AWS sounds like a good idea until you start calculating the cost of the setup with any kind of clustering and moderate data traffic.

calmchaos··on Coronavirus Is Making Universal Basic Income Look Better
If country X introduces UBI, the prices WILL go up (it's not a question of "if" - it's guaranteed). UBI will nullify itself quickly. And if everyone gets UBI, then we are at the starting point. Anyone can start new businesses even today.

Government spending goes through the roof (due to money printing) OR they have to raise taxes ridiculously high. This will make working even less appealing and people start to downshift - until they quickly realize that they can't. If you raise taxes, many companies simply move their operations to some other country -> loss of jobs.

What's worse is that due to prices going up, the businesses become non-competitive in the global market. Why would you buy product Y from country X if the price is a lot higher than in any other country?

When the export business dies, companies start to die and people are out of jobs. It's a ripple effect that goes through the entire economy.

Then it doesn't matter how much money the government is giving you because prices are high and as jobless you are quickly dead broke.

If due to introducing UBI all other social welfare support is removed, sick and disabled people start getting homeless and dying left and right because UBI simply isn't enough for them.

The final nail to the coffin is that other nations tell country X: "We don't accept your currency anymore. Pay with something else or you don't get the goods."

Frankly I'm surprised that this hasn't already happened on larger scale - UBI or not.

calmchaos··on Coronavirus Is Making Universal Basic Income Look Better
UBI benefits are quickly nullified because prices start to go up. Inflation effects everyone - not just people with cash reserves. It just radically increases government spending and debt which eventually leads to crash of currency value.
calmchaos··on Coronavirus Is Making Universal Basic Income Look Better
How do you get all that money so that you can pay people UBI?

Either you have to raise taxes sky high or you start printing money like never before. Both are poor options.

calmchaos··on Coronavirus Is Making Universal Basic Income Look Better
If you want hyperinflation, that's the route to take. The more government is injecting money to businesses, society and people, the more expensive everything is getting.

At the same time this dilutes the wealth of people and companies who have actually saved money.

Countries need LESS socialism and government control - not more.

calmchaos··on Let's guess what Google requires in 14 days or they kill our extension
Those rejection emails are most likely sent by an AI. If you reply back and ask them to specify exactly what is wrong, you'll get the same generic email back. Ask again, and they'll send the same generic response without any details or comments written by a human. They simply can't specify the problem at all. That's how you know you are talking with an AI, not a human.

The correct way to respond to those rejection emails is to ask for a "human being" (this is the keyword that works) to review the case. Also explain in the email why there isn't anything more you can do (if you have done every possible fix already).

As a side note, when AI systems get more common, this will be a common nightmare for regular people. When an AI makes an incorrect decision regarding you, no-one can check the code why it happened because the code doesn't exist. All we may have are some weighted matrices and neural network data as bunch of numbers.

calmchaos··on How would you program a model of a universe?
If I was God, I would first create a very dense three dimensional grid in the void. Then in any point of the grid there is a gravity vector that points to a direction with the highest combined force of gravity calculated at that point. So gravity must be a three dimensional vector field.

Now, the direction and length of those vectors have to be continuously updated due to moving particles so that we can efficiently move particles arriving at any point.

The most logical explanation is that our universe updates its state at frequency that is directly linked to speed of light. This update frequency dictates the maximum distance any particle can travel in one cycle. Similarly gravity vectors cannot be updated faster than this frequency dictates. So gravity must propagate as spherical waves at the speed of light.

Similarly the system needs to continuously calculate electromagnetic field vectors for all points.

So when you place any fundamental particle in points X in the grid, it is immediately moved based on the direction and amplitude of the vectors in that point - but only by vectors that have been defined by rules to have an impact on this particular fundamental particle. We can e.g. define particles that are not effected by gravity at all.

So at very minimum we need some fundamental particles, forces and a way to calculate how those particles move in the grid. The system has an update frequency which defines the maximum speed in the grid.

Then you need to define rules what happens when two or more fundamental particles come close enough to each other.

When you have those rules and they produce an evolving system that stays in motion when fed with enough "input data", you have cracked this problem.

Solving this problem is the key to understanding theory of everything. So although the initial models aren't exactly correct, this exercise forces you to think like a God.

calmchaos··on How would you program a model of a universe?
Very cool! Thanks for sharing! I'll check that out.
calmchaos··on How would you program a model of a universe?
Good comment, thanks! It's indeed possible to approximate highly complex systems and interactions with generated models surprisingly accurately. But I'm more interested in the lowest possible level of rules and interactions.

In our current universe we are still seeking the "theory of everything" - a model that would explain physics at all levels. Currently it seems that everything breaks down at (sub)quantum level.

But I think that our universe is logical, exact and that all higher level observable interactions are based on some really simple fundamental rules. The problem is that we can't measure or detect those properly. For example Quantum Entanglement is one big issue but yet it is also based on a rule. If the rule is always enforced logically, it doesn't have to comply with the rudimentary model of physics by humans. Perhaps we are too fixed on the idea that light speed is the absolute limit to every interaction? :)

To me it seems unavoidable that the fundamental rules and basic elements of our universe have been purposefully designed. The measured standard model values even imply that those values have been calibrated to those exact values by simulation.

I also believe that our universe is not the only universe (energy in certain 3D area of the void governed by a set of distinct rules for that particular experiment) and that our universe is not the first or the last.

If "intelligence" can be born inside a computer simulation, it's also possible to have "nested universums" where simulated intelligence creates a new virtual universum inside the virtual universum where the intelligence was born in.

A related example would be that a human created AI creates a new better AI system independently and those AI systems can keep evolving and generating new stuff without any human interaction with the system.

calmchaos··on How would you program a model of a universe?
Yeah. The reason this is interesting is that although our known universe seems very complex and chaotic, on (sub)quantum level the core rules are extremely simple, always followed and there aren't that many of them.

Designing a three dimensional system is a lot harder than a simple Game of Life though.

The extension does not send your data anywhere. It only requests access to linkedin.com domain and all data stays within your browser. Nothing is sent to websites or outside your browser.

We don't collect any data and fully respect your privacy. The source code of the extension is not minified or obfuscated in any way so you can review it in your browser if you are sceptical.

Ok. Thanks a lot for this feedback. I'll try to create an example CV and take a screen shot of that.
calmchaos··on Show HN: LinCV – transform LinkedIn profile to printable CV in 5 seconds
Since I don't want to use my own data, I would have to invent an imaginary profile and fill in all the data (practically write a full CV with fake data). Haven't found the time to do that yet since I didn't think it so important. Obviously it is.
calmchaos··on Show HN: LinCV – transform LinkedIn profile to printable CV in 5 seconds
There are lots of people in the world who could get high paying jobs without any CV at all. But that doesn't mean that the CV wouldn't matter for the rest of us.

Should be now fixed for Firefox (Chrome version is pending review which can take a long time). Thanks a lot for the report. If you can retest (make sure you have 1.0.3 version so force extension update if it doesn't update automatically), it's highly appreciated.
