As a kid, I remember blackouts in New York City, and we had to sleep with wash clothes on our head, which was kind of impossible, and we would all make our way downstairs, and our parents would be hanging around outside cause it was cooler than in the house.
Sorry that you had family members that were affected by this.
But, no it doesn't seem scary. The fires are caused by poor forest management (talked about in another thread this week). But, I am in South Carolina, and this week it is in the 90's like just about every week in August ever down here. And actually, this summer, we have gotten a ton of rain, more so than I can remember. But, it's been hot like it always is in the summer in the south, I can't say I ever walked out my door this month and been scared about it.
Anecdotally, my sister's kid just got diagnosed with it. He is not overweight whatsoever, but they put frickin' ketchup on everything. But, yea the majority might be overweight, but anyone that eats just carbs could get it.
I wouldn't call myself a denier. But a hot July doesn't sound that scary. Next thing that will happen is February will be the coldest month ever recorded, and then people will really lose their shit.
Old school gaming is just so great. Jelly Boy just got released on the Switch for Super Nintendo Online. I seriously can't believe that up until like 3 days ago, I had no idea this game existed. My get woken up every morning now by my 4 year old to play it. We go around the house saying JELLY BOYYYY, and fist punching through our t-shirts to make it look like the game. Just so fun to have those little flashes of when games where just quirky and fun.
I have said this on other threads. But, I really miss nothing by having a flip phone for the last 1.5 years. Because I work in front of a computer, not having a computer in my pocket is amazing. If I am away from the computer, I am away from the internet and scrolling through stuff. I can understand how people might feel like they would miss things, but I have never once been like, oh I really wish I had "X" app right now.
I wouldn't say none. But I'm with you. I am back to CD's and vinyl for music, flip phone for communication, I drive cars from the early 2000's, we keep our wifi off at the house almost all the time. It is on one hand a shame that tech has become so soured, but on the other hand, the ability to pick and choose technology from any era, and be content with it because of the fact that newer technology is not better, and in some ways is way worse because it is intrusive.
On the other points about slippery slopes, we don't even know the full extent of how the powers that be are surveilling us, it could quite possibly be 100x worse than we even realize. Certain cities, like Santa Monica, CA for instance, are almost completely under camera control. I have seen the camera room at the promenade mall, and the camera stations near some of the intersections. The illusion of privacy is evaporating before our eyes.
I drive a 2004 Lexus LS 430 and I just purchased a 2008 Ford F150 XL. I also use a flip phone, and listen to music on vinyl and my 5 disc CD changer. The more I have gone into the deep end on tech from a career standpoint, the more I crave the simple things. Or at least a simpler way to live my life that doesn't involve a screen.
I left the city last year due to the lockdowns. One benefit is I now have a woodshop in my garage again. I have built a grandfather clock, china cabinet, and some other really cool stuff about 20 years ago. Just got my workbench built and am about to start some more fine woodworking. It is feeling like I have come full circle in life.
I plucked them from Google. As of this morning it says there are 4.26 Million deaths, and 7.9 billion people on earth. My equation as done with 4.25 and 7.8, but same difference. Locked down areas faired about the same as stringent areas. In my opinion wearing a cloth mask does nothing except make the person wearing it feel some level of control about the virus. But as they say, viruses will do what they do.
My cousin and I stayed up almost all night as kids recreating the ESPN SportsCenter opening on this game on a hot summer night in Staten Island. Da da da, da da da - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyBbi7tnL5w
I was on the west side. Yea, there were a few tents on 3rd street in Venice, but I used to play golf at Penmar for like the least 8 years, and there were never tents there, and in the past couple years it became about 1.5 miles of tents along holes 1 and 3. It has just grown leaps and bounds.
These tent camps are quite new in the US. About 5 years ago, there started to be a tent camp in Seattle, but when I moved to LA there was not tents anywhere (except maybe a few on Skid Row), flash forward to about 2 years ago, and there are now literally miles and miles of tent camps all over Los Angeles. It is one of those things that once it is allowed at all, it quickly becomes overwhelming.
This is a really interesting point. And I felt the same exact way, but over the past few weeks, there seems to be more and more people on HN that are against all this government overreach. So, I personally, am starting to feel better that there are many more that feel like I do than I thought.
Glad I left LA last September. I can't believe NYC is going even more extreme than there, but they are. The good news, is my home purchase down here in Charleston is up 10% in only 3 months. This ridiculousness in CCP NYC will only help ensure my home price goes through the roof. So, yes, if you want to live in a place that respects your right to choose what you do with your body and your life, come on down south. Just don't bring your bad policies down here with you is all the locals ask :)
Yea, I mean the problem is. If you have a function that expects a number parameter. In Typescript, the compiler won't let you do this someFunction('a'), so you never have to worry about handling this. But, if it is in javascript, then someone can call the function like that. So in javascript, you might have a test that ensures that the function handles this gracefully. You obviously don't have to have that test, but you will have your app blow up later down the line, if someone adds a call like that. So, testing does occur at times for these types of things. You might not have done it ever, but there are certainly devs who have, myself included.
Yea, I think developers need to make a better conscience decision to not work on those things. I can't ever imagine taking a job doing those. It would be far to soul crushing. There are plenty of exciting and fun challenges left in tech development, you just might have to sift through all that crap to find them.
This seems to be a little over-simplistic. There are many good cases for microservices, and there are times when going into the project, you know it is what is needed. I think there are also a number of ways to make microservices, and it doesn't have to always be difficult. For instance, the last 4 projects I have built have been done with microsoervices, where the API Gateway endpoints such as /user or /machines each talk to their own lambda microservice.
Agreed. Healthy food is not as expensive as everyone makes it out to be. Even if you just ate porridge everyday, and supplemented it with some veggies, fruits, and nuts you would be fine overall.
PA? I used to have to carry the 2 6 packs to my car, and go back in for 2 more on Sundays. Oh the good old days. I am down in South Carolina now, and from what I heard, until recently they only sold liquor in bars in the little airplane bottles.
