calini··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
I love the idea of a 'sheet' where you can add financial data and have it figure out what it needs to calculate.

I would love to see this have the ability to draw simple graphs to show how your situation will look, or allow for things like interest rates on deposits, or the ability to see how your income might look like in X years with an Y% average increase, etc.

PS: Also check: https://soulver.app/ for inspiration

calini··on Orb is a free and open source web desktop
My Synology NAS uses something like this for its navigation and even if it's initially strange, you instantly miss it when you access it from your phone, when the UI turns into this nested list which is not intuitive at all
calini··on EurKEY: The European Keyboard Layout – For Europeans, Coders and Translators
For my mixed English/Romanian/coding use, I use Romanian (Programmers), never found anything better.
calini··on Blizzard’s bringing its PC games to Steam, starting with Overwatch 2
It is quite easy with Lutris, but it would make it an even more streamlined experience

calini··on Why it’s necessary to shoot yourself in the foot
I've been doing only imperative programming in middle school (Turbo Pascal, yay), and when I started to get more curious about programming and started looking into Java, classes vs objects vs interfaces gave me headaches for weeks.

It was only when I picked up a couple of online courses like CS50 from Harvard and CS106 from Stanford (quite outtdated now) that things started to make more sense. Sometimes those things take time and looking at them from different perspectives, and even different programming languages/paradigms.

E.g. I started to appreciate the use of interfaces more when I started using Go, going from Java, where they're implemented implicitly, that I realised they're actually really useful and not just a nuisance.

Exactly, competition is good!

Both consoles get about as hot, but yeah, no good Sleep option in Windows is a shame.

Disclaimer: I ordered both a Steam Deck and an ROG Ally at the same time, and ended up returning the Ally, mostly because of the reports of the SD card reader frying up cards. If in 2 months it turns out it was all a software issue, I might rethink my option.

That being said, I think the Ally has great potential and some of the problems listed can be solved/mitigated;

> - Windows as the key interface

You can boot straight into Steam Big Picture. It will show you the desktop for a second, for now, but surely there will be solutions to make it boot almost instantaneously. And then Windows remains as your Desktop Mode.

> - very poor battery life (even worse than the Deck!)

There's a tool called Handheld Companion (FOSS) that tries to do a lot of what the right hand side menu in SteamOS does, FPS limits, power control, etc. It has a feature called AutoTDP which basically modulates power to target a certain FPS average, and it works surprisingly well, shaving off enough power to make the SD and the Ally battery comparable in situations over 9W. Below 9W I agree, the ROG Ally chip just eats more power for sometimes lower performance. It even emulates a DualShock 4 controller so you can stream PS4/PS5 games to it via Sony's app. (that also enables gyro in Steam games, which Asus didn't care much to add, even though the hardware is there)

> - no trackpads so this limits what you can ever play with it to games made for gamepads

Nothing that can be done about that, except maybe yet another Handheld Companion tweak which adds virtual gamepads on the edges of the touchscreen. Very customizable, not perfect, hard to reach with smaller hands, but hey, it's an option.

> - none of the SteamOS goodness See Handheld Companion above

PS: how do I add quotes in here?

calini··on Hackers warn University of Manchester students’ of imminent data leak
Uni of Manchester alum here. Would be fun if they had personal data on former students as well, and by that I mean me. Can't wait to find out :)
calini··on Ask HN: What other news feeds do you read besides Hacker News?

calini··on More than 600k students and teachers use Z-Library
We had a single professor in first year in a UK university ask us to buy his book, but it was £10, no biggie. The rest of the material was always available online in .pdf, or pre-printed for you to collect
calini··on Tell HN: Cancelling HP Instant Ink prevents cartridges from being used
You say that, but in the UK, or at least where I live, they started adding a £2 fee per session, on top of the 50p per black and white A4 print (which alone was more than decent). I'm not paying £2.50 for a 1-page document. I checked multiple stores and the Post Office, £2 / £2.30 I think flat fee before they even print you anything.
calini··on Tell HN: Cancelling HP Instant Ink prevents cartridges from being used
Can we actually have a discussion on here about printer manufacturers' practices, and which companies engage in this type of behaviour? If we could figure out who the companies that don't engage in this are, maybe we can change our purchasing decisions slightly and help steer the market towards less craziness.
calini··on Poll: How many logins/accounts do you have?
~600 logins in my password manager;

Err, that unordered poll is disconcerting

calini··on Ask HN: Why are there no 5G USB-C dongles for laptops?
In which case you connect it via USB, like you would with the dongle
calini··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
Oh yeah, it's great that my car has a way to install a saddle on, because if the car breaks I can easily switch back to my horse.

Carriers are the real problem here, not letting you easily switch between a physical SIM and an eSIM in case that happens. Some do, but you usually have to call up, there are delays, etc. Ideally it would be an easy switch in their web admin panel.

calini··on Show HN: Filmbox, physically accurate film emulation, now on Linux and Windows
Something like this, but for VHS (aka something better than a simple filter), would be amazing
