burner831234··on Silicon Valley exodus: Bay Area tech companies leaving for Texas
Agreed, but luckily the bay area includes all kinds of architecture that isn't corporate offices.

And they are pulling them back or requesting a full move, using taxes as the reason.
burner831234··on Who Americans spend their time with, by age
Actually the rise of suburbs was subsidized by the federal government.

Separately a lot of state and local legislation that is contentious can be copy pasted and sent along by lobbying groups.

burner831234··on Who Americans spend their time with, by age
I agree with most of this

One thing I've learned in my 30s is its not a genetic lottery. There are definitely very irrevocable dynamics but many can be molded with a level of concern, effort and boundary setting that we usually associate with work added with a dash of true sincerity and deep care.

What I absolutely love about this comment is that I feel exactly the opposite. Love mugi tororo and cannot figure out how eel is popular at all.

Nips. banned.

burner831234··on The Strange Disappearance of Cooperation in America (2013)
One could, but studies have shown this partisan extremism was really rooted in the need for a subgroup to get as much representation as they could:

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/05/religious-ri...

Basically turning the republican party into a pod party

And ^^ the government was aware and enabling this increase in drugs/drug-related crime to disrupt political movements for, specifically equality:

burner831234··on Stripe Climate
Part of our political system's fiction and ability to make no progress is deeply ingrained in lobbying and expenses that is more PR than impact. I think this is the parent post's point.

We think its a "grand pie in the sky", meanwhile some other countries are making real moves. Corporations meanwhile get to "do something" while in reality doing very little.

I also worked at eBay and never heard that said.

burner831234··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
I feel like this should be far more upvoted than it is. PR is America. They aren't immigrants, they are migrants, just like most of SF's tech class.
burner831234··on Hiring for tech jobs has increased more than 100% in these Midwestern cities
There is a distinct lived difference that is based on, you guessed it! generalities. Instead of nitpicking OP, its worth the attempt of empathy.

The small towns of PA (hey! loved that someone put this here) can be just as racist as the small towns of Colorado but somehow this doesn't extend to the small towns of California.

I say this as someone who has not lived everywhere but has lived in places where the common question (and yes, each town/city I lived in had a common question/conversation about my race)ranges from:

Are you black?

Are you jewish?

Are you honduran?

Are you armenian?

Are you [some subgroup of..] indian

Only in Japan, so far, am I - told - that I am American. Its amazing.

Exposure matters. Certainly there are a smattering of places in the midwest where things are progressive. That being said, they are not as well known and compared to my life in SF/LA/DC (still kinda conservative)/NY, the amount you're allowed to live and let live varies.

I'm more likely to hear some random comment about where I do or do not belong or some idiotic belief I have to disabuse about who I am in the Midwest and South.

burner831234··on Show HN: I made a site where you practice typing by retyping entire novels
This is wonderful. I have been working with my mother (english is her fourth language) to learn how to type and also to improve her English.

I am really looking forward to sharing this with her over the weekend.

burner831234··on Words from Old Books
I found the use of "gentler age" to be a fun satirical note
burner831234··on Chuck Feeney Is Now Officially Broke
I think the reason people suggest anonymity as a morally positive or superior action is because this isn't in trade. You've given it away (as noted above) without having your name in etched letters on a building, without a desire for notoriety and not in trade of previous or in fact continuous poor deeds. Consider for example the controversy around Bezos' donations.

It is very similar in fact to tithing instead of the practice of having your name called out in service in front of everyone so you can later trade on that donation for social standing.

burner831234··on Is insurance more expensive in Black neighborhoods?
Whatever reason is the frustration. Its not "whatever reason" or some huge unknown. Its decades and decades of policy including redlining and developers who openly didn't rent or let black americans buy homes and banks that openly gave black americans with great credit shittier loans while the govt bankrolled the development of suburbs for white people.

I realize I'm frustratedly typing and I think my frustration is the "aw shucks, who knows why this is happening. The data is a mess" conversation while there are entire books and sub disciplines in "subjective" research like Law, Politics, Geography, Urban development and others that could easily answer these questions and have many times over.

burner831234··on Who still needs the office? U.S. companies start cutting space
The immaturity is not realizing that the tech company is reinventing the company store of the past. the salary and these cheap perks (compared to more salary) still net out to a win for the company. if it wasn't, they wouldn't do it. and that time you spend washing clothes at home can also be spent talking to other ppl at home, watching tv, reading a book...not working.

also, quite frankly as someone who has had a life that spans restaurant cooking and FANNG employment, that food will never be as good for you as food you make for yourself/ someone makes for you at hom.

burner831234··on Teachers are ready to quit rather than put their lives at risk
Such a good point. Ppl really do not seem to understand this.
burner831234··on Teachers are ready to quit rather than put their lives at risk
Amazing for someone to write off 140k deaths. Only 58,000 died in Vietnam. Thats literally in and out of "theaters of war". 1900 died in the Gulf war and those are ppl who "signed up for it".

So, only 140k died. Callous AF.

burner831234··on My family saw a police car hit a kid, then I learned how NYPD impunity works
You could also ask the people you serve with. I believe a chomsky approach to our lives is very important. Its useful to have a diverse set of friends and colleagues because through multiple view points you have a chance at understanding more of the world.
burner831234··on See what your SF rent gets you in an emerging city
Love the idea

Prices esp for LA, Austin, Boulder and other cities seems tremendously off unless considering the cheapest areas of each city rather than the average sq foot price.

burner831234··on A 125-year-old delivery network that feeds Mumbai
I think its a great question. There is a high cultural value in eating warm/freshly cooked meals. While you can get sandwiches even those have warm components (vada pav, grilled cheese etc). These meals are made in the late morning usually by a female member of the household and sent off.
burner831234··on Justice Department, states likely to bring antitrust lawsuits against Google
I would argue its not similar at all. Finding those reputable sellers can be more difficult whereas this would be similar to the same target item showing up four or six different times on the shelf intermixed and tagged multiple times. No?
burner831234··on Lyft lays off 17% of workforce, furloughs hundreds more
The analogy to keep in mind is very simple.

If you live in a house of five and each person buys their own groceries and cooks their own dinner, it does not matter how you scrimp and save. It is still cheaper on the whole to buy raw ingredients for dinner and make it for five people. The cost goes down dramatically>

Yes there is a CDC in every state. It would be utterly ludicrous spend of cash to have an independent, not cooperative CDC in each state attempting to manage and solve the same problems.

burner831234··on CEO of Banjo admitted to being a Neo-Nazi skinhead in his youth
There are many literal children in jail, seriously injured, closed out from future gainful employment or dead for doing far less.
burner831234··on CEO of Banjo admitted to being a Neo-Nazi skinhead in his youth
This is so telling. There are so many individuals in our society who were participating in mainstream behavior and are still rotting away in jail.

Equality through jail isn't the goal, but we'd be remiss to ignore that he's admitted to a hate crime and living a pretty full life.

It is yet another example of the cracks in the rule of law

I learned it through the job. I think thats the quiet secret. Engineering is best learned through a form of apprenticeship but so is product.
burner831234··on UC Santa Cruz fires 54 grad students who were striking for higher pay
Haha. As a former grad student, let me tell you: 1. you're almost always eligible for subsidized power/water because your pay is that low (24k when I went) 2. some of these programs admit 10 ppl a year and no more. What you're getting paid isn't the first cut. Getting in is the first cut.

Working with the right professor to shape your research agenda and future as a result, is the second cut.
