"It is caused by peoples' jobs not paying a living wage" Where I come from minimum wage is enough to pay for a rent.
"the cops really hate the homeless. Someone can't periodically destroy a bunch of peoples' meager shelter in completely unproductive "sweeps" without developing a view that they're less than human." Again I may be wrong but where I live there are no 'homeless villages' like there are in the US.
I think you should step back from the code and talk to the people. Ask them why they did something like this or like that. Show them that you value their work but that it is a shame that you can't fully enjoy it.
Do not start a situation in which it is them vs you.
That is what I do with many services I use. I ask a reset password link every time I use them. I then just copy paste a random passphrase as new password and forget about it.
Edit: it seems I am wrong. I commented a bit too fast.
It is about a man who becomes immortal and experiences a lot of things. Without spoiling you, it turns out not to be as great as expected.
Apart from this there is the somewhat classical : "A famous quote tells us the three things every man should do during his time on earth: Plant a tree, have a son and write a book. The reason behind this quote is generally believed to be that we are only here for a short time and these three things will live on long after we have passed. It’s like leaving a legacy and in a sense achieving a kind of immortality."
Google apps store does not allow you to buy an app in Japanese from the UK, Amazon.jp requires a different account than amazon.co.uk (which is not the case for amazon.com), Netflix does not provide Japanese subtitles for animes, same for steam, some games are in many languages but not Japanese.
I think a domain where it can exceptionally shine is the adult entertainment industry.
Also I have a dumbphone and I am the only person my friend send SMS too. That makes me quite a unique person !
Generally speaking, thanks to spammer linking has become impossible outside of social media platforms.
What cost have you chosen to bear ? Do you exclusively use public transport ? Have you banned planes from your life ? Home delivery (the last mile is the one that creates the more pollution) ? What share of your revenue do you give to plant trees ?
> You need to send signals like this to the market well in advance so they can invest and plan ahead.
We are talking about billion dollars of investment at stake. You need years to train engineers, develop new technologies, ...
The role of politics is not only to implement policies but also to signal where we are heading so that a decentralized solution can be achieved.
I maintain one machine learning model that is very core to our business but doing 'machine learning' is a very portion of my job.
> Think about this - there are a bunch of other software developers who know SQL very well. If your advice was true, then every backend developer would be able to immediately land a data science job and do great at it without having to learn a bunch of math, ML-specific stuff and a whole other tech stack.
In some companies Data scientists are very software development oriented but that is not the case of everywhere. Think about this : software developers who know SQL very well usually don't like cleaning data, they don't necessarily have good interpersonal skills required to solve business problems, they are not necessarily interested in solving business problems, and they may tend to think that more software is the solution to all problems.
Bonus point it is very easy to learn.
I completely agree. I used to read only non fiction books. I have started reading fantasy fiction books a year or two ago and the thing that blew my mind is that these books have stories! Not the Nth variation of the same pattern that exists in every Hollywood movie but something I had never encountered before. I had given up on novelty years ago. That is really refreshing.
I used to complain a lot about the "here are the top X" so-called blog posts. But when you want information about a topic that you don't know anything about and for which you have absolutely no will to invest time in they are all you need to know.
Or take reddit. You want to learn about a topic. Go to its subreddit. Sort posts by top with timeframe = all time and after half an hour reading the top posts you know pretty much all you need to know about the topic (mundane topics obviously. Scientific topics excluded).
I could go on and on. It becomes hard to find a hidden gem on the internet becomes gems are not hidden anymore but exposed.
I have noticed that most of my time is spent finding what to do, get their opinion about new projects from my team members (who are nice people I enjoy working with), and most of the time I find that I am not the person qualified for the job and the problem can be solved in a way that does not involve data work.
Finding what to do and how to minimize the effort in implementing a solution is 90% of my job.
There are days I write SQL as well and those day I am very focused. The days I am not focused it's mostly because There is no go from A to B job to do.
