There's a ton of different forms of documentation within Google, but mainly Google Docs or markdown.
cameronbrown··on The week old Hollywood finally died
Have people put their card details in first to minimise friction later on?
cameronbrown··on Young children would rather explore than get rewards
Well, I only left high school last year... I don't think it's impossible to at least guess this. I think I got very lucky in realising that the school's goals (push me to university) were not aligned with my own.
cameronbrown··on Report: Most Americans have no real choice in internet providers
> Seriously. I don't understand why there isn't a movement to regulate ISP's like utilities at this point. Why aren't mayors and governors running on this as a major plank?

Who do you think gave them these monopolies in the first place?

> Games will not have first class support for linux for years to come, this is not indicative of the linux platform, simply that the market is tiny and developer time is better spent on supporting platforms that are widely used.

Before EGS rolled around, Linux momentum on getting games support was amazing. Steam lets you run the vast majority of games on Linux now.

Sure, and more to the point, currencies tend to be bootstrapped by some value that backs it (gold, oil or even just faith).
cameronbrown··on Young children would rather explore than get rewards
Your university does not define you. Plenty of people go to a crap university, yet can still be the top of their field one day.

> The schooling system, with its grades, signed slips, and whatnot, is set up through extrinsic motivation to teach obedience, conformity, and smothering the intrinsic drive so necessary for the creative work we will expect from the children later in life.

As a teen, I think I would've agreed with you on this, but looking back personally, I think boundaries inspired my creativity to break out of them.

cameronbrown··on Short on Money, Cities Around the World Try Making Their Own
This seems like a horrible idea. How does nobody realize that you can't just "will" a currency into having value? A piece of paper won't produce value... At least bitcoin gains it's value from traders buying USD with BTC.

I think you touched on a great point here. Thinking a lot about this lately and I'm convinced the authority figures don't just don't understand why people have stopped trusting them. Trump's election was a perfect symptom of the problem.
cameronbrown··on Google speakers are listening to more than just voice commands
For most people they're personally investing their energy in what they consider more important issues. We all only have so much energy to go around, and this obviously comes low on GP's list. This is in the same vain as online advertising or buying food from supermarkets over local stores.
cameronbrown··on Google speakers are listening to more than just voice commands
So GP is a sociopath for choosing to use a Google Home?

cameronbrown··on Chat Bubble Blindness
The stalking thing seems hyperbolic. In my experience as both shopper and employee, many seek to have as few conversations as possible.
cameronbrown··on Introducing Instagram Reels
Anecdata for sure, but my younger aged family members (and their general age group) on TikTok are all on Instagram.

It's not about large competitors with deep pockets, but that network effects mean a shitty FB clone can be worth more than entire businesses designed around specific concepts.
cameronbrown··on Anti-climate action statements get more visibility in news coverage, study finds
Just having the mindset of "we need to validate this" isn't enough. Having the mindset of trying to disprove a theory encourages people to look in new areas. Diversity of thought is important because a monoculture stalls innovation and creativity.
cameronbrown··on The Panopticon Is Already Here
Eh?? Brexit was fiercely decried by the ruling class. The only reason the vote happened was because it threatened to break up the conservative party. Nobody expected the result we got.

The media doesn't cancel people directly but they do amplify minor Twitter outrage to a global audience and as such, part of the problem. The canonical example is entire articles being written on 1-2 tweets supporting a particular opinion, but ignores thousands of tweets with a different opinions.

cameronbrown··on The Panopticon Is Already Here
> Nobody's willing to defend them? I think you mean you can't be bothered.

I mean, I do also write to MPs and various offices. What I mean to say is it's very difficult to build a grassroots movement that opposes the establishment, Brexit being the big exception to the rule.

Anyone campaigning for say, digital rights against government surveillance could get cancelled by the media very quickly.

cameronbrown··on The Panopticon Is Already Here
These values matter, but nobody is willing to defend them. In fact, things have been getting worse for years now (e.g. cancel culture)
cameronbrown··on Nvidia is reportedly in ‘advanced talks’ to buy ARM for more than $32B
Performance per dollar, and usually more energy efficient. NVIDIA coasts on their proprietary extensions imo.
cameronbrown··on Anti-climate action statements get more visibility in news coverage, study finds
Agree in theory, but alas, not in practice. Nobody's going to get funding for disproving/attacking climate theories.
cameronbrown··on Anti-climate action statements get more visibility in news coverage, study finds
If someone in academia spent serious time and money trying to disprove climate change, they would be laughed out of their job. But this is a horrible culture because we won't learn anything by publishing the same dogma over and over.

Even if you are 100% convinced climate change is happening (as most of us are), funding people who are trying to disprove it is a necessary and useful function of science.

cameronbrown··on What if carbon removal becomes the new Big Oil?
Either way we're spending more because free work doesn't come from nowhere. Mass carbon cleaning will drive the price up on everything.
cameronbrown··on Homeland Security Was Destined to Become a Secret Police Force
On your latter point, we don't need to go to China to know about it. The fact the great firewall exists is an affront to human liberty. All other freedoms are downstream from speech.

Fully paid, but it's a FAANG so that's not necessarily surprising.
