canbus··on LiquidPiston – The combustion engine reimagined
hmmm.. still uses apex seals, would need seriously small tolerances to make it work effectively. Call me skeptical but I don't see how this is really any better than the traditional wankel/rotary design
canbus··on Slide to Unlock
well this took a few years off my life
canbus··on Show HN: Honda Civic Infotainment Reverse-Engineering
i'm probably thinking a bit older. I had an "Arnova 10G2"[0] tablet back in the day which had a resistive screen!

canbus··on Show HN: Honda Civic Infotainment Reverse-Engineering
Probably a resistive type like on really old tablets running Android 4!

canbus··on Commuter Cars Tango
it's as fast, if not faster than an RS3 even. Sounds a bit dangerous?
canbus··on Mercedes EVs can go faster for $60 a month
likewise. sadly people will still buy this shite, which in turn encourages manufacturers.
canbus··on UK Threatens End-to-End Encryption
unlikely to happen, I haven't seen this government U-turn on anything yet!
canbus··on UK Threatens End-to-End Encryption
shouldn't it be "UK threatens end to end-to-end encryption"? :-D
canbus··on Show HN: Random Aerial Airport Views
That's my evening sorted!
canbus··on Not by AI
this all feels a bit dystopian...

canbus··on No Magnets, Big Power: BMW’s Fifth-Generation Electric Motor (2022)
>It's clear that the battle for magnet-less motor supremacy is only just getting started, and BMW is answering a key criticism frequently leveled against EVs: relying on rare, sometimes unethically mined materials makes EVs worse for the planet. We're truly stepping into an interesting time in electric motor development.

Right, what about the huge lithium batteries though? they're not exactly ethically sourced either...

canbus··on Ask HN: Why do cameras stop recording after 30 minutes?
$5000 DSLRs have huge APSC/Full frame sensors to try and cool... try and take a bulb mode shot on one and let me know if they let you past 30 minutes.
canbus··on I almost bought a scanner
I recently got a (35mm/APS) Canon scanner working really well with http://www.sane-project.org/ - not the same as the one mentioned in the article, but a really good collection of open source backends for old film scanners.
canbus··on IPinside: Korea’s Mandatory Spyware
IPinside sounds a bit like a really weird medical condition
canbus··on Tesla sneakily downgrades performance brakes, puts cover to hide it
I think thats known as torque vectoring - my (fwd) car uses the brakes to control torque to each wheel. it works quite well!
canbus··on A cab ride I'll never forget (1999)
beautiful story
canbus··on Repairing Your Car in Your Own Garage Is Considered Illegal in Sacramento, CA

canbus··on The factory that only builds white Toyota Land Cruisers
probably only when cold.
canbus··on The factory that only builds white Toyota Land Cruisers
i'm not 100% on this car in particular as it doesn't mention in the article, but you can run a mechanical diesel engine with absolutely nothing electrical attached to it as long as it doesn't stall (in which case, you could probably bump-start it if it's hot enough and it'd start anyway). At a guess the engine in question is a 1HZ which has mechanical fuel injection.. so yes you would be OK without the above
canbus··on The factory that only builds white Toyota Land Cruisers
Still needed by the military - I think it'd still run if an EMP bomb went off nearby, as diesels with plunger pumps etc. are entirely mechanical.
canbus··on Photography for geeks
good things to learn, even better to forget.
canbus··on Issue dialing 911 on Google Pixel 6 cell phones
This kind of thing makes me want to use a 'dumbphone' as my daily driver..

canbus··on Mark Zuckerberg confirms broad layoffs to begin at Meta
I can see why they stopped producing it, but I wish they didn't!
canbus··on Noise cameras to be trialled in England to tackle ‘boy racers’
i agree, and im not trying to undermine modern research and development on emissions, but my point is that perhaps larger cars should be discouraged as they are hugely overkill for most people's needs and exist as status symbols - if coming purely from an emissions standpoint they are terrible compared to an equivalent small car or motorbike etc yet people seem to blame 2 strokes and old cars when in reality they are not the sole cause of the problem
