byandyphillips··on Amazon destroying millions of items of unsold stock in one of its UK warehouses
I don't think this is a good argument that just because x industry does this that it's ok another y industry does it to justify it.
byandyphillips··on [dead]
This person should never be allowed on hacker news because of the disgusting sexist tweets he's sent over the last few days:

byandyphillips··on Save money and buy stuff in a new way with koBuy
I love this idea - I want to get the new Valve Index, but can't justify buying it all myself and then letting it sit on the shelf 90% of the time.
byandyphillips··on Ask HN: Who Is Seeking a Cofounder?
Me - looking for a new project to dig into. http://andyphil.com/
byandyphillips··on Ask HN: How to Be Smarter (In Conversation)
Oh wow this sounds like me — here's what I do and my 2 cents:

PLAN 1) Before the event, think of interesting questions and topics you can talk about

2) Remember as much as you can to let the person know you were listening and engaged

DURING 1) Listen more than you talk - ask the other person about their interests and hobbies (bonus if it's interesting to you too)

2) Don't try to be someone you're not - being your authentic / weird / quirky / self is better than trying to act like someone you're not

3) Admit that you're an introvert (assuming you are like me) - then people will be more accepting if you're more quiet than everyone else.

Good luck!

byandyphillips··on Kroger to stop accepting Visa credit cards at more of its stores
Really bold move, good for Kroger. However, I wish they had a substitute in place - like they started accepting Venmo, PayPal, or build their own "Bill me Later".

byandyphillips··on Ask HN: Where am I going wrong?
Team up with a good ux designer so that you can wireframe/prototype your idea before you spend any development time. I'd love to help - www.andyphil.com
byandyphillips··on Why Design Thinking Works
Sorry, but you completely missed the mark on this one. Are you in UX or have you led design thinking sessions? It's successful because the product stops being something the designer created and starts being a product the whole team created. It gives everyone, no matter your role, a voice in the product and the creativity to build what you think the product should be.
byandyphillips··on Why Are Some People More Creative Than Others?
UX Designer here. It took me a long time, almost 4 years of college, to train my creative muscle. Most people don't wake up one day and are instantly creative, it takes hard work and dedication just like any other skill.
byandyphillips··on The web is dying, but mesh networks could save it

byandyphillips··on Millennials flocking to 10 US cities to get a job, buy a home, and start a life
Columbus, Ohio (#8 on the list) native here working in User Experience Design making an average tech salary. At the end of every month I'm always amazed at how much I can put in savings and travel because of the low cost of living. I live downtown and my rent is only $750. There also seems to be high demand for jobs, but not enough talent to fill those jobs.
byandyphillips··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
I made a simple website that lets you send compliments to your friends (no negativity allowed) http://www.letskudos.com
byandyphillips··on Ask HN: Advice for first-time angel investing
Same advice as the stock market. Don't put in what you can't lose, hold on to it as long as possible, and understand all the rules and what you're getting. Also talk to a lawyer to draw up a contact. Best of luck!
byandyphillips··on WebVR Experiments
thanks for painting that scenario - that would be really cool.
byandyphillips··on WebVR Experiments
I'm excited for the day that I can put on VR through my phone or computer and shop Amazon with hand gestures and voice. Or look through all the pictures and videos I have stored and fly through memories.

I know we're still a far way away, but this is definitely a step in the right direction - great job Google!

byandyphillips··on How to Become a UX Designer
No matter what tool you use for UX Design, just remember it's not the application knowledge - it's your thinking, reasoning, decision making, and attention to detail that makes a great UX Designer.

Axure RP is my favorite application for wireframing, prototyping, and documenting UX decisions.

byandyphillips··on Steve Wozniak has warned about killing off the headphone jack in the iPhone 7
It's 2016 - let's simplify and push headphone makers to innovate and stop making headphones with cord. I'm really going to enjoy this change.
byandyphillips··on Ask HN: Anyone here use a Hackintosh as one of their main machines?
Yeah I'm obsessed with my dual boot Windows 10 / Yosemite hackintosh. As others have said, it requires the right components and time, but the reward in the end pays off. I'd recommend it!
byandyphillips··on Ask HN: What's the best investment you've made?
Using my own money to attend conferences when my company didn't have a budget. I think spending money on your education/self improvement is the best thing you can invest in.
byandyphillips··on Ask HN: What was your “why didn't I start doing this sooner” moment?
Getting all the junk out of my apartment.

Simplifying.

Getting a housekeeper to save time and do all the things I didn't want to.

Although it failed, letskudos.com was born.

byandyphillips··on Pokémon Go data usage draws attention of House Energy and Commerce Committee [pdf]
The real question is, why aren't the mobile carriers giving us more data? 5GB per month seems unreasonable for a $100 mobile plan.
byandyphillips··on Ask HN: Why don't progress bars ever work properly?
But isn't there a way you can trick the visual of the progress bar to be smooth and consistent instead of jumping around or is this an impossible development task?
byandyphillips··on The Free Internet Project
Sorry if this is off topic, but I wonder how many people typically donate when they see a "donate" button on a website. I imagine it's very small if any at all. Am I wrong?
byandyphillips··on Shoes By Jews launching today (yes we're real)
yeah agreed, they should disable autoplay for a better user experience.
byandyphillips··on Shoes By Jews launching today (yes we're real)
I love this idea and might get a pair by midnight tonight. I just wonder if you get addicted to 2-3 more inches and you can't buy another pair of shoes again.
byandyphillips··on Amazon Local Register
Did a 14 year old design this page? I thought Amazon had talented people working for them.

byandyphillips··on Rebuilding a simplified Firefox logo
"Simplifying a style doesn’t always mean bringing it down to basic geometric shapes and solid colors."

Cough... cough... iOS7
