burnthrow··on Hawaii’s Beaches Are Disappearing
It's to prevent catastrophic erosion to the property, at the expense of the beach. You build a house on the beach like a fool, then destroy the beach to protect your investment. Nature-loving people.
burnthrow··on Quitting a New Job
> does it really matter if you are good at leetcode if they feel you won't stay around long?

Yes. Hard technical skills are even more important in that situation.

burnthrow··on Quitting a New Job
> The only thing that seems to count is your tenure, so don't fuck it up. You might not even get to the leetcode step if you do.

This is flat wrong. Are you only applying to Fortune 500s or something?

burnthrow··on SolarWinds: The more we learn, the worse it looks
> It's nice that Microsoft is admitting that the open-source approach is the right one for security -- something I and other open-source advocates have been saying for decades. But, inner source isn't the same thing as open source.

I thought this was common knowledge, but in a previous related thread my comment saying the same was downvoted with some replies about how MS engineers are security gods or some such. Interesting to contrast mainstream tech coverage with HN's RSU echo chamber.

Thoughts of "a year later" and MVP mostly don't mix.

Agreed about coverage.

> finding that same bug 2 minutes after you wrote it (and before it got released) is massively quicker.

That's not realistic.

Your last paragraph about overwork seems unrelated to TDD dogma.

First, great blog post.

> The net result is data consistency across components/screens (which is great)

You probably don't need to be told this, but... how badly was the data really going to drift during a session? If a user notices that part of the UI is stale, they just hit reload, not a big deal. This could be improved later.

burnthrow··on 20 months, 2K hours, 200K € lost. A story about resilience and sunk cost fallacy
It's rather unlikely that an anon on social media (HN) is "the guy you're selling to." Possible, but there are so many other motivations for a critical comment. "The guy you're selling to" is tangible and clearly has money to spend to solve a real problem.

Test suite is not free to create or maintain. To your example, for a product that isn't mature, a UI test suite is a waste of time and greatly increases the cost of UI changes.

This is practically every software business, and is absolutely an illustration of success.

Thanks for linking those projects and for "yet", which led me to the pages below

burnthrow··on Rust is now overall faster than C in benchmarks
This topic is of great interest to me, do you know if there is any related official or community documentation on using arena allocation (and the problems you mentioned) in Rust? I've only found https://doc.rust-lang.org/1.1.0/arena/index.html

How did this even make its way to HN? This is the blog's first post, and it has placeholder About and Contact pages. The one newer post:

> Here is my thesis: despite all the talk of Trump as an American Caesar or a king, he is in fact the last gasp of real democracy in our country.

Deep satire blog?

burnthrow··on Rust is now overall faster than C in benchmarks
Was faster and is the same, checking isn't free. Not that Rust is slow. C++ is unsafe by default whereas in Rust it is opt-in (lexically scoped). The Rust implementations don't appear to use `unsafe`.

I sort of doubt that, billions of dollars have been spent on cancer research.
burnthrow··on Do I have to worry about copyright issues for code posted on Stack Overflow?
Why is this downvoted? The submission title is idiotic. If a colleague asked me this, I'd want to find another job. It's something somebody fresh out of a "Boot Camp" would ask.
burnthrow··on Atlassian Cloud ToS section 3.3(I) prohibits discussing performance issues
Come on, everything is slow and you know it.
burnthrow··on Apple has threatened to remove Amphetamine from the App Store
Puritanism? These are Macs, this is a classy place, we take our drugs to the bathroom thank you very much. Amphetamine.app is so gauche!
burnthrow··on Apple has threatened to remove Amphetamine from the App Store
Well, it's a play on Caffeine.app's name. I'll make an ever better Mac force-wake program called Crack Binge.app, anyone who dislikes this name is a puritan Apple sycophant.
burnthrow··on Show HN: I made a job board that doesn't allow HackerRank tests
^^^ This is why you need tests of hard skills. This is the narration of a C player hiring D player friends. And it's "risk averse."

Also, if you drop a pin while zoomed out at all, you are going to look at a user's PhotoSphere, no questions. I've tested this at length, no degree of precision in your pin drop will avoid the PhotoSphere, it owns the pin drop region at most zoom levels.
burnthrow··on Anonymously call out the bad behavior of “ghosting” by recruiters
Agreed. I rather they ghost and save my time. Once I accept an offer I pretty much ghost everyone else.
