i will keep it in mind! thank you

busssard··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
as a big fanboy of cardano back in the day, i have yet to see one that has managed to bridge the UX divide that has enough public trust.

i know of some mutual credit systems that can work, but also here, it requires the trust of a big enough amount of people to trigger network effects!

busssard··on Climate is accumulating 4 Hiroshima atomic bombs worth of heat per second
i never said that. I said sudden cold breaks will happen more frequently later in the year. It might cause (homeless) people to die maybe. But it will be way more catastrophic to food safety.
busssard··on Most data centers refusing to say how much water, electricity they use
maybe they work for a datacenter
busssard··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
what would be an alternative currently? i know of services like twint but this is a local swiss solution. any more EU wide established solutions??
busssard··on Climate is accumulating 4 Hiroshima atomic bombs worth of heat per second
i think hiroshima eqivalents is a somewhat informal energy unit -.-
busssard··on Climate is accumulating 4 Hiroshima atomic bombs worth of heat per second
and due to climate change the phenomenon called "meandering jetstreams" will only amplify. this will destabilize the jetstreams and allow for sudden breakouts of extremely cold polar air even in times when this should not happen. like snow in May...

very nice+ I have a project on my "will i ever start this" list for putting this onto a sphere with integrated IMU/acc

Thank you for translating. Reading the comment section of HN is again and again showing that we should never assume the other side understood what we meant.
busssard··on Sonnet 5.5
i am in a similar state, i joined a bigger family owned company as a source of safety. And AI is not the only "threat" that we are facing. I recently built this tool to come to terms with where to live, because i want at least some certainty on geographical factors: https://om-intelligence.ch/projects/polycrisis.html

but the AI thing is on one side using lots of energy to keep up with it, and on the other side gives you an edge, because most people are not aware what even is already possible. so suddenly you are the "AI-Expert" just because you try to keep up to date. so if it all goes to shit, at least we have a chance to sniff it in the wind a couple moments beforehand. Or make memes from it.. that helped me cope with it: https://t.me/RobotComrades

I hope you find a peer group to talk with and exchange and build community. it is so rewarding to talk to likeminded people that have a similar knowledge base and soothe some fears that someone might have, and have them help you with the ones i have... (i recently did a deep dive in custom DNA synthesis, and how connected those services are already to API https://www.twistbioscience.com/tapi )

as always accepting what is seems to be a healthy strategy

busssard··on Sonnet 5.5
that.

also i find it interesting how the capabilities are growing. first speech, then code, then simple tools, then 3d objects, then desktop use

busssard··on Sonnet 5.5
for very extensive agent swarms, you could tell the orchestrator to use sonnet agents for the eval of papers. this way you can digest much more papers (content of whatever form)

so whenever you are dealing with volume rather than independence. opus5.5 can define the goals of a sonnet well enough, that i would trust it with a group of 100s of agents

busssard··on Biology might not be quantum, but its math is quantumlike
I thought there was a paper last year proving in some way that the effect that lets pidgeons see the magnetic field is due to quantum effects.

can midges transmit disease?
busssard··on Show HN: Where in Europe to Survive the Polycrisis
That doesnt take into consideration the possibility of gulf stream collapse...
busssard··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
exaggeration makes visible, runaway collisions are definitely a problem. I didnt like the movie, but space collisions are no joke...
busssard··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
would radiation pressure not counterbalance the radiation pressure from the sun?

given solar cells are only 30% efficient. if you put the radiators behind the panels then you have the structure already and always keep the radiators shaded

busssard··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
this is also about geopolitics. Destroying satellites in space hurts your own space infrastructure (see the movie "Gravity")

On the ground nothing harms your own infra by dropping a bomb on another datacenter that might be powering the opponents entire military strategy.

Terrorism threat is nonexistent now, but maybe not in the future.

busssard··on F-Droid 2.0
i have occasionally browsed. but the experience is not very pleasant.. droidify is a bit better but also not much
busssard··on Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem?
yeah but the problem they solved is not really useful. the article is also quite clear on that
busssard··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
most large corporations can be seen like this. Thats why stakeholder management is a full time job in those places.
busssard··on Stanford R&DE Uses AI to Race Swap Students for Advertising
The change of the peoples faces might just be an artifact of nano banana regenerating the image.

I have done similar things and it sometimes changes the apperance of the people in the image. They might have also wanted to change the pullover of the guy wearing GAP.

And honestly targetgroup research should have happened before the photograph was taken. Not in post... but hey that was the big promise of genrative models right? The thing is, the marketing department could have posed in their office holding staplers and notepads and then asked the model to recreate the image as well. to even save the cost for the photographer...

busssard··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
definitely.

i am terrified of the nudging that is/might be already happening in the consumer context. Cambridge analytica showed us what is possible when you just shift the things people see, imagine what is possible when you shift what their personal assistant tells them.

GPT Wormtounge sends his regards

busssard··on Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem?
yeah i agree its dramatized, but the situation was quite dramatized by the parties involved as well. i just find it quite funny, that the perceived drama might play out like this now.
busssard··on MiMo v2.6
copilot is doing the same. i just joined a corporate and they only allow copilot. i am getting brain cancer using it, especially being used to claude max from before.

but cost is a thing, if i use the LLM gateway for a chatGPT-5.4 i am quickly (3 days of very light use) on 50$ in token. and everyone and their intern are using copilot. As azure has the guarantee that company data will not leak they are taking the bait.

The fear of secrets landing in the training data is just too big, and they are all microsoft 365 customers already. And lastly Management seeing that copilot can autonomously edit an excel file for them already counts as mindblowing... 0_0

busssard··on MiMo v2.6
yeah nobody is happy using windows either, but still they all do anyways.

we would be better off using linux all together, but here we are. Lets see maybe every company will have their own little instance of a local LLM in their basement in the future, when the AI-bubble pops and server-racks become cheap

busssard··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
i would assume yes, to throw off decyphering. even more impressive that they managed to crack it
