cannonedhamster··on X1 Carbon 6th gen about 50% slower on Linux
You can write a script to check the CPU temps in linux and set the fans to kick on at different power levels for certain temps and just run it as a timer event. I did this for a Macbook I had Arch running on when it was running hotter than I liked.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: How much did you, as an employee, make when your startup exited?
Startup 1: $0 (company still going but options are worthless) Startup 2: $0 - options cancelled in lieu of ~$2k in bonus.
cannonedhamster··on Cloudflare Ordered to Expose YTS, Showbox, and Popcorn Time Site 'Operators'
While I agree with you in principle, they aren't required to host content that they don't want to. They certainly shouldn't be actively shutting down content, however that's not the same as declining to host content. I'm somewhat surprised that a conservative network hasn't been established to support the White Power, Alex Jones, Gab types of places. It would seem to be at the minimum a viable business for a niche audience.
cannonedhamster··on New Mexico observatory closure stemmed from FBI child porn probe
That's strangely pedestrian, though if you didn't know who was the suspect, I suppose closing down the entire place is the best course of action to prevent tampering.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: What made your favorite manager/supervisor/CEO so great?
What if I want a better home than other people? What if I don't want to eat the food that's provided to me? What if I disagree with the education system? You're trading one system of benefits and downsides for another, in your case you're trading freedom and risk for autocracy and stability. Mind you I'm well aware of the problems with Capitalism, I don't think having a good boss in the same system who can make you a better person, help you learn, etc is antagonistic to your goals of Chinese communism.
cannonedhamster··on Ask HN: What made your favorite manager/supervisor/CEO so great?
I read it much the same way, as a rather insulting thing to say, especially since you didn't go into what was said afterwards and you didn't preface the kind of relationship you had. It's not on the reader to understand what you meant, it's on the writer to write what they mean in a way that the reader understands the intent.
cannonedhamster··on FanDuel not honoring bet that would have paid over $82,000 due to line error
The difference being that the slot machine owners are not the slot machine developers and it is not within their power to do anything to prevent the errors.
cannonedhamster··on FanDuel not honoring bet that would have paid over $82,000 due to line error
It is very typical for contracts between businesses to include monetary penalties for bugs that are service or uptime impacting, so yes many other companies are required to pay for their major bugs, why not a betting company?
cannonedhamster··on FanDuel not honoring bet that would have paid over $82,000 due to line error
Yes. Fanduel should have to deal with the consequences of their results. If an individual accidentally had more of an illicit substance on them than was legally allowed, they go to jail. If you accidentally choke someone to death during consensual play, there are consequences. If Fanduel hasn't found it important enough to have checks in place for their odds, literally the most important part of their business, then there are consequences. The problem with today's society is that people in power are divorced from the consequences of their actions, while those without power tend to have the harshest version of the consequences thrown at them. How many times have copyright holders illegally made false claims with no action taken against them? The point stands if we don't have consequences for our actions, we're not a country of laws and all laws should be invalid.
cannonedhamster··on Evernote just slashed 54 jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce
Huge mismanagement. I used to be a loyal EN user. Even considered paying for the premium offering, but they just didn't price it properly for what was offered. They also went some weird directions that I didn't like, and removed features that I did like. Then they kept raising rates. They also never put in a dark mode or even themes and made constant changes to make it impossible for it to be done easily on the user side.

Edit: To be clear I'm paying for Standard Notes right now. So I'm not someone against paying for good things.

cannonedhamster··on America is pushing the labour market to its limits
American politics nowadays has little to do with anything other than cult of personality. The way we're set up exacerbates the issues as there's little incentive to work the middle of the aisle anymore where some of the best work happened. I'm a firm believer in conservative fiscal policy and liberal social policy. Good luck finding that in modern politics.
cannonedhamster··on America is pushing the labour market to its limits
Unfortunately no. You can easily not hire someone for "fit" without describing why you didn't think that they fit. You can also say a million other legal reasons for not hiring. Unless they specifically say that you were not hired because you're a momma then you've got a long, long hill to climb.
cannonedhamster··on Why should I use DuckDuckGo instead of Google?
I'm really curious about the business app you had problems with. I've yet to experience any issues with Firefox and apps since moving back to FF shortly before they moved to Quantum. I do know there are many apps that take advantage of non-standard features supported by Chrome, which could be the case here. I was finally able to completely ditch Google, though because of going back to college to finish up my degree, I'm stuck with MS for a bit longer, though I've been fairly pleased with W10, I'm a sucker for the Ubuntu subsystem.
cannonedhamster··on IBM Is Being Sued for Age Discrimination After Firing Thousands
In which case the same employees could turn around and point out that CEO pay, which is ostensibly tied to performance, is only getting higher despite any real provable impact on company performance for most of them. The problem for any company comes when it is driven more by the economics of the company than the mission of the company to product something good.
cannonedhamster··on Was ditching the headphone jack a good idea?
Can you replace the battery in your airpods? No? So you mean you're literally buying something to throw away every 5 years or so? How environmentally friendly, but I'm sure Apple is glad you've decided to make paying them a regular part of your life. Nothing about removing the headphone jacks had a point other than to increase profits. The phones are thicker, waterproof phones have headphone jacks, they parts are cheap, the next big thing isn't really a drop in replacement or better yet.
cannonedhamster··on Watch Plants Light Up When They Get Attacked
Without making a claim against veganism/vegetarianism, you do realize that people have been killing their own animals and eating them for many years. I'd wager most of the people who work in factory farms still eat meat. You don't find a huge proportion of butchers going vegetarian/vegan. I don't think that evidence supports that seeing how your food is killed has any impact on most adults, although it can be traumatic for children. The meet your meat campaign was largely ineffective, whereas making vegetarianism/veganism easy to do has shown actual upticks in vegetarianism that seem to be self fulfilling cycles. People aren't generally monsters, but that doesn't mean they want to sacrifice if they don't have to. Make a product that competes with meat on price, taste, and texture and I think most people will choose the vegetarian option unless there's significant social pressure not to.

Actually I did this as well. I learned to code in HTML and was forced to use Dreamweaver in school because it was "faster". I could use a template and code most of what I needed to by hand faster than most other students could with the tool. I also made very clean, super fast loading sites because I tried to do everything as simple as possible. On of my final projects fell through despite me building them an entire, completely custom, hand written website that was accessible, clean, and loaded super fast. I've never thought I've had a keen eye for designing new things but I've definitely got an eye for the classics and got a lot of accolades in my class for that work.
cannonedhamster··on Google is discontinuing Inbox
Google's penchant for killing products is why I moved away from them for even their stable products. I want a company to be okay with having a stable platform of boring work to build exciting things on top of and Google isn't that company. Add to that my lack of trust in Google to not spy even when it says it won't, and it was just a perfect series of events. I honestly think the phone jack removal might have been the defining moment when I decided to move to an iPhone 6S. They will pry that phone jack from my cold dead hands.

They bought Youtube and it served Ads. Calendar is part of Gmail. Groups is pretty much dead and hasn't been upgraded in years. Android and Chrome are part of Ads. Docs is probably the only new feature that they've developed, but people pay a good amount of money for it.
cannonedhamster··on GitHub banned us without notice – Is Microsoft the risk we didn’t consider?
CDNs cost money. The whole point of most businesses lately seems to be externalizing costs while providing the least amount of service that they can get paid gobs of money for. I understand that's a sound business model in a race to the bottom, but eventually you hit the bottom and the whole market losses.
cannonedhamster··on How Indian Americans Came to Run Half of All U.S. Motels
The specific term for what you're talking about is arbitrage. You're making a high wage in the city, but choosing to live in a lower cost of living area and keeping the difference. As someone who commuted hours each way for years, this absolutely works and you don't even need to be a specific ethnicity. I've worked my way up from crappy jobs cleaning up sewer damage, to a call center, then an IT dept, and now into IT management. This is possible for anyone willing to put more work than average, and who is ready when opportunity/luck/karma comes knocking at your door.
cannonedhamster··on How Indian Americans Came to Run Half of All U.S. Motels
Which completely bypasses the point that their parents had to be wealthy enough to provide for his education at a school that had computing labs at a time that they were very rare. Bill Gates and Paul Allen certainly had to work their tails off, but negating that having a wealthy parent puts you in a far higher likelihood to be successful is just silly. The average child of poor parents is not likely to have the same opportunity as those of a child of wealthy parents. It's exactly what perpetuates the cycle of wealth.
cannonedhamster··on How Indian Americans Came to Run Half of All U.S. Motels
More to the point, you can never get out of the debt you incur, no matter what you do for the rest of your life. It's not just about the debt one incurs, it's about the one providing the debt and what they expect, lifelong admiration, respect, and deference. I've had insane requests and expectations demanded by family members for really small "gifts" before. Because of that I'd say that the social interest costs are too high for many Americans to be able to accept anything.
cannonedhamster··on Probiotics labelled 'quite useless'
I heard Coconut Oil was in secret negotiations to develop Half-Life 3. In all seriousness, everyone's always looking for an easy, digestible answer, whether that be diet, politics, or information. This is why engineers and experts who understand the incredible complexities of an issue tend to make poor salespeople, when you know all the edge cases it can be hard to give a simple answer because most people are inherently good and honest. The best sales and support people tend to be those that can distill complex concepts down to meaningful summaries without losing important information.

I suspect if someone like the subreddit that will not be named got interested HN would be impossible to stop the carnage. The best parts of the internet are also the worst.
cannonedhamster··on Cigarette butts are the single greatest source of ocean trash
I agree these would be great. You make them different sizes and stackable! You might even be able to store food in your cigarette smell containers if you made them big enough. Why has no one come up with resealable airtight containers?
cannonedhamster··on New Logo and Identity for Library of Congress
Why are they screaming at me? Can we keep the signage and ditch the new logo? Was this solving an actual issue?
cannonedhamster··on Why U.S. Corporate Boards Don’t Include Workers
Tyco, Ericsson, Comcast, IBM, GE to name a few. All of these companies are rotting from the inside out and management and contractor heavy.
cannonedhamster··on Why U.S. Corporate Boards Don’t Include Workers
By that token employees who own company stock should have a place on the board.
cannonedhamster··on Why U.S. Corporate Boards Don’t Include Workers
Typically boards and executives at top companies are a very insular group. I.E. you have to know someone to be someone. Same as the mob except greedier.
