bwv848··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
As a classical listener, I never really prefer streaming services. Each classical piece is usually dense and requires multiple passes to memorize and process. While one of the fun parts is comparing different interpretations by different musicians, we usually eventually settle on one or a few versions, like some folks, me included, prefer Furtwängler for anything Germanic, despite his recordings are more than 74 years old (albeit remastered multiple times). The only new recording I listened this year is Chris Thile's well anticipated Bach Sonatas & Partitas Vol. 2.

bwv848··on Apple Watch Series 12
I don't even know what you're trying to argue. Despite tons of people buying outdoor watches, these people are minorities, so Apple shouldn't prioritize them? An $800 watch that does what an entry level watch is capable of is considered a technological feat? Apple just shouldn't put a bigger battery in normal Apple Watches, and people who want longer battery life should just spend twice as much to get an Ultra?
bwv848··on Apple Watch Series 12
Marathons and 20 mile trail races are not remotely long. A thru hiking day is usually about as long as the available daylight hours, so 16 hours in summer. A 100K race typically falls in the 10 to 20 hour range, depending on the terrain and the personal fitness. A 100 miler is usually over 30 hours for sub elites. An entry level Coros watch can handle all of these, there is no need to bring up premium priced Garmins, and certainly not much justification for the Apple Watch Ultra.
bwv848··on Apple Watch Series 12
Meanwhile Coros Pace 4, a 200 dollar watch, has 40 hours of GPS tracking and offline map. I simply can not understand the pricing strategy of Apple. Do they really expect people who are serious about endurance sports and training to get their ridiculously expensive Ultra? Or they are just fine with Garmin taking the biggest chunk of this market?

> has stronger social harmony

Man unless you have different definition of so called social harmony, you can't be more wrong. Literally everyone is talking about 社会戾气 on Chinese social media and there are a big bunch of people seeking extreme means.

> Meanwhile, in China vandals and other disruptive people do get traced back to where they live and apprehended.

Nope. You think Chinese police force have unlimited amount manpower? We say the first lesson young people learn upon entering society is calling the police, 报警是社会第一课.

I don’t understand why folks mention AC games first when this kind of thing is brought up, KCD is not perfect but much better for historical accuracy.
bwv848··on Qian Xuesen: The missile genius America lost and China gained (2025)
Wrong. Mao didn’t have full control at the time. Before the Lushan Conference in 1959, China had a system of collective leadership, and Mao more or less respected it. Mao was always insane, even before the Seven Thousand Cadres Conference and the Cultural Revolution, but Qian was definitely not under pressure, he simply enjoyed his alliance with Mao so much that his last words were: ‘毛泽东思想活着,中国就永远年轻’ (‘As long as Maoism lives, China will remain forever young.’)
bwv848··on Qian Xuesen: The missile genius America lost and China gained (2025)
Qian gave a talk about agriculture at the 6th Supreme State Conference in 1956, Mao directly talked to Qian about his article in 1958 '你在青年报上写的那篇文章我看了,陆定一同志很热心,到处帮你介绍。你在那个时候敢于说四万斤的数字,不错啊。你是学力学的,学力学而谈农业,你又是个农学家。', while later Qian admitted it was theoretically only and he miscalculated, he probably did it out of modesty and he didn't say shit about his impact on tens of millions of death whatsoever. In fact, Mao's secretary at the time was Li Rui, who was a pragmatist and quite liberal during his lifetime. He questioned Mao's sanity, and Mao just blamed Qian.
bwv848··on Qian Xuesen: The missile genius America lost and China gained (2025)
Also fun fact, he advised Mao on agriculture during the Great Leap Forward, using rough estimates of photosynthetic efficiency to calculate potential crop yields. Those estimates were far removed from reality and indirectly contributed to the Great Chinese Famine, while other countries were benefiting from the success of the Green Revolution.

What argument? It was just contradiction, he didn't care how much evidences and points I brought. 3 months of trauma and depression and it is just merely irk in his eyes. It was just an unfunny, callous version monty python's sketch.

God I wish I could just block you. So called inconveniences in the name of so called massive public health emergency? First of all it was the Omicron variant, we knew its mortality rate is low, second it did spread to the rest of the country by the end of 2022 and killed millions of people, so what was the fucking point? If you have to downplay all suffering by calling them inconveniences, I guess there's no one could convince you anyway, you better hope it doesn't happen to you.

Tell it to the people in Wuhan, and Shanghai, Urumqi, and other cities that had lockdowns. I was in Shanghai in 2022, I was confined to my apartment for nearly 3 months, you couldn't be more wrong.

- Control goes beyond politics

state corporation monopoly, 党支部 in private sector, crackdowns on NGOs and charities.

- A single, all-encompassing ideology

Party led, mandarin speaking Han Chinese nationalism, blended with Little Pink's unquestionable support for Xi and the party.

- No meaningful private sphere

社区网格员

- Mass mobilization and propaganda

We saw mobilizations on Chinese social media, attacking celebrities who don't openly say anything the party wants them to say. Mobilization in real life is rare though, cos it had shown it can backfire.

- Extensive surveillance and repression

Do I really need to explain this?

bwv848··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
You can’t really deduce THAAD was used against drones based on this. As the number of US assets in the Middle East increases, it is logical to deploy more THAAD to protect them from Iranian ballistic missiles. Israel intercepted a few[0] at the beginning of the current conflict, so it is common sense to presume there are still some remaining.

bwv848··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
I did a quick search and could only found a missed missile having self destruction. Shaheds have a very distinct noise it shouldn't be too hard to id. While I don't doubt Americans had used patriot on drones, I believe it is because they were(and still are) unprepared and they panicked.
bwv848··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
Dude, the geolocation and sources are all in the comment. CENTCOM posted this picture, you’re better off spending your effort questioning them.
bwv848··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
Gee, you guys really couldn’t infer what the picture means and had to rely on words? The B-52 is a high-altitude aircraft, a truck-mounted SAM couldn’t hit it, you’d need at least something like a Pantsir(Buk is more realistic, but Pantsir had hit airliner). It implies the US has combat air patrol in the area, ready to conduct SEAD/DEAD while B52 dumps its short range JDAM.
bwv848··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
GBU-38 JDAM has very short range.
