burnthrow··on Investors double down on stocks, pushing margin debt to record
Momentum trading is a specific TA approach which I seriously doubt parent knows about. It doesn't sound like identifying "Momentum driven companies" (wut) but specific technical signals. More likely they have $1000 in RobinHood and their "big loss" was $200, so this entire thread is pointless.
burnthrow··on Investors double down on stocks, pushing margin debt to record
You should not be actively investing.

To be clear to the three instant downvoters, I'm saying parent is deluded and is going to lose repeatedly, not that active investing is a losing proposition in general:

> 2) Momentum driven companies where tons of liquidity is flowing to (TSLA etc)

Put the money in the money thing! Yea! Parent is the portrait of sad hype-driven retail investor.

burnthrow··on Investors double down on stocks, pushing margin debt to record
Everyone invert this. Poor OP's going to get slaughtered again.

burnthrow··on How Apple’s rivals plan to catch up with the M1 chip
Welch school is notorious for overwork and fast firing. It's ironic to see coldtea portray Swan's potential firing as a hit to morale. Swan's a bean counter and a bozo, and Intel needs big changes at the top.

Typical: https://www.oregonlive.com/silicon-forest/2017/08/intels_cfo...

burnthrow··on Getting rid of NPM scripts
Install scripts typically have access to build environments.
burnthrow··on How Apple’s rivals plan to catch up with the M1 chip
Swan is a Jack Welch protege, so...
burnthrow··on Getting rid of NPM scripts
Git will fallback to `git-$command` for any unknown command. That tool works by installing an executable at `git-open`. It works "magically" with npx because npx is installing it for you.
burnthrow··on How Apple’s rivals plan to catch up with the M1 chip
Intel realized they can't sell the same processor for another 10 years by combining more words with "lake." A power-hungry chip that meant most consumers replaced their laptop every few years for no performance benefit, shameful.
burnthrow··on Zoom Shared US User Data with Beijing
Maybe you're being downvoted because many of us knew about Zoom for at least a year prior, and individual obliviousness is not interesting.

That and the conspiratorial tone, probably.

> Hmmm...guess CCP got to keep Zoom alive.

burnthrow··on Zoom Shared US User Data with Beijing
> When Zoom usage exploded during the pandemic, China tightened control. It ordered Zoom employees to shut down what Beijing calls “illegal” meetings and accounts within one minute. If it took more than one minute, it was rated “security non-compliant.”

Sounds like due process!

burnthrow··on Domino’s Pizza drove increase in stock value by acting like a startup
Reading between the lines: Advertising. It's a bit silly to believe that Domino's is the only place offering fast, cheap, unhealthy delivery.
burnthrow··on Domino’s Pizza drove increase in stock value by acting like a startup
I've never heard of a pizzeria outsourcing delivery, none of this is remarkable. Maybe it's different in the UK.
burnthrow··on New Linux port for the Nintendo 64
+1 HN point for a complaining top comment in a thread where there's literally nothing to complain about.
burnthrow··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
> making Google’s index of the web available for use by competitors

What incentive would Google have to continue populating that index?

Would I be breaking the law if I independently crawled and hosted an index without publishing an API for it?

> since no one other than Google is really allowed to crawl the web

Maybe this is the problem that needs solving.

burnthrow··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
And the Pinterest pages have no content! They've beaten Google or Google doesn't care anymore, either way, plummeting result quality is a strong signal that Google Search is ripe for disruption. Ten years ago, Google would've punished all Pinterest properties for this.
burnthrow··on GoDaddy employees told they were getting a holiday bonus in a phishing test
In summary, they failed the test.
burnthrow··on Ask HN: About Financial Inequity
You shouldn't be freelancing if you're short on rent a month after losing the big client, per your GoFundMe. Why aren't you seeking a more stable permanent position? You likely have more quality full-remote opportunities available right now than at any other time in your career, even in the down economy. If it's because you believe people aren't hiring, look again, you may be surprised; there's strong demand for LAMP devs right now and your salary demands are quite low. If it's because you prefer freelancing, surely a permanent position is better than asking for donations and taking out loans in the meantime. Applying to jobs, you pay no advertising and in general it is less involved than the dreadful task of finding new freelance clients.

burnthrow··on I rewrote a Clojure tool in Rust
No it's not clear, this is another rehash of the static vs. dynamic debate, and you're welcome to your side. It's ludicrous to claim that highly complex systems cannot be written in a maintainable fashion with a dynamically-typed programming language. Anyway this gets to what bugged me about the post, the author is plainly not comfortable with Clojure and wants it to be Haskell-y. So of course they're going to be happy in a language like Rust.
burnthrow··on I rewrote a Clojure tool in Rust
Yes but it's not clear how. The post is light on details in general.
burnthrow··on I rewrote a Clojure tool in Rust
> Clojure can only ever match Java in performance

You're technically correct, but the typical Java program making heavy use of threads has inefficiencies (and incorrectness) that would be avoided with Clojure's higher level async APIs. As it's easier to write idiomatic, performant C than the "faster" ASM.

burnthrow··on I rewrote a Clojure tool in Rust
> After switching to Rust, I had to implement more complicated logic that resolved dependencies between the rules I was diffing. This became complicated enough that even with a static type system I could only barely understand it. I doubt I would have been able to finish it in Clojure.

I have no idea what the author's trying to say here.

burnthrow··on More challenging projects every programmer should try
The puzzles aren't fun at all. Like you said, they're basically "write a parser + complete a tedious word problem." They require substantial time investment for little creative reward, it's basically masochism.

Perl Advent Calendar is my jam.

burnthrow··on An oral history of the Bed Bath and Beyond coupon

burnthrow··on The Internet Is for Porn
My code's not too shabby, but I don't think anybody's bust a nut to it.
burnthrow··on The Internet Is for Porn
Nice, found a bunch of vids of featured "performer" Aella getting boffed on Spankbang. Surely "unashamed casual porn consumer" OP would have no problem if his sister were also a "performer" on Onlyfans.
burnthrow··on Equity guide for employees at fast-growing companies
Unless you're willing to sacrifice several of your best years for the startup and hold a winning lottery ticket, your options are worthless, in fact they have negative value because you have to waste the fucking time and energy hearing about them and signing documents. There's your guide.
