butz··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
Your app should've been a website.
butz··on Nokia’s years of mobile-phone supremacy ended in an afternoon
And at the 2026 wea are in a very sad state, where only choice for new smartphone is a huge rectangle with varying sizes of camera bumps on the back.
butz··on Proton AG Services is currently experiencing some issues
Someone probably pushed to prod on Friday.
butz··on Buried Apple feature turns an iPhone into the perfect kids' dumb phone
This is actually a really great feature for everyone else trying to reduce their phone use without switching to different "dumbphone". But why mandatory lock by passcode? I agree, that adding more friction would prevent user to switch back to standard UI, but still - it should be optional.
butz··on Maestral open-source Dropbox client no longer actively supported
Sad news. I wonder what project maintainer is using now instead of Dropbox?
butz··on Real-time map of Great Britain's rail network
It would be amazing if someone could visualize this data in Railroad Tycoon or Transport Tycoon game engine.
butz··on Order a burned CD of your own public GitHub repo
Nice try, Microsoft. You ain't getting any of my personal data.
butz··on Quake in 13 Kilobytes (2021)
Imagine, if someone would start making operating system and its applications that are just kilobytes in size. RAM price crysis would resolve in a day.
butz··on PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform
I think https://peerseek.video is sort of aggregator website, not sure how much instances it covers, though.
butz··on PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform
I heard that main source of income for some professional YouTubers are Patreon and sponsorships. Ad revenue is dead last and very unstable. Also, if you are building your business on single platform, which one day might decide that your content does not adhere to their rules - that's a high risk to take.
butz··on PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform
Personally, I find the lack of videos to watch on PeerTube a huge plus. I tremendously reduced my weekly video watching time and I don't feel like missing out on something important. My favorite instance is makertube.net, but I visit few others too.
butz··on Jolla Phone (October 2026)
Who designed such ridiculous camera bump? It would be a really nice device, if only it had a flat backside.
butz··on A game where you're an OS and have to manage processes, memory and I/O events
Easy, just give all RAM to Chrome.
butz··on Show HN: Got sick of ads, so I made my own logic puzzle site
Yes, that's what all classic Nintendo Picross games used to do. And there's a bit of mystery - you never know what you will uncover.
butz··on I am a person who will look at the Steam Machine and cry
It is possible to build an equivalent PC with Steam Machine specs, with same case size (internal PSU) and similar or lower price? I'll probably still a wait a bit to see reviews from actual users, but I really dig the form factor and was unable to find anything similarly sized with built-in PSU.
butz··on Show HN: Got sick of ads, so I made my own logic puzzle site
Not really sure if you can call Nonogram a puzzle, when you give the answer right in the title.
butz··on Stop Killing Games fails to secure EU law despite 1.3M signatures
Government should just release legislation, that games that require additional upkeep should provide "Best before" date. That should make customers carefully consider their purchase up front, and instead of buying latest and greatest AAA title, purchase a few 10 year old indie games.
butz··on UK to require ID or face scan before you can make social media accounts
Next up: fake mustache and glasses e-shop requires ID or face scan.
butz··on Commodore Releases Flip Phone
Main question: can you open it with a single hand?
butz··on Reddit RSS feeds recent rate limiting and solution
RSS feeds supposed to be the cheapest way to read data from your website, they are not pulling whole 10MB of javascript and other assets, but, yeah, let's block those. Everyone will just send their "llm agents" to pull data from regular website anyway.
butz··on Upcoming breaking changes for npm v12
Better late than never.
butz··on WWDC 2026: Apple is Folding
How about phones that you can attach one to another and have as much of a phone as you want? Buy two phones - simple foldable. 4? That's almost a tablet worth of screen estate. Want more? Only your budget is the limit. Go as far as 85" TV if you want.
butz··on Show HN: Performative-UI – A react component library of design tropes
Thank you, animation looks really neat.
butz··on Thunderbird Littering My Home
Is there any hope that Thunderbird might benefit from XDG config directories fix that Firefox recently implemented?
butz··on Show HN: Performative-UI – A react component library of design tropes
Dickover is suspiciously missing. How will I ask visitors to subscribe to my newsletter?
butz··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
Oh shit, look at those RAM and SDD prices.
butz··on Show HN: I reverse-engineered the world maps of Test Drive III (1990 DOS game)
Neat viewer. I wonder, why boats and cars in groud view ended up in such high altitude?
butz··on 32GB of DDR5 now costs $375 – AI shortage continues to squeeze PC building
Time to migrate all those electron "native" apps to actual native code. I bet with some decent optimizations 4GB will be more than enough for casual user, and still with some free memory to spare.
butz··on GrapheneOS Speech Services version 2 released
Is there any way this could be used as default text to speech engine on Linux?
butz··on WikiMedia Foundation Community Tech team has been disbanded, engineers laid off
