calebgilbert··on The dark side of open source conferences [about women being harassed]
I guess the 180-degree alternative to "women being harrassed" is the the Drupal community, in which a small, but very vocal, women run around and use 'women being harrassed' as a sledgehammer to intimidate and enforce their own standards of values/behavior on anyone and everyone.

No one seems to mourn that kind of harassment. Until they do, I remain suspect when I read titles like this. Based on experience I believe that as often as not someone just needs to call the wahmbulance and/or quit using their gender as a weapon of control.

I will add as a side note, and I have no idea if it pertains to this particular article or not, but many (even most) of the women I have seen complaining about 'being harassed' in the Drupal community are openly lesbian. I could care less about someone's personal sexual choices in the bedroom, but it does raise more questions about what is going on with many of these 'harassment' complaints, at least in my mind. There is something dishonest to me about those who have sworn their life to not-include men, also simultaneously want to tell all the men exactly how they are allowed to act/speak/think.

UPDATE: For the record I do acknowledge the very real possibly/problem of actual harassment. I do not wish my comments to diminish the seriousness of those cases. Just sharing my experience of seeing 'harassment' complaints being weaponized, and calling for some balance/sanity.

calebgilbert··on REST in peace, SOAP
SOAP is the worst thing ever!

That is all...

calebgilbert··on Website pulled on US church that wants to burn Korans [by Rackspace]
This is the second article in a week and a half that I've read about rackspace yanking a site. The other instance was even more ridiculous that this one...

Here's the link: Rely your web startup on Rackspace Cloud? Think again. http://bencheng.net/rely-your-web-startup-on-rackspace-cloud...

I'm actually a current Rackspace Cloud customer, but this type of news makes me reconsider whether I want to be.

calebgilbert··on Are we burning out on Facebook?
Guess I was ahead of the curve. Was burnt out on facebook the first time I tried it. :)
calebgilbert··on JQuery 1.4 (HTML5 Presentation)
Tried it in FF 3.6.3 and safari - no arrows, can't advance anywhere.
calebgilbert··on Why Everyone is Afraid of Apple
Gotta post this somewhere to get it off my chest, so might as well be here -

...as someone who was using OS9 when Apple had a death watch on it there's a certain amount of schadenfreude, mixed with wonder, at this situation of Apple as the 800lb gorilla. I get a giant kick out of the whole thing. :-)

That is all.

calebgilbert··on Wil Shipley on Apple's Patent Enforcement
As someone who was using macs even when there was a death watch on the entire company 1997-1999'ish I find all this wringing over patent fights to be silly. For better or worse, it's what companies do in this day and age. It's also hard for me to imagine that Steve Jobs is going to let someone do what Bill Gates did with windows in the mid 1980's (e.g., steal Apple's dominant market position by basically copying Apple's stuff and then selling it for a lower price) again without a fight.
calebgilbert··on China launches strict new Internet controls
Nutty:

"China's technology ministry moved to tighten controls on Internet use Tuesday, saying individuals who want to operate Web sites must first meet in person with regulators."

calebgilbert··on The Non-Programming Programmer
I've been programming for 3-4 years now, have memorized tons of functions and operators, across a variety of languages, and have never once needed to use the modulo operator for anything, so I personally don't place it at the top of list of priorities for what someone should know. As an employer and interviewer I'm more concerned the person has a grasp on general programming issues and the ability to problem solve than testing their knowledge of narrow subjects.
calebgilbert··on The Non-Programming Programmer
Just to state the obvious but all fizzbuzz really tests for is whether someone is familiar with the modulo operator or not. Arguably any good programmer should know about it, but I think it's not a very comprehensive check on the knowledge of any one particular individual. Suppose for instance, that the only bit of code someone has ever written was something which required them to get very familiar with the modulo operator, but virtually nothing else. They could pass fizzbuzz, but not much else.

Note: The author of the 'non-programming programmer post' saw took my comment down when I had posted it there (which is why I posted it here). Guess there's no knocking of the fizzbuzz test allowed... :p

calebgilbert··on Fire Your Relatives. Scare Your Employees. And Stop Whining.
His tough guy stance moved from being somewhat intriguing to laughable once I got to his comments about family and the subsequent admission of being married three times. The guy is not without his points, but he's definitely overstepped himself I think.

Somehow I never tire of these. :-)
