Main things I miss when I try switching away from putty are `alt-shift` for block selection and bracketed paste in to vim https://github.com/ConradIrwin/vim-bracketed-paste

vd is so useful for browsing sqlite, csv, parquet, etc data. I just wish I used it often enough to remember how to use all the advanced features like selecting column and row subsets

This was a $2000 deductible/copay, which is capped annually. So it's not $2000 per treatment, more like $2000 per year where you need services beyond the basics. And meanwhile, having that high deductible keeps the monthly premium expense low

Sounds pretty similar to the linked story, except they got a trained staff of firefighters and EMTs show up on scene and a ride in an ambulance. He also didn't pay anything at time of service. Yes, he had to pay $2000 copay/deductible eventually, but we don't know what his monthly premiums are. I pay close to $0 month, but have a high deductible, for example.

> if you can afford the top level shit you'll have a good time, some would argue even a better time than anywhere else

This makes working hard/smartly in order to be able to do this incentivizing. Rather than just sitting back and enjoying the life/work balance and less working hours

I enjoy there being an incentive for working hard and spending time and energy/focus on better access to time off, better childcare, etc

Isn't MinIO just a better and distributed samba/nfs server?

The storage costs are only a tiny fraction of the costs involved with accessing and analyzing the data using snowflake "credits"

Really don't understand why anyone puts a side project on a pay-per-use provider when 99% of the projects would be perfectly fine on a $5/mo max vps. Although I also use a prepaid cell phone provider, so maybe I just hate the idea of blank checks.

I'm also in Chicago and have done a similar analysis. But I'd argue there are two main reasons for the per-month costs for owning are cheaper than for renting:

- Illinois is broke and is going to increase real estate taxes every year for the foreseeable future. So while you can also sell to escape the tax bill, the value will just drop to compensate. - There are many fixed costs to buying a place that aren't reflected in the monthly bills. Such as closing costs on both the purchase and sale (including chicago's lovely transfer stamp tax, realtor commissions, etc).

Also keep in mind how many high-rise condo buildings are going up right now. This can only be bad for prices of "old" condos around the city.

Web focused dev isn't the only area with interesting problems but that's definitely what gets the most attention is frankly probably the most lucrative path for most people. I work in finance as well, and am kind of too specialized in it to switch now, but I do think I'd have been better off working at the FAANGs for my whole career.

Lots of companies here are enjoying good times overwall. All the finance/trading companies have been doing really well the past year or so. Plus there has been some investment in the crypto industry including coinbase with their huge pockets
