byefruit··on Intel and ARM Performance Characteristics for S3 Compatible Object Storage
My money would be on greater memory bandwidth and probably better use of that bandwidth.

If you look at the big graph later on in the article, even for similar _physical_ core counts the Graviton does better than the Skylake - this implies there's another bottleneck.

It's worth pointing out as well that ARM's weaker memory model gives it many more opportunities for aggressive optimisations that can make better use of the available bandwidth.

byefruit··on Ask HN: I've saved up $80k USD. What should I do with it?
This might already be you but if not it gives some useful advice for your situation: https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/geeq4t/i_h...
byefruit··on Facebook Reports First Quarter 2020 Results
Their effective tax rate is only half what it was the previous year. Any ideas what changed?
byefruit··on Google Meet premium video conferencing is now free for everyone
Are you both in the US?

It could be another "free for everyone" where everyone means "US only for now". Pretty frustrating when that happens.

byefruit··on DigitalOcean VPC
Yes, you're reading the object storage traffic section.

The servers themselves come with unlimited transfer.

byefruit··on Stripe raises $600M at nearly $36B valuation
Not affiliated with TransferWise in any way but just want to say that this is totally the opposite of my experience and that of pretty much everyone I know who uses TransferWise.

We've moved hundreds of thousands of dollars through them over the last couple of years with no problems on their end (we've had problems with banks failing to transfer correctly though..)

byefruit··on Moonjit – Fork of LuaJIT to Continue Development
Still amazes me that Mike Pall was a pseudonym. I'd really love to understand what they do for a day job.

Luajit is a brilliant project.

byefruit··on Brexit: Conservatives winning majority in UK parliament
As a Brit this is utterly heartbreaking. The Conservatives tried every trick in the book in the last parliament and fought a dirty campaign that has set an awful precedent for future politics in the UK.

That remain-backing and second-ref parties actually got the majority of votes makes it even worse. First past the post is not fit for a modern democracy.

byefruit··on Microsoft Japan’s 3-day weekend boosts worker productivity
The similarity is that there's a discontinuity which discourages you from increasing your gross pay because your net pay will be reduced.

That a single £100k salary is enough to maintain a household of two kids is neither here nor there (and also depends very much on where you live).

byefruit··on Microsoft Japan’s 3-day weekend boosts worker productivity
Not as dumb and not something that catches everyone but a similar problem in the UK is free childcare.

22 hours of free childcare a week is worth ~£9k a year post-tax. If either you or your partner earn a penny over £100k then you're no longer eligible for any of your children. So with two kids in nursery a penny pay rise might lead to a £30k pre-tax pay cut.

byefruit··on NUMA Siloing in the FreeBSD Network Stack [pdf]
I assumed these were cache servers that went into ISPs, does anyone know what they mean by "Increases AWS cloud management overhead" on a couple of the slides?
byefruit··on RISC Is Unscalable
This is relatively misinformed piece of writing.

There is little to no reason why high performance RISC-V implementations can not achieve performance comparable to modern "CISC" cores.

As other commenters have said, VLIW doesn't suddenly make the problem go away and no amount of compiler magic is going to fix the fundamental issue that memory access on a modern processor is highly non-uniform and scheduling is not something that can be done statically ahead of time.

RISC-V is designed to be extended with complex instructions and accelerators and that's the scalable part.

byefruit··on A simulation of the insurance industry: The problem of risk model homogeneity
No model is going to be perfect and given that, you want errors that models make to be as uncorrelated as possible.

In the extreme case, if all firms use a single model that underestimates the risk of an event then that event occurring poses a threat to the entire industry.

With more models, each making different errors, only parts of the industry are exposed to each error. The more models, the smaller the number of affected firms and with reinsurance between firms the risk to the whole industry is much smaller.

byefruit··on Facebook launches PyTorch 1.0
Little concerning that AMD is not one of the new partners, we really need good competition on the Deep Learning GPU front to push Nvidia.
byefruit··on Tensor Compilers: Comparing PlaidML, Tensor Comprehensions, and TVM
These guys need to be clearer they're the developers of PlaidML - I don't think it's made very obvious.

Worth pointing out for anyone else that it seems PlaidML is AGPL licensed - so maybe not worth getting too excited about if you have any commercial applications in mind.

byefruit··on Backblaze Announces B2 Compute Partnerships
What kind of performance are people seeing against B2?

I wonder how realistic running analytics over stored data is.

byefruit··on Rental car companies have been waging a quiet legislative war against start-ups
There are other companies (like https://www.carhireexcess.co.uk/) who will insure against that £1000 excess for very little money.
byefruit··on Why Searching Through 500M Pwned Passwords Is So Quick
https://www.hetzner.com/cloud has 16GB for $20

https://www.scaleway.com/pricing/ has 16GB just over $20

byefruit··on Why Searching Through 500M Pwned Passwords Is So Quick
Not to mention that the dataset is relatively small.

A 16GB of ram server could basically serve responses sub-millisecond at line rate for like $25/month.

byefruit··on Dtrace for Linux
With regards to tracing eBPF has actually moved at a fairly brisk pace the last year or two and it will probably take a while for the documentation and knowledge to permeate.

The usability side you mention is what Brendan's suggesting is worth porting from DTrace, just the front-end that the users sees. That would just back onto eBPF and the user would know little different.

byefruit··on Microsoft leak reveals new Windows 10 Workstation edition for power users
Exactly as you've said, Apple's prices are comparable with their direct competitors for similar specifications but they just don't provide a low end.

If your needs are met by the low end, you're forced to pay a premium.

byefruit··on Microsoft leak reveals new Windows 10 Workstation edition for power users
Not sure I agree on the cell phones at all. I have plenty of relatives who are very satisfied with their Moto Gs and for whom the alternative would have been an iPhone at 3x the price.

If you want equivalent specs then sure, the prices are going to be similar but that's the whole point, with Android (and a PC) you've got a wide range of _choices_ on many parts of the specifications/price spectrum. With Apple you've got far fewer.

The same goes for laptops where you listed three different manufacturers.

byefruit··on Microsoft leak reveals new Windows 10 Workstation edition for power users
Indeed and I'm in a similar position the parent poster.

However, OS X gets excluded because it immediately constrains my hardware purchases.

Speaking of cheap object storage, has anyone had any experiences with OVH's Object Storage?

https://www.ovh.com/us/public-cloud/storage/object-storage/

It seems to be more expensive for storage but nearly half the cost for transfer.

byefruit··on Scotland to seek second independence referendum
What a legacy Cameron has left.

Alienation of our nearest neighbours and the likely dissolution of the Union.

It's also looking likely that Brexit will cause problems for the Northern Ireland peace arrangement.

byefruit··on Razer targets perfect Linux support
Just wanted to say that I'm looking to an existing ultraportable and hearing stories about how poor Razer's quality control and customer service is (from /r/razer and from friends) means I won't be buying a Razer Blade Stealth.

It's a real shame, it fits the bill perfectly but Dell will almost certainly get my money for an XPS 13 instead.

byefruit··on Ask HN: Alternatives to AWS?
Unfortunately my experiences with Azure so far have been pretty awful.

We have a large amount of free Azure credit and yet our experiences at actually trying to use the platform have been met with frustration.

When we tried about six months back, there were two different administration webapps that both offered different subsets of functionality. The IaaS offering seemed to still be tied very much in to the PaaS offers.

After a few hours of frustration I managed to spin up 8 instances where only 6 had connectivity with each other. I gave up the other 2 instances for lost.

When I finally got Spark running on the remaining 6 instances, local disk IO turned out to be a joke.

I gave up at that point.

Anyone have more recent experiences?

byefruit··on Overview of Running an Online Game for 3 Years
What makes this comparison even more crazy is that those AWS prices don't include any (very expensive) bandwidth or block devices.

Also, once you're paying upfront for reserved instances you've lost one of the major advantages in your cashflow scaling with your usage.
