caio1982··on Meltdown and Spectre
Does anyone know the amount of dollars involved in the bounty paid by Intel?
caio1982··on Meltdown and Spectre: Bugs in modern computers leak passwords and sensitive data
I am bracing for impact...
caio1982··on Ask HN: What would be your new niche?
That is a fantastic idea. The only caveat might be you becoming a sort of startup guru full of words but lacking real experience pivoting your own career.
caio1982··on Ask HN: What would be your new niche?
...and because it is made beforehand it gets even tastier! I wanna be your costumer.
caio1982··on Ask HN: What would be your new niche?
A random guy just opened a place like that one year ago a few blocks from my house (southern Brazil, where a good barbecue/churrasco/assado is always looked for). The place seems a big success, go for it.
caio1982··on Ask HN: What would be your new niche?
Tried to bootstrap a few travel-related ideas since I do have plenty of traveling experience but it seemed the local market wasn't ripe (macro-economically), then I decided to leave IT after 15 years to professionalize the dogs and dog training knowledge my family and I already had since ever and the niche is here and all that, I have a great doggy daycare to run and local buzz etc, but man it's tough. The real world is definitely another beast than IT. I now believe and understand that IT has always been a fantasy land where we all pretend we are awesome but we are just spoiled. The non-IT reality is fucking hard, but it is amazingly rewarding in its own way. I only hope I don't ever need to go back to IT, we'll see...
caio1982··on Linux page table isolation is not needed on AMD processors
Did he know it would blow up in a few weeks? https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/12/19/intels-ceo-just-so...
caio1982··on Linux page table isolation is not needed on AMD processors
Because of the rest of the patch set. This one simply says "AMD CPUs should not be penalized [by such patch set changes]".
caio1982··on Norwegian Student Takes Secret Street Photos In The 1890s
What/where is the location of the (third) picture with two ladies and a very curvy street? That looks like an optical illusion of sort given his POV, or is the street really as curvy and as steep as that? Beautiful shot that one.
caio1982··on What Could Have Entered the Public Domain on January 1, 2018
Just a tangential comment since I've read the book and often (very carefully) recommend it: the summary you gave of it could be interpreted in contexts like "if country XYZ polluted the environment this much to get developed so can we!" and such. In Brazil this is a pretty dirty and frequent argument to favor over-industrialist policies, so when I tell people about this book I explain its title/purpose a bit more. Great book anyways, thanks for bringing it up :-)
caio1982··on Under 'Kenyan Time,' You're Expected To Arrive, Oh, Whenever
I was in Tanzania (multiple cities) for a month and honestly I did not perceive this there, would you have any example of what happened to you there? Honest question, as I found them very respectful of my time, but perhaps it had more to do with the relation I had with them (as a tourist, as compared to actually living there).
caio1982··on Hundreds of Pterosaur Eggs Found in Record-Breaking Fossil Haul
I missed that, thank you!
caio1982··on Vandals smash beehives, killing 500k bees
Not only honey bees polinate crops. In fact there are thousands of bee species around the world and particularly in Brazil, where they produce honey and the european/african honeybees are non-native as well. I think we both can agree that the Amazon and Atlantic jungles and rainforest managed to be polinated just fine without the bees you talk about. When you consider only honeybees you know in North America you are artificially restricting the problem that is much more widespread.
caio1982··on IOHIDeous OS X Local Kernel Vulnerability
Would you agree that if it were really well known and earned a fair amount to hackers people would not end up throwing this stuff online (even on Twitter) because their PR team is the only one that gets affected in these cases?
caio1982··on Vandals smash beehives, killing 500k bees
You can't possibly be comparing companies subsidized by the government and the critical natural importance of bees. This can't be real.
caio1982··on Open-source clone of the Age of Empires II engine
I did not downvote you but I suspect you might have been downvoted because you "stole" someone else's thunder so I would suggest you post your clone in a, perhaps, Show HN post.
caio1982··on A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance
I understand the promotional cost of swapping it is valid until December 2018 as per the article (though I am not a native speaker of english so perhaps I got it wrong).
caio1982··on A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance
At least now they are finally making it very clear what they were caught doing behind the curtains (from the new support page on battery performance, linked in the press release):

In cases that require more extreme forms of this power management, the user may notice effects such as:

Longer app launch times

Lower frame rates while scrolling

Backlight dimming (which can be overridden in Control Center)

Lower speaker volume by up to -3dB

Gradual frame rate reductions in some apps

During the most extreme cases, the camera flash will be disabled as visible in the camera UI

Apps refreshing in background may require reloading upon launch

Many key areas are not impacted by this power management feature. Some of these include:

Cellular call quality and networking throughput performance

Captured photo and video quality

GPS performance

Location accuracy

Sensors like gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer

Apple Pay

caio1982··on One-on-one meetings are underrated, whereas group meetings waste time
Unfortunately, human communication is hard. I mean, the tools for the job are great but the operators are shit. Meetings are a way to solve quirks in the communication pipeline and fix holes in it, it's the exaggerated desire to always have a meeting for whatever reason (possibly to show off power through control or decision-making) at whatever time that is wasteful and that's what people hate.
caio1982··on Jakarta Is Sinking So Fast, It Could End Up Underwater
By my own experience (19 countries, all continents) the poorer the society the closer relationships can get, and friendlier, in a heartbeat, as if social sympathy and being dependable is more important than being up on your own, because someday you may need some sort of help/assistance and cooperation pays off in the long term. In richer areas (even inside "poor" countries) this is exactly the opposite; people seem generally more independent in all regards so they come across as not that nice or as friendly as they could be.
caio1982··on Nike’s Two Hour Marathon Attempt
Thankfully there are scientific data to prove you wrong. You just need to leave your prejudice and bubble behind, and we're talking about running mechanics here not Nike's competitors producing minimalist shoe wear. They you can have doubt about.
caio1982··on Facebook Will Introduce Ads as Videos Start, a Move Long Resisted
For others who may think this is not a big deal I recommend searching about Facebook videos and monetization issues on YouTube. It's like a widespread money disease making creators lives miserable trying to stop it.
caio1982··on Apple’s iMac Pro is a love letter to developers
At 5k dollars (plus taxes!) this must be the most expensive love letter ever written.
caio1982··on Launch HN: Mirror (YC W17) – turn a selfie into emoji that look like you
I have a nice lumberjack-kind-of-beard and my avatar showed up with a designer chinstrap and glossy lips...
caio1982··on HP laptops found to have hidden keylogger
It still is a keylogger in a consumer product.
caio1982··on The Big Vitamin D Mistake
I live in southern Brazil (one of these tropical countries), where sunlight is not that easy to get; also people dress up and cover themselves much more than in other regions due to not only the weather but also for cultural reasons. In fact, the city where I live (Curitiba) has a huge portion of people who need vitamin D supplements, to the point this deficiency became folkloric. I was quite "happy" to learn last year that after a full decade here my blood exam showed for the first time in 35 years that now I need vitamin D supplements too.
caio1982··on Portugal’s radical drug policy is working. Why hasn’t the world copied it?
Saying progress in the UN is held up by Iran and such sounds nonsense to me. The US is also pretty conservative and has way more influence and power inside their buildings.
caio1982··on YouTube terminates largest Climate Science channel in the World
What a shitty website, it does load without any warnings but it is a fully blank page with zero texts or images... then after a while you realize you need to disable any ad blocking extension for this one to load for real.
caio1982··on Australian uses snack bags as Faraday cage to block tracking by employer
I've watched it 20 years ago so I don't remember seeing such scene. I do remember Gene Hackman explaining about cages when his hideout is shown though.
caio1982··on Why Did ProtonMail Vanish from Google Search Results? (2016)
Where did you read I proposed any scheme at all, dude? Saying something looks like a PR shield is a problem now?
