camillomiller··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
You’re all confirming the point by quoting niche examples of things that wouldn’t sustain a million dollar a year market, let alone contribute to a 6 trillion dollar one.

You explained the problem brilliantly. Frontier models are great at making you tinker and come up with shit you wouldn’t have done because there is zero value in it and you would have had to bet a value N (time, money) to obtain before this investors-subsidized almost-free software existed. This is deluding individuals and CEOs and everyone who seems incapable to abstract from the sycophantic personal experience into systemic thinking. To be fair, LLMs have been engineered to give this illusion, so the fault lies with the grifters controlling them.

Now are there useful applications of these tools (not gods) that might justify a sizeable new tech market? Absolutely yes! Is that market ever be going to be worth trillions a year? LOL hell no.

camillomiller··on Who Killed Paulina Borsook's Career?
You sound like this touched a nerve. Also, your argument is self defeating. If tech publications were not so dependent on tech ad money after the bubble burst, then critical writing like Borsook’s should have become more palatable and editors would have had some interest in publishing critical stuff.

I don’t think there was a conspiracy, as much as a “we don’t wanna have to do with her because she’s problematic” consensus. The outcome for her was the same.

The kernel of truth here is that the behaviors we see displayed nowadays by tech bros were always there, it’s just that at the time there was less scrutiny, and telling the underdog-changing-the-world-for-the-good-of-all tech story sold their narrative much better.

They were always after the usual triad: power, money, sex.

Why are OpenAI and its CEO not considered criminally responsible for something that in the past led to severe indictments? Please reporters, ASK THIS QUESTION OVER AND OVER. These fuckfaces are avoiding responsibility left and right but it’s THEIR systems, it’s their software. Lock them the fuck up.

Also, the Albanese govt is pretty strong on BigTech, this is a good opportunity to bring on a proper indictment.

Correct. I wanted to reference My Lai as well. This is somewhat more “who the fuck cares” than Vietnam in my perception, when you had large and strong protest movements that are nowhere to be seen in that form or cultural relevance today. This is NOT a generalization on all Americans by the way, that are in many cases lovely people that would agree with the above.

I also like what Bourdain said about Henry Kissinger and South East Asia, edit: specifically Cambodia. I was baffled when the absolute heinous bastard finally fucking died to see how many people were paying their respect to basically Satan incarnated.

Here’s Bourdain: Once you've been to Cambodia, you'll never stop wanting to beat Henry Kissinger to death with your bare hands. You will never again be able to open a newspaper and read about that treacherous, prevaricating, murderous scumbag sitting down for a nice chat with Charlie Rose or attending some black-tie affair for a new glossy magazine without choking. Witness what Henry did in Cambodia - the fruits of his genius for statesman- ship - and you will never understand why he's not sitting in the dock at The Hague next to Miloševic. While Henry continues to nibble nori rolls and remaki at A-list parties, Cambodia, the neutral nation he secretly and illegally bombed, invaded, undermined, and then threw to the dogs, is still trying to raise itself up on its one remaining leg

I tried this:

"Customer wants to lear how to better talk in a company situation, and bring across their argument effectively"

Than had it choose what training would be fitting for this user: - Communication and Feedback - Leadership for Begninners - Soft Skills and Emotional Awareness

It picked always the third with an 80% confidence, while the answer should have been 1.

I’ve been around the WP crowd enough to know countless stories that prove mm is basically a manual case of narcissistic personality disorder. The reality shifting, the constant blaming, the unsubstantiated claims… they could put his picture on the DSM5 definition of the disorder. The problem with these personalities is that they are untreatable and tend to get way worse with power/money. He is an utter and catastrophic disgrace to the whole wordpress community and the only hope is that he gets to be successfully ousted.
camillomiller··on After Math
So you decide that the reality is another view and that's settled?
camillomiller··on After Math
I invite you to consider that your doomer views on AI trampling everything in front of it humanize the technology and give it an agency that is in fact in the hands of its creators. It’s very convenient for them to make people think they have no control over their creation. It’s like Facebook claiming they’re not a publisher but on steroids
camillomiller··on After Math
I feel like, to different degrees, we’re witnessing the same effect seen in image generation or text generation. People who don’t know better about art or writing would be impressed by what gen AI can produce and will find it indistinguishable from a human-produced equivalent. This admittedly is good enough for most business endeavors that cared only about the process, and would gladly avoid the cumbersome (to them) process that leads there. But art or writing is not just about the product as much as it is about the human process itself. That is true for all creative forms, even the ones that are normalized in business. Now with the advancements of the frontier models, we’re seeing this in growingly complex fields like mathematics. It does seem to produce results, but the process is equally important. Yet we pretend to measure its ability only based on the result. It’s as if these tools grow to become better at pretending to be top of the crop in increasingly complex fields, which makes it harder and harder for people that actually have a deep grasp of those fields to explain why that’s not exactly what’s going on.

camillomiller··on Remember Hong Kong
This is bad American propaganda. I’m sorry but what Hong Kong are we talking about? And what advantages of democracy are we talking about? Unbridled inequalities fostered by a crooked ruling class with absolutely zero respect for international laws and diplomatic order? This narrative could work when the US were still disguising their true nature. Nowadays… not so much
camillomiller··on Recursion into madness
Definitely already happening with many c-suites. We unleashed Nyarlatothep…

“I do not recall distinctly when it began, but it was months ago. The general tension was horrible. To a season of political and social upheaval was added a strange and brooding apprehension of hideous physical danger; a danger widespread and all-embracing, such a danger as may be imagined only in the most terrible phantasms of the night. I recall that the people went about with pale and worried faces, and whispered warnings and prophecies which no one dared consciously repeat or acknowledge to himself that he had heard. A sense of monstrous guilt was upon the land, and out of the abysses between the stars swept chill currents that made men shiver in dark and lonely places. There was a daemoniac alteration in the sequence of the seasons—the autumn heat lingered fearsomely, and everyone felt that the world and perhaps the universe had passed from the control of known gods or forces to that of gods or forces which were unknown. And it was then that Nyarlathotep came out of Egypt”

camillomiller··on GPU World
That's not what I'm saying, and I don't know where you inferred that from. I'm saying that tech has changed the world in the way we experience it, for sure, but it has been driven by political choices, more that drive political choices itself if we look at the bigger picture.
camillomiller··on GPU World
In the limited pockets of society you experience directly. How much has changed in the relationship between the West and Asia, the economic inequalities globally, or even in the West, etc... if you look at macro, everything moves according to laws that have little to do with the even distribution of technology and a lot to do with the decision makers that get to pick how that distribution takes place.
camillomiller··on GPU World
I have been in tech for 20 years. i researched, covered, produced analysis, written extensively about innumerable trends. I have always done it with a grain of sane skepticism, but I have been wowed so many times. And yet, for the first time, I see something like this and I can’t utter anything but “oh my effing God”. It’s disturbing to me—to have this incredible technology available, the most incredible I’ve seen ever, and yet feel so empty about it. I just feel a fundamental repulsion. A generation ago the nerds were quirky cool outcasts with enough of a humanistic background, an understanding of the value of culture, or the humility of those who don’t know enough. This enabled them understand that tech is only part of a broader set of values, even though many of them were certainly technological maximalists. With AI another form of tech power has prevailed. It’s tech totalitarism, tech for tech’s sake. The drivers are of course the usual suspects: money and power. Yet there’s more. The resistance, even the most basic skeptical resistance, from the broader public isn’t there. With gen AI the nerd found the gold in the mine: the sudden realization that millions of people just couldn’t wait for the moment a machine could alleviate the curse of thinking. So here they go, merrily and joyously deferring their mind process to a mimicry engine, running back into the warm womb of Plato’s cave.

That said, interesting competition, big prizes, but the premises are pretty opinionated and quite prescriptive.
