calvin··on Django gaining or Rails waning?
Keyword search trends: "Ruby on Rails" v. "Django": http://trends.google.com/trends?q=django,+%22ruby+on+rails%2...

Update: Yes, I know it's a rough estimate, and if you can find a way to do a more refined filter on Google Trends, please share it and make us all the wiser. "Python Django" doesn't provide good results for comparison.

Update (2): Filtered out some of the noise: http://trends.google.com/trends?q=django+-restaurant,+%22rub... -- still looking for a way to exclude the musician from results

calvin··on [dead]
The number of fake/new accounts created to comment on this post is incredibly disturbing.
calvin··on Posterous releases blog themes
XSS support isn't a feature.
calvin··on Dark Stalking on Facebook
They may not want you to know. They may have had a reason for not telling you about the event (i.e. they're going to a party thrown by your ex-girlfriend). There's a number of social reasons people don't generally let people know everything they do.
calvin··on What do you hate not doing?
It's in my RSS reader and I follow him on Twitter, too.

The reason it's on HN is so we can discuss it -- it's hard to do that on his blog where the post already has 87 comments and are not threaded.

calvin··on An Angel Investor Group Move That Makes Me Vomit
I find it ironic that some of the groups he's criticizing have advertisements showing up in the Google text ads on his post.
calvin··on Sketchpad - Adobe Illustrator circa 1963
From the video: "I once asked Ivan Sutherland, 'How could you possibly have done the first interactive graphics program, the first non-procedural programming language, and the first object oriented software system in one year.' And he said, 'I didn't know it was hard.' "
calvin··on Digg.git
Summary of article: Git is awesome. It "reduce[d] the time our integration process took from days to minutes." And it scales better than SVN.
calvin··on Ask YC: Your favorite startups lately
GitHub has found its way into my workflow for web development work. Plus, the sheer number of useful projects and source code available from other developers keeps brings me back to the site frequently.
calvin··on Why Van Halen's contract calls for the removal of all brown M&Ms
RTF contract, apparently. Always a good idea.
calvin··on Different approach to engineyard contest
Chrome is doing ~1634/sec for me on an old Pentium 4.

Encourage the women/girls in your life to call the number and record some sounds and we can all benefit.
calvin··on Social Skydiving Days 18-20: Winners are Made of Fail
Without failure, there is no success.

Thanks for the insightful story and sharing your experiences. I'm hoping it provides me the fuel to take a few more risks in social settings than I typically do.

calvin··on Why you (probably) won’t be using Firefox a while from now
These statistics do not show Firefox is the most popular browser as they are specific only to W3Schools which is primarily a developer/designer-trafficked site.

The statistics above are extracted from W3Schools' log-files
I'd recommend looking at StatCounter's chart of current browser stats (for the US) as of July 2009 (found this earlier today via TechCrunch): http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser_version-US-monthly-200807...
calvin··on WordPress Plugin Developers Get The Shaft, Donations Are 0.1% Of All Downloads
While I'd love to make more money from the Wordpress plugins I've worked on, so far I've been content w/ the $10 I've received over the last two years because I did it to gain experience and have fun doing something I enjoy. Fortunately, I've been able to take that knowledge and apply it to my day job and it's paid off far more than any donations ever could have.
calvin··on Trent Reznor Quits Web 2.0, Offers Cutting Advice To Haters
My favorite line: "...the [social media] experiment seems to have yielded a result. Idiots rule."
calvin··on The Future of Facebook Usernames
From Facebook TOS Section 4.7 (5/1/2009)

You will not transfer your account to anyone without first getting our written permission.
http://www.facebook.com/terms.php

Good luck with that.

calvin··on The Future of Facebook Usernames
If by "a few minutes" you mean 35, then sure. And I'll probably be doing the same thing

I don't want it for the SEO, but if nothing else having the name is convenient for telling new "friends" how to find me on the most ubiquitous social network without having to email them a long profile URL.

calvin··on Ask HN: Simplest email setup for slicehost-ed domain?
I've used this script and it's saved me a lot of work. It reduces the time setting up DNS from 30 minutes (give or take depending on how many CNAMEs, A records, and MX records you need) to about 10 seconds.
calvin··on An open letter to Jason Calacanis
Technically, Twitter says you keep the right to your words.

If you wanted to give up the rights to your words, you could use something like tweetCC (http://tweetcc.com/) to apply a Creative Commons license to your tweets.

calvin··on An open letter to Jason Calacanis
To me, it makes good PR-sense for Mahalo to allow Twitter users to opt-out of their automatic question-scraping system.
calvin··on Why our 'amazing' science fiction future fizzled
Warning: it discusses the finale of Battlestar Galactica so I'd avoid reading it if you haven't finished watching the series yet.
calvin··on Ask HN: Marriage
You can gain quite a lot. If you want a partner beside you to learn from and grow closer to, it can be a great thing. If you want children to love and raise and educate, marriage can be awesome. Those are two reasons I look forward to marriage when I meet the right woman.

If those aren't your priorities though, then I would agree, marriage probably isn't a good option for you. If you view marriage as "what you can get" rather than "what you can give/share" then it will not work and will result in unhappiness.

calvin··on Ask HN: Marriage
Exactly. You can't write a business plan for love. It happens, or it doesn't.
calvin··on Yahoo Quietly Pulls The Plug On Geocities
GeoCities was my first site. Being given a chance to play with HTML (4.0 was still cutting edge) is what drew me into the tech world and led to the career I now have. I'm sad to see it go, but it's function has been replaced by numerous other sites and Yahoo! doesn't have any reason to keep it going/growing.
calvin··on Lord of the REPLs
I got errors testing basic "Hello World" scenarios, too.
calvin··on How to block the DiggBar
Digg did a blog post yesterday explaining all the steps they took to give the page juice to the content and not to their URL, so it shouldn't hurt the content-site's SEO (using rel=canonical, et cetera).

calvin··on Ask HN: Got rejected by YC 6-12 months ago? Where are you now?
Whether you moved forward with the idea or abandoned it, I'd love to hear some of your thoughts and reasoning (rather than a plethora of yes/no responses).

What have you learned?

calvin··on Ask HN: What Paid Services Do You Use For Your Startup?
S3 for data backups and file storage. CloudFront as a CDN. A few EC2 instances for data processing and Elastic IPs for them.
