calvano915··on FDA intends to take action against non-FDA-approved GLP-1 drugs
> I highly recommend checking out the terms of trumprx.gov - not endorsing the entire government here, but it is actually working and quite cleverly written to ensure Americans are getting the lowest cost drugs in the world now.

Brief research indicates otherwise unless you're talking about a handful of Brand name Rx. For generics, CostPlus and other options are still better pricing.

Yes, it depends on which affiliate you go through. They all manage donations differently. In Idaho prior and now Oregon, both were pretty easy to start online without any conversations needed.
calvano915··on The Beauty of Having a Pi-Hole (2024)
Using my ShieldTV, I've very much enjoyed SmartTube for ad-free YouTube viewing. It performs very well and is constantly updated when YT pushes new blocking techniques.
calvano915··on The first minute of every phone call is torture now
Huh? I've had numerous Galaxy phones since S8 and there's no issues with ads throughout the OS.
calvano915··on Ask HN: Google Search down?
I had an issue earlier today where an email forwarded to a Gmail address was not available to the recipient for an hour later. The delivery time was correct in message header but the message was delayed in displaying on their end.
calvano915··on Love Song to Costco
> That said, I do kinda miss the Amex and its automatic extended warranty

The Costco Visa also include an automatic warranty extension of 2 years beyond manufacturer.

calvano915··on Coinbase is rescinding already-accepted job offers
Perhaps this is a moment where those that would get a severance at all with a job loss acknowledge that workers rights matter, for everyone. You think that a majority of the restaurant workers during the lockdowns got severances? Perhaps it's time we separate healthcare from our workplace. If it wasn't crypto, maybe I'd be more sympathetic. Bad bets made all around in this case.
calvano915··on Workarounds to computer access in healthcare organizations (2015) [pdf]
The information would have to be transcribed to the EMR, but otherwise many practitioners use written notes to fill the gap until they can document in EMR. I've also worked in facilities where certain medical paperwork was only kept in paper form and never uploaded to EMR, which I thought was insane when it comes to the concerns you've mentioned.

> Searching through old chart notes is often a waste of time since the systems are slow and the data is frequently incomplete or irrelevant.

I believe this can change if we change the amount of patients a physician must assess and treat in a given time period. Because that would be super costly (way more physicians required on staff) Nurse Practitioners and PAs would be a more cost effective way to delve into important and relevant information that takes time to uncover.

I use notepad
calvano915··on The Problem with Slack at Scale
I thought much the same. Controlling the custody and flow of information is impossible with tens of thousands of users and pretty much no policies or significant monitoring in place.
calvano915··on Tony Fadell: The Nest Thermostat Disrupted My Life
I have the same setup but with Ecobee 3 lite instead of Lennox
calvano915··on Humanity’s broken risk perception is reversing global progress
The viability was not properly assessed in regards to externalities of the targeted tech. Climate change, security related to oil, etc was not properly priced in.
calvano915··on Deep learning on electronic medical records is doomed to fail
In cases of subjective data, you will always see variances in reporting that may be construed as misrepresentation. It's not at all easy. As "objective" as the example might seem, I'd argue the clinician has too much leeway to truly be objective. There's a whole ton of subjective data involved in every patient course of care, much more than objective in many cases.
calvano915··on Microwave ovens and their hazards
The key is to use programs for cooking rather than max power. The programs will use variable power levels to achieve more "even" cooking/reheating.
calvano915··on Man given genetically modified pig heart dies
Instead of contradiction, I believe you mean contraindication.

I'm also in agreement that cessation of alcohol and smoking are much more reasonable requirements for placement on the list than other dietary patterns that are highly individual regarding effects on overall health.

calvano915··on My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer
Remove a zero and the story becomes fiction. That's the point of pointing out the luck and privilege of their position.
calvano915··on Saying goodbye to an old friend
Latest versions of Android OS have all the features you've mentioned.
calvano915··on Fun with Red Star OS
Windows allows the user to mark a connection as limited/metered which supposedly reduces background usage of services like OneDrive and Windows Update. I'm not aware of the degree of impact and what is allowed despite the setting. There is a secondary mechanism to reduce background usage when enabling Battery Saver mode.
calvano915··on Ask HN: Why is medical software so hard to use?
Because paper record absolutely sucks to retrieve/interpret later, and billing/coding would be even more arduous from paper than it already is with EMRs.
calvano915··on Why America has a school bus driver shortage
> people who want to work

This is where there's disagreement. Is it people fed up with poor working conditions, life circumstances that prevent employment, or purposeful unwillingness to work?

I believe the first 2 categories are significant and worth fixing to identify if/how many fall into the 3rd category. Not many do in a well functioning society, IMO.

calvano915··on Oatly loses trademark battle against British farm over oat milk
Like peanut butter isn't butter. Yet I don't need to hear people complain about it whenever nut butter is brought up.
calvano915··on Google Offices to Mandate Vaccines
Vaccines that are under EUA status?
calvano915··on Google Offices to Mandate Vaccines
Individual preferences need not apply. The "smarter" mob demands you remove your mask and ignore acquired immunity and instead submit to experimental vaccines because they'll feel better about it.
calvano915··on Google Offices to Mandate Vaccines
It seems that many commentors in this thread believe that the time for questioning has passed regarding EUA vaccines with completely new mechanisms. If it goes wrong later, well don't go blaming any of them since it was all "at-will" and "your choice".
calvano915··on Evaluating necessity of Covid-19 vaccination in previously infected individuals
Obviously we can and maybe should, but at what costs in order to do so? Are there better infectious diseases to invest in and focus on instead?
calvano915··on Solar assets ‘underperforming’, modules degrading faster than expected: research
This information may encourage more purchases of their insurance product. It's a conflict that is worth stating when considering the information they're providing.
calvano915··on The media's lab leak fiasco
Because there's not a daily sh*tshow occurring in the White House any more so the media need something that bleeds to lead. There's no losing in covering the issue regardless of outcome/findings, and in the mean time ratings will benefit from the eyeballs.
