most Humble customers are now the product and not the customer when dealing with a media conglomerate.
