canadiancreed··on More damaging evidence on open plan offices
That's assuming that you have that option. I've worked at many places where there were no private offices (outside of the owner) and working remotely was greatly discouraged. From speaking with colleges, it's more common then it should be.
canadiancreed··on Show HN: My afternoon project - a pleasant viewer for the "who is hiring?" posts

canadiancreed··on Canada Is About To Pass Sopa’s Evil Little Brother. Politely
When the SOPA fury was going on in the states, I was talking to some friends of mine saying that it'd be a great business idea to promote Canada as a technology haven, not having a patriot act or SOPA at all. Forgot that our government seems to pick up failed ideas form other places and think they're golden.
canadiancreed··on Canada Is About To Pass Sopa’s Evil Little Brother. Politely
"Canada has always had more liberal copyright laws than the US, and I expect that to continue. You don't hear about a Canadian being sued for $20 million for downloading a few songs on Limewire."

Your'e far more trusting of this current government then I. It would fit into their message on "getting tough on crime" to have more restrictions on technology, to the point of having many actions that we take for granted now being outlawed.

I get the tagging of every little thing being "the next SOPA" is diluting the message, and agree with your point, but from the current governments track record, I wouldn't trust them on this line of legislation as far as I could throw them. Especially as this isn't the first time they've tried to pass such legislation.

canadiancreed··on Canada Is About To Pass Sopa’s Evil Little Brother. Politely
Already done. Sadly as they're a non-Conservative MP, I expect it to have as much of an effect as screaming into the wind. The joys of your MP being on the wrong side of a majority.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (January 2012)
Is your company receptive to folks working remotely at all?
canadiancreed··on CarrierIQ not on Blackberry by Default
Being a Blackberry user, it's nice to have something to brag about. We may not have the fancy apps, but I'll take not being spyed on for those anyday.
canadiancreed··on How does SOPA threaten Stack Overflow?
Especially since that demographic will probably be the ones that would support candidates that support this bill. Showing what is lost, especially in the freedom area would be a big boost....assuming they want to learn that is.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who do you bank with?
Tried that advice a few months ago, but the local credit union here (and there's only one in this entire province sadly), offered no better interest to my savings account, and wanted to charge me 3-5% more interest for any existing loans and credit cards that I wanted to more over. Guess they weren't hurting for customers too badly.

As for what bank, it's one of the five in Canada. Doesnt' matter much as to the name, they're all the same here really for anyone that isn't a millionaire.

canadiancreed··on Show HN: Tubalr.com, taking advantage of all the great music content on YouTube.
Loving the similiar feature. Already found three bands that I had never heard of before that have tunes that are right up my alley. Very nice work.

One thing and I dont' know if it's possible, but is there a way to have it where if the video is flagged as no longer there, it's not returned in the results? I get about a 25% to 50% rate where the video is listed, but doesn't play.

canadiancreed··on Detroit Startup List
As someone that grew up a few hours from Toronto, I'd be confident in saying that the GTA is in the common vernacular for most folks in Southern Ontario. I agree that those outside of that area (in Canada at least) wouldn't, since from outside it looks like it's all Toronto.
canadiancreed··on Poll: How many generations removed are you from immigration?
Wow first time I've ever met anyone that wasn't within the immediate family with that last name (Slater that is) I wonder if we were also affected by that...
canadiancreed··on Poll: How many generations removed are you from immigration?
The closest that is known in my family tree would be two generations, when my fathers father came over from England around the time after WWI (exact records we never knew, since dad didnt' care about genology until it was too late, and I was three when his dad passed on). Two of the other branches have Scot last names, and we traced one back to the highlands around the early 18th century so I'd estimate that's at least ten or so generations?

On my soon-to-be wives side, she's actually an immigrant herself (from the United States to Canada), but her family has been in the mid Atlantic area of the US since the 1840's. was told it's around eight generations or so.

In fact outside of myself and her, our family trees seem to find a place, and then stay there for generations. Rarely any moving at all.

canadiancreed··on Need a warrant to unmask Internet users? Not if Canada gets its way
Probably more then it would take to have it taken down by a missile, or be made ineffective by "interference"
canadiancreed··on If We’re Turning Off Social Media, I Want News Channels Shut Down, Too
Unlike social media, would people miss the 24/7 news channels as much?
canadiancreed··on If We’re Turning Off Social Media, I Want News Channels Shut Down, Too
However the speed of the organization of "events" is reduced from near instantaneous to days or weeks. It's the speed of the message delivery system that makes it attractive, and it's most exploitable resources.
canadiancreed··on Warn HN: Lots of Launches Coming
Oliver Reed parodied for the win.
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (August 2011)
Interesting product. Do you accept folks that are looking for telecommuting opportunities?
canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Desperate Python Hacker Seeking Help and Suggestions
Make that sample of two, as I had the same experience.

granted it's a sample of two out of who knows how many, but there it is. Will still be applying again but it won't be at the top of the list sadly.

canadiancreed··on Ask HN: Desperate Python Hacker Seeking Help and Suggestions
I'd echo what SeoxyS has to say, in that companies want you in their doors, and that means heading to where they are. The market for remote workers is think to say the least, especially for folks that are not close to company headquarters (speaking from over seven months and counting of looking for exactly that).

However I'd be pessimistic about marketing your skills to shops that dont' use the tech that you have experience in. I've found with my own quest that employers are for the most part, not convinced that it's the programming knowledge, not the syntax that matters. This may be less of an issue in the hotspots though.

And yes anything manufacturing....well it's the 1930's all over again.

canadiancreed··on Poll: Android developers, what IDE do you use?
Use Eclipse Helios, mainly because my projects span multiple languages, so it just makes it easier to do one stop coding.
canadiancreed··on PHP to deprecate MySQL extension
Reminds me of some places I've worked in my time. Clients made one site and wouldn't pay for an upgrade, and the folks running the company learned PHP when version 5 was brand new, and never wanted to upgrade because of a combination of clients not willing to pay and "seeing no need to upgrade".

Most of them are amazingly still in business, and their clients sites are still amazingly vulnerable. And we wonder why PHP has such a bad rep.

canadiancreed··on Spotify vs the US Competition
Kept hearing about Spotify this week and after reading this article decided to give it a try...and found like almost everything else involving media, Canada's left out in the cold. Guess I'm sticking with grooveshark for now.
canadiancreed··on US claims all .com and .net websites are in its jurisdiction
Sounds like a good time to start selling those .com/.net domains I've got stashed away.
canadiancreed··on Dutch cookie law may lead to online exodus
That's assuming that users want to learn in the first place, and dont' tune out the moment anything remotely technical hits their ears.
canadiancreed··on CIA.gov Possibly Down, LulzSec Claims Responsibility
True, it's probably little more then a coat of paint on it's house. That being said, they're probably paying more attention to those that just threw eggs all over it, and if they chose, to act accordingly. Not like there woudl be much that would stop them.
canadiancreed··on How a 3 week business trip to the US got reduced to 3 hours
As someone that goes to the states often, and have been looking for telecommuting work, that puts a big fly in the oitment.
canadiancreed··on It’s OK to make an extra $2k per month if you’re a programmer. Here’s how.
One good reason to seek out employers that dont' have all encompassing NDA/IP restrictions as part of their hiring contracts. They're hard to find but they do exist, and they're worth their weight in gold.
canadiancreed··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
depends on where you live. Here outside of dental it's all covered. And the local CoC offers full dental/prescription coverage for a decent amount per employee.
