cachius··on Rapid warming may tip AMOC at 2°C, slower warming may avert collapse
The year predicted for the glacier's collapse was an extrapolation based on data and models available at the time. While the timing was off, the thing is going away visibly for everyone!

In hindsight they shouldn't have set the date, but contrast the fast decline with the long existence. Maybe even let people guess or bet the exact year to involve them and make them think.

Sure. If one path leads to certain doom and the other into the unknown, which one do you choose?

About Wolf Tivy's idea of "xenohumanism": strip "humanity" of all ape-ish historical contingency and identify the convergent "true man" as sum of "human" capabilities like language, philosophy, sociality, intelligence, consciousness

Just posted the idea for a win-win reuse of desalination waste water in the arctic depths in a sibling comment! https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49283840#49286264

Not. so. fast.

cachius··on Rapid warming may tip AMOC at 2°C, slower warming may avert collapse
Can't we just pour the waste water from desalination plants into the arctic abyss to keep AMOC going?

cachius··on Mushroom behind 'tiny people' hallucinations identified
Right, and I think now I understand you better:

>> targeted humans

With utilitarian and anthropocentric world view you mean the 'target thinking' ascribing intention to nature, and not what is targeted, which are only incidentally humans here.

cachius··on Mushroom behind 'tiny people' hallucinations identified
Why would a random thing in the world specifically target anything? Nature throws things against the wall and keeps what sticks.

Look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedychrum_rutilans, a parasite on a parasite. Did it target beewolves specifically? And now its hosts are dying, was it his fault he chose the 'wrong' target?

Not the anthropocentricity is to criticise, but the idea of nature targeting. OP asked a well meaning question where sth. can be be learned from. Thank you.

cachius··on Could psilocybin be the key to treating anorexia?
TIL I learned about Janus words that have two opposite meanings depending on context, also known as contronyms or auto-antonyms:

Cleave: To split apart ('cleave the wood') or to adhere closely ('cleave to one's principles')

Sanction: To give official permission/approval or to impose a penalty/ban

Oversight: Watchful supervision or an unintentional mistake/omission

Dust: To remove fine particles ('dust the shelf') or to sprinkle them on ('dust the cake with sugar')

Bolt: To secure firmly in place or to run away suddenly

Clip: To fasten together ('clip the papers') or to cut off ('clip the coupon')

Fast: Moving quickly or fixed firmly in place ('stuck fast')

Left: Departed (verb) or remaining (adjective)

Screen: To display/show ('screen a movie') or to hide/conceal

Weather: To withstand or endure ('weather the storm') or to wear away/deteriorate over time

Peruse: To read carefully and thoroughly or to skim casually

Trim: To decorate/adorn ('trim the tree') or to cut away excess ('trim the hedges')

Rent: To pay for the use of something or to receive payment for allowing someone to use something

Table: In British English, to propose for discussion; in American English, to postpone or remove from discussion

cachius··on Could psilocybin be the key to treating anorexia?
Funny how 'drug' in English is a homonym for at the same time bad recreational substance and good one to cure illness.

In German it's Droge and Medikament

We hear a lot about LLMs lately, they solve reasoning, mimic empathy, and awaken consciousness miraculously. As long as we do not understand the workings of the mind and brain, it reminds me of the days when machine learning or Bitcoin were the cure for everything.

The Beast of Heaven by Victor Kelleher is very relevant to current affairs. Two AIs guard a nuclear weapon in endless discussions, drawing heavily from Milton's Paradise Lost and the bible.

> "Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake. "Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills."
cachius··on Ask HN: What are the viable alternatives to DuckDuckGo?
The name collision with the browser is a bit unfortunate. If you set it to default search engine in Chrome on mobile, 'Search with Brave' is very ambiguous!
