bwang29··on From Chrome Apps to the Web
Discloser, developer of Polarr for Chrome here https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/polarr-photo-edito...

To us as developers, the biggest advantage of Chrome Store is discoverability, reviews, and store front organizations. As a fairly new developer, we also have a web app, but it is late in the game and there is no way to out-SEO the existing players through Google Search. Chrome Web Store was the place where we felt a fair game where we can compete on product quality and getting better reviews and out-rank the same competitors who also have chrome apps.

bwang29··on Ask HN: Gracefully declining support for some major browsers?
Hi, maker of Polarr Photo Editor on Chrome here. We spent a lot of time fighting different browsers x GPU x OSs. FF once reached out to us to have our app made for FF but after we published the app, the FF store was gone.
bwang29··on Google Nik collection now available for free
Oh Crap, now they're probably going to make other individual developer who'e looking for monetizing their apps harder (discloser, I work for Polarr). The only good news for competitor here is that if Google decides to drop further development of it, then the opportunity to emulate and eventually surpass Nik's functionality is huge as well.
bwang29··on AlphaGo beats the world champion Lee Sedol in first of five matches
I was just thinking, does AlphaGo's game strategy also emulate some sort of psychological strategies used by real human, such as bullying, confusing or making fun of its opponent when it sees fit.

bwang29··on Goodbye Google plus photos
As a photo editor developer, it has been difficult to see how the uploading/dowloading/creating API call via old Picasa Web Data API will evolve overtime. Right now the Google Drive API seems to be the most robust and if you are looking for extra editing functionality, we built something for Google Drive like https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/polarr-photo-edito...
bwang29··on Sid Meier's Civilization Inspired Budget
Also a fan of Civ5 and all turned based games. Another extra thought:

In Civ you will know that building such Monument will take X turns or making some other technology progress will consume Y science points. I was thinking that it would be cool to be able to track when and how long someone will be able to afford something. It would be extra cool if this could factor in stock options you received in a company or any other assets so that you can draw a projection of the 10 year finance based on current earning/churn.

bwang29··on Show HN: Lens Battle – Make comparing lenses easier (with leaflet.js)
Great resources. These are almost always qualitatively correct but it's hard to see the lens performances in real settings (out of paper) and to get an overall holistic view of the differences in "looks" . Both approaches have their merits.
bwang29··on Show HN: Lens Battle – Make comparing lenses easier (with leaflet.js)
OP here, we sort of screw up on that one.

Should have done at least two groups of auto focusing and manual focusing.

The car scene was done in a a little rush because the sun is moving. Not sure what's going on with the sigma but we made sure the camera beeps when it reports in focus at the medal Jaguar logo.

If people like this idea, we will get more lenses in the next series and add Canon and other brands if possible.

Right now the original JPEG is around 14MP and very slow to load, so we had to slide them into tiles thus using leaflet.js.

bwang29··on Show HN: Lens Battle – Make comparing lenses easier (with leaflet.js)
OP here: some of the misalignments are caused by distortions and slight camera movement. Those are the hardest to control and require repeated try. The Sigma lens is also overly heavy that pointed the camera down-ward a little. Will try to do better in the next round of lenses.
bwang29··on Computer Sciences Courses That Don't Exist, but Should
How about a "class" or some pre session on best practices of typing on the keyboard in the CS departments?

For year, I'm still struggling to type without looking at the keyboard and I make frequent typos which slow me down. Being able to type quickly and have a good habit of placing fingers on the keyboard seem to be an important exercise. A guideline to choose the right keyboard, setting up personal shortcut or customized keyboard layout for each developer might also be worth learning.

bwang29··on Ask HN: Is Medium legally an online blog?
More update.

Our lawyer gave us a go on the counter-notice. But this has started to distract me away so we're more likely to resolve it by licensing additional images from NG. The argument was that if the article is hosted on Medium, we should have disclosed this when sining the contract - otherwise it is considered deceiving because Medium is a large distribution platform as compared to an "online blog", although we believe online blog could also be large too. So basically, they would have priced the contract differently (higher) if they knew the article will be hosted on Medium : ).

bwang29··on Ask HN: Is Medium legally an online blog?
Medium is a great place for managing and circulating content. The ecosystem is strong and until we have a strong need to brand every element of the magazine out, we don't want to give up the awesome readership from Medium.com
bwang29··on Ask HN: Is Medium legally an online blog?
Thanks a lot! I've read the consequences and have submitted a counter notice, which might lead to a lawsuit from NG against us. However, after back tracking some emails, I think the confusion is indeed caused by what is "Pixel Magazine online blog", as there is no URL specified in the contract. As the article that was taken down was indeed from https://medium.com/@pixelmagazine/where-are-chernobyl-s-chil... , and the account has Pixel Magazine branding, following the rule of one time, non exclusive uses as when it was taken down, we'll lead NG to decide if they want to file a lawsuit on this. If we don't hear back from them in 10 days, the article will be back online. I will keep you guys updated!
bwang29··on Ask HN: Is Medium legally an online blog?
OP here

In the contract, there wasn't any URL address or domain specified. The only wording related to the content destination is "One-time, Non-exclusive rights to use image within the Gerd Ludwig interview piece for Pixel Magazine online blog." I think the problem is as many pointed out - that there was a confusion that the Pixel Magazine blog was hosted on Medium.com. We came up with the Pixel Magazine name very recently, and were also migrating our content to the new @pixelmagazine handle. We used to be @polarrist on medium. This might create more confusion because @polarrist is now all routing to @pixelmagazine now so https://medium.com/@polarrist/where-are-chernobyl-s-children... is pointing to the same article. We added more branding elements (the logo) to make sure this is indeed the Pixel Magazine.

I think the take away from our experience is that, definitely make sure in the contract, specify the URL and domain name.

As we only maintain this one blog, I think the "one time, non exclusive" reflects the spirit of the contract more. We should have just specify that we will only post this in one and only one blog ever hosted on the internet.

We pretty much don't have a place to post this article anymore, until we hear back from NG.

bwang29··on Show HN: Polarr Plugin: Edit Any Photo on the Internet
There is also an extension for Chrome:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/polarr-plugin-edit...

We made this little plugin for people to edit a photo on the internet easier. It might be ideal for a designer, web developer who's watching unsplash everyday. Appreciate any comment and feedback.

V2 is still under lots of work but it is getting close to a reliable editor now. IndexedDB and WebSQL really helped.

The right hand side panel pretty much does what Lightroom is doing mostly and you're in full control of which direction of your photo is moving into.

bwang29··on Show HN: Polarr.co, a WebGL photo editor
From my developer point of view, it is mostly distribution. It is not necessarily non-native or native but whatever it takes to make updates, on-boarding, and selling/free trails easier would attract developers and perhaps going to save them time and energy so they can focus more on building. I think thus the end users might expect higher quality works from non-native apps. But the platform web apps is building on is still lacking in terms of the "app box" metaphor as well as access to local file systems, gpu and guranteed amount of memory etc, which makes web-wrapped apps (like Slack, hipchat? dunno) appealing.

The community feature isn't in its prime time yet, once we nail most of the issues out for the editing experience and attracted a sizable audience, the Lookbook will perhaps become the largest photo style guide, crowd-sourced.
