bvanvugt··on Ask HN: How much info should founders share with early stage employees?
At that size, share everything. But also share all realistic outcomes, including what failure cases might look like. It's more about earning trust than "pumping" anyone up.
bvanvugt··on Removal of Heroku free product plans
Our community recently pulled together a guide for comparing different free hosting providers.

https://blog.battlesnake.com/deploying-web-servers-for-free-...

It's really a shame, given how much we've relied on Heroku free tiers to lower barriers fr all.

bvanvugt··on Show HN: Bomberland – An AI competition to build the best Bomberman bot
I'm one of the devs behind Battlesnake (https://play.battlesnake.com), and what Joy and the Coder One team are building looks awesome :)

Anything that gets more folks coding, especially at non-beginner levels, is a huge win imo. Congrats on the launch!

Bashtle Snake is one of the greatest Battlesnakes ever made.

Hey, thanks for playing! <3
bvanvugt··on Launch HN: MagicBell (YC W21) – embedded notification system for your product
Hi Hana & Josue - congrats on the launch! This looks like a wonderful product. As a developer I've built (admittedly terrible) versions of this, over and over... look forward to trying it!
bvanvugt··on Battlesnake – Competitive Snake Games over HTTP
This is a super interesting question to us, and to be honest we're not sure of the answer. Is it possible for a single ML snake to achieve 100% 1v1 win rate? What about 1v7?

What we've learned so far is that playing against multiple snakes, especially AI/ML driven snakes, adds an incredible amount of complexity to the game and the top ranked snakes tend switch around quite a bit as players adjust to attack/defend specific strategies.

If anyone has formal theory around this sort of problem, we'd love to investigate further.

bvanvugt··on Battlesnake – Competitive Snake Games over HTTP
Yeah I like something like this: "Build a bot to play the classic game 'Snake'"
bvanvugt··on Battlesnake – Competitive Snake Games over HTTP
Haha, yes! We actually had a "Tron Mode" at the tournament last year that just flooded the board with food to replicate light cycles.

Heroku is a really good option for beginners (and it's free!) We've got a few repos on GitHub that can be forked and deployed directly to Heroku:

bvanvugt··on Insomnia 3.0 – A simple and beautiful REST API client
Yes! I've been using Insomnia since it was a Chrome extension and the new 3.0 release is an amazing upgrade. I strongly agree with the developer that tools like Postman are quite bloated and complex for normal development tasks. Insomnia is very lightweight and refreshing!
bvanvugt··on Millennials Flee Vancouver for More Affordable Cities
There are actually some really interesting (and young!) startups in Victoria.

We have an office there and our team maintains a city-wide startup listing + job board:

bvanvugt··on Canada's R&D tax credit program hurts R&D in Canada
It's really important that programs like Canadian SR&ED are being scrutinized in the context of startups, and on that theme I'm really happy to see this discussion.

I think it's more interesting to see how Canadian founders can shape these sorts of policies over the next 5-10 years, and this is a great starting point.

bvanvugt··on Convox – Launch a Private Cloud in Minutes
Is anyone using this in production? If so, at what scale?
bvanvugt··on The role of a Senior Developer
Ah interesting. Wonder why it allowed me to resubmit...
bvanvugt··on Ask HN: Why does Google not standardize parental leave for all employees?
Yep absolutely. Maybe perfectly standardized packages aren't possible, but they should (I think?) be able to offer "pretty similar" packages to all employees.
bvanvugt··on Show HN: Treev – Search Bar for Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, and Trello (Chrome)
Looks great, was super fast to setup. I probably don't have a personal use case... but for work I think this would be great.

Would love to see Asana/Hackpad support soon.

At our core, Sendwithus is a simple and highly scalable REST API to manage and send templated emails in real-time. Our API powers millions of emails each day.

We believe in product experience above all else and use continuous customer feedback to drive all product development. Our customers are hackers, marketers, startups, and enterprises alike – and we like it that way.

We're a close-knit and passionate team of 10, with offices in San Francisco and Victoria.

Lead Engineer, Frontend - competitive salary, equity options

We're looking for an experienced frontend web developer to help architect and lead our customer facing applications.

You'll be responsible for architecture and technical design of all user facing applications, including our primary UI (the sendwithus dashboard), landing pages, and other public resources.

Engineer #6 (Full-stack, Python/Django) - competitive salary, equity options

Email jobs@sendwithus.com to chat about either role.

bvanvugt··on TANX: online multiplayer tank battle using WebGL and Node.js
This is an amazing experience and a ton of fun.

I loved being instantly put into a game. I was able to immediately recognize that I was on a team and dive face first into the battle.

Sure, the controls and hit detection are a bit flakey, but experiencing this for the first time was a lot of fun. Great job :)

bvanvugt··on Ask HN: How can I stop being jealous of people who succeed before me?
Exactly this -- openly acknowledge it, talk about it with close friends, and move on. There are bigger things to accomplish.
bvanvugt··on Pg_shard – PostgreSQL extension to scale out real-time reads and writes
Very cool to see this open sourced.

Any advice on migration process? Transferring a high write-throughput postgres instance to a multi-pg deployment with pg_shard feels pretty daunting.

bvanvugt··on Consul.io – Service discovery and configuration made easy
Is anybody using this in large production systems?
bvanvugt··on Ask HN: What makes an API good?
Agree with notjosh on this -- so what makes documentation good?
bvanvugt··on Reviewing common API Editors
Cool, would love to see it if available publicly.
bvanvugt··on Reviewing common API Editors
Awesome - what about using API Editors (or similar tools) as a way to browse or explore an API?

I've seen a lot of companies roll their own API "Explorers" too: https://dev.twitter.com/rest/tools/console https://developers.facebook.com/tools/ http://products.wolframalpha.com/api/explorer.html

As well as generic Rest API Explorers: http://www.getpostman.com/

bvanvugt··on Slack Is Raising Another Round at Up to a $1B Valuation?
We've been using Slack for quite a while now after trying HipChat, FlowDock, etc, and love it.

The major selling point for us is it's incoming Webhook API.

We use it to communicate deployment status, major customer events, and general fun & hilarity (/giphy).

bvanvugt··on Sendwithus (YC W14) Announces $2.3M to Humanize Transactional Email
Email Marketing is changing. It's no longer about spamming customers with "marketing BS" whenever possible. It's about sending the right content at the right time and delighting your customers.

Email (especially transactional email) should be an extension of your product, owned by creative and ambitious product teams - that's what Sendwithus enables.

bvanvugt··on Ask HN: What does a 'stealth' startup mean?
It can also mean they're working closely with a small number of customers to rapidly prototype and validate early versions of a product.
